Anyway, we talk to pets because we feel like it and because, they just seem to "understand".

I talk to them because they are part of my family. I love my pets, and i enjoy talking to them and spending time with them.

I talk to my dog just because. I get bored so I start talking to her about anything really. I never tell her any secrets though. Just in case

I think it means that you love them and I have a Theory

My theory is that Pets are sort of like Pokemon. They can understand you, but you can't understand them

It does feel like they understand you & know what you're going through. They also don't talk back to you & make fun of you so that makes people feel like they can trust them with their secrets.

I talk to my dog & cat sometimes for the same reasons I've stated. They're my siblings.

How can you not talk to that? I think of my pets as people.

We talk to our pets like humans because they are human like...they all need to eat to survive..and they have feelings. Not all pets...like fish < They just swim around and look pretty. Anyway, cats are dogs are humans....they're just shaped differently and can't talk....

I think it's because it kinda calms the pet down.
It gets used to you, recognizes you by your voice.
I'm pretty sure pets can't tell the difference between 2 people
Just like we can't tell the difference between 2 cats or dogs of the same fur color or the same kind.

Talking to dogs is more about the tone than the words, and the "make them feel human" thing is crap, the dog doesn´t care if he´s the only dog in a group of 4 =.=

So yeah about the tones, when a dog does something good people will often speak to it with light sweet mellow tones and such, and while shaming it in harsh angry tones, the words don´t matter, for example to compliment the dog you could say.

"Aaaawww I hate you b**ch and I hope you rot you evil mutt" in sweet tones, and to shame it you could go all...

"I LOVE YOU! YOU SEXY BEAST! YOU ARE THE BEST DOG EVER!"

At least as far as I understand it.

Oh final words, this is very important. Dogs, are, not, human.

I disagree with the above post stating in ways that tone of voice makes no difference to a dog. The frequency, pitch, tone, and level of voice registers with a dog (or any other animal for that matter) the same as a human. It isn't something taught. Human babies will cry when they hear yelling, as a puppy will tuck it's tail, put it's ears back, and react passively and maybe whimper. Sure, what actual WORDS you say will not matter unless the dog learns to pick up on certain phrases associated with their actions (for example: saying "bad!" when a dog chews your shoes; giving praise when a dog sits when told, etc.) But I thoroughly believe that without talking to your dog, or letting them know any form of language spoken to it, that communication and training is rendered near impossible. And though dogs may be dogs, they are still intelligent creatures who can learn the meanings of our words and especially, tones of voices. This I feel builds a closer bond/connection/understanding between owner and pet.

It makes people feel better, they have someone to voice their opinions and annoyances to instead of suppressing all of their feelings. Has a positive psychological effect.

I think that pets, especially dogs, pick up on facial expressions very well. We can sense that ability, to a degree, and tend to talk to them for different reasons. Perhaps we need a friend, are angry, or are just acting crazy, they still can bring us together when we have need.

M!cH@3l 001 : I don't know, maybe it has to be that it's the only way we know how to talk. I mean we can't like a dog, can we(although that would be cool). I'll admit I talk to my dog like that.

I guess they do it if they're lonely or something. Or crazy either one makes sence, atleast to me.

I actually talk to my animals like as if I were talking to a human baby. LOL. I dunno why, I just do.

i think my pet understands english. my parents would tell me to get him some food, and then he'd run over to me like he knew what they said.

It's to "communicate" with the non-communicable . I do this at times with my dog -- it's not that they understand what you're saying all of the time (some words they recognize and understand), but they do 'listen' and equate the speech emotionally .

I just like talking to my dogs. They have expressions that give me the impression that they have some level of understanding. They also seem to be able to sense emotions. They become more affectionate when someone seems upset. My old dog also used to swear at my mom. He had a particular way of grumbling whenever someone bothered him.

I do it all the time =)
And when there's no pets around, I talk to myself, loudly.
It sometimes helps me get things done when I tell myself out loud to do them. Don't know what's with that.

Like, sometimes when you read a book you comment on it loudly? or even when you are online? for example on msn, talking to someone, and you get so carried away that you start responding first to yourself and then to the other person? if I made myself understood enough.

Well, pets may or may not understand the language, but they certainly react to the tone of our voices and our mood. When I feel like a wreck, my cat always comes to sleep on my lap. She never does that when I'm happy. etc. That's why I talk to them - they react, sincerely. Sometimes I wonder why I talk to some people like they were human...
