Since the 1990s, it's been known that cooking with gas has not only lead to a larger amount of gas leaks which burn down homes, and nitric oxide alongside nitrous dioxide that combine to create a lung irritant.

Other notable chemicals found in high concentrations emitting from the stoves are carbon monoxcide, formaldehyde, and benzene. Even more, you're likely to find methane, hexane, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, which are all very harmful for your health.

A very recent study has shown that gas stoves have been linked to 1 in 8 cases of childhood asthma, and that benzene is freely found in the air of a shocking 99% of homes in California, enough benzene content to be a 1:1 comparison with second hand cigarette smoke, caused by not actively using the stove. While simply placing a cover over the stove when not in use and making sure you're ventilating the air is a solution to not poisoning yourself, it still releases these gases into the air outside. The reason behind nothing being done sooner has been a law that makes indoor pollution acceptable.

Since then, I've seen the worlds dumbest people stand up for the stoves that have been known to cause brain damage, the very same people that stood up for leaded gasoline and asbestos. The sarcasm in me says "I'm sure there's absolutely no connection" but the facts say there definitely is a link between NO2 exposure and a decline in cognitive performance.

These people have promised to double their use of gas stoves as a tactic to prove themselves right. Brain trust Congressman Ronny Jackson was quoted on twitter saying "I'll NEVER give up my gas stove. If the maniacs in the White House come for my stove, they can pry it from my cold dead hands. COME AND TAKE IT!!" which echoes the brain-damaged statements that "They're coming for your hamburgers!" or "They're coming for your toilets! We're all getting mandated bidets!" or "Armed forces are coming to your home to take your gas powered car"

And get this, the Consumer Product Safety Commission only did research into the effects of gas stoves, and among several other suggestions for action to be taken, a ban was suggested. The idea of banning these stoves has not made it past that suggestion. In fact, the person who made the recommendation saw no support within his own ranks for even basic regulation, much less a ban. The White House has made a formal statement that they have no intention on banning them. Congress has even announced plans to protect the use of idiot producing cooking devices. More than 20 states have already passed laws prohibiting local governments from banning gas stoves.

Actual courses of action that are being suggested by higher ups include public education campaigns and warning labels.

You can see where I stand on this. I think the amount of proof out there and recent revelations should be enough for something that's unacceptably harmful to the population to be not fit for sale. This isn't a crazy idea or something that needs too much revision. People are getting extremely sick in massive numbers. I get it, they look cool, they heat up instantly, and you can light a cigarette off one while cooking. Why not? lmao

Where do you stand on the gas stove debate?

Yes there is a lot of problems linked to gas stoves. Also there has been lots of houses blow up or burn up due to leaks in gas. I am not a fan of gas stoves. I have and prefer regular stoves that run on electricity.

I think what has made a lot of people mad is the ones calling for bans on gas stoves use them too. I think that has turned a lot of people off.

Should the product be banned I am not really sure. Here is why Cigarrettes are known to cause cancer, and other health problems. But we do not ban them. If the govt did there would be a huge uproar. I think cigarrettes are disgusting by the way.

The libertarian in me thinks people should be able to chose what they cook with. Now with that being said, maybe they need to come with a warning label like we have done with cigars and other harmful products.

To me its a slippery slope.

I don't care for gas stoves at all, but for me it's because it seems more of a hassle than anything else. I have a gas stove and I have to plug it into the wall and then it starts making a lot of noise. Then I need to ignite it and focus on the heat. Lastly, I need to go through the trouble of going to the back of the stove while the flame is on to unplug it. Once that's all done, the stove works fine but it's always a lot of work to set it up.

tornadocam : You know what, you're right. Changed my mind.

People should have the right to use them if they're fond of them. It's a choice to be made.

I think perhaps a better solution would be to treat them like cigarettes, warning signs, or maybe even formal documents to be signed upon purchase making people aware of these things directly from the manufacturer would be a good solution. I don't agree with the slippery slope fallacy, but I do see this as a separate issue from unleaded gasoline and asbestos, which had devastating effects on people, and their use was practically required as the companies producing them offered few other cheaper and cleaner solutions and their use was still rampant as it remained the cheap option. Also, asbestos wasn't necessarily a choice that consumers were largely able to make or know about when purchasing a home, and with leaded gas, like many things in the fossil fuel industry, knowledge of potential harm was known by the companies, but kept away from the public.

I feel we should have better education on the problem. I overall think people should have the ability to do, say or believe what they wish. A lack of education comes from a system of structures by government that doesn't incentive education appropriately, it's something we can control and enrich, so it's a better idea to construct conditions that would make people not want to do things that harm themselves, their families, or others out of respect for the rights you extend to others.

I see it as a personal decision, as long as you're the only one effected by the foreseeable issues with your gas stove. IE: It's your own house. Rented units or combined homes should all be upgraded to electric ovens for the safety component mostly.

I've mostly used only electric stoves my whole life, only on rare occasions have I used a gas one and they always made me feel a little uncomfortable lighting it up. While I hope to never use one again, I Know a lot of people love their gas stove and think they cook better, so if that's what they want to use and it will only effect them, I see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to use it.

I don't really know anything about the health effects that you're mentioning (this post is actually the first time I have ever heard anything about gas stoves being harmful), but counterpoint: my wallet does not like my electric stove. Electricity is expensive man.
