Something I've not invested enough time into on this site is Search Engine Optimization. Google's algorithms change pretty often and the last time I really did a lot of SEO on this site was at least 6 years ago and a lot has changed with how Google ranks a website. Doing this sort of stuff is very time consuming and you have to wait a long time to see results. It also doesn't directly benefit the users so when I have done SEO type work in the past, I'd be invested weeks doing it and users would get very upset that I wasn't working on anything, even though I was (they just didn't see what I was doing or didn't understand the benefit).
Yesterday I made a big
update to the titles of game pages in the Video Game Room and the Retro Game Room. Here's an example of a game title before the
update:
Play Contra Online NES Game Rom - Nintendo NES Emulation - Playable on Contra (NES)
And after:
Play Contra (NES) - Online Rom | Nintendo NES
That's a pretty big difference. Years ago, lots of keyword stuffing helped your ranking but now days it actually hurts your ranking. I haven't stayed up to date with all of this stuff in a very long time but will be spending some time here and there researching what works now days and what I need to change.
I also
updated the titles based on what section of a game page you're on. So for example, if you click to view the screenshots, you'd have a page that looks like this:
Play Contra (NES) - Screenshots | Nintendo NES
(still a work in progress)
Hopefully these pages can get reindexed on Google and other search engines so that these pages can potentially get ranked higher (if you've noticed more guests than usual on the site, it's more than likely bots reindexing pages).
Years ago when Nintendo had me remove all their 1st party games, that shouldn't have resulted into the traffic dropping as much as it did. The site was already starting to drop in traffic slightly and I think it had a lot to do with not keeping up with the SEO stuff and my competition doing a better job at it.
