Well I just started playing FFVII two days ago, and when she was killed by Sephiroth I was more surprised than sad. I knew she was going to die, but not in the first disk. Though, personally she wasn't my favorite to begin with.

It hit me pretty hard when I first played it and I was young and inexperienced, but it's not as sad as I used to think it was. I was a Genesis kid growing up and having played Phantasy Star IV, it wasn't my first experience with a main character dying. That being said, I really liked Aerith and I had put alot of work into her and made her pretty awesome, so I felt it was kind of a waste as well. Anyways, there are probably sadder moments, but that sticks out because of the popularity of the game tied with it being most people's first experience with RPGs on such a scale.

It's was very sad but I don't it the first place, the main character of Shadow of the Collosus, I know that he really don't die, but you consider that the tha couldn't see his girlfriend back to life after beating the collosus is the same as death just imagine how fell, and don't tell me that you fell sadness in that moment.

I knew it was comming and the way it happened was all so...dramatic. Not that its meant to be an uneventful scene, yet I think they went over the top to sell her death, though completely expected.
Personally I think Tidus's death in FF10 was sadder (though he didn't really die), and the bad ending of Mega Man X5 can make anyone emo.

I was also more saddened by Agro's sacrifice in Shadow of the Colossus. I was very attached to that horse when he saved Wander's ass. T_T Really, just the whole ending of that game makes me sadder than Aeris' death did. You don't even learn that much about the kid, but watching all these silly little quirks Wander had, like the way he ran kinda funny, didn't swim all that great, and actually stayed down for a couple minutes after getting smashed to the ground just made him that more endearing to me. Then you watch all of his efforts seemingly go to waste, and when you find that they were not in vain, he isn't even there to really see it.
