Personally I stuck to classical instruments throughout middle school and high school. I can play almost every woodwind instrument, I had started to pick up the brass (but never went anywhere with it).

I play Guitar and Piano, and I also sing. I'm better at Piano, then singing, then Guitar. I've got an acoustic right now, but I'd like to get an electric sometime in the next few years. I was looking a few up and I really like the Epiphone Hollow-Body. It's not terribly expensive (it's cheaper than a PS3, at least), but it doesn't look like crap, either.
