I'm on a (legitimate trust me bro) copy of good ol' Windows 11 on my main computer and work computer.... and I very actively dislike it lol. Hate train time:
WHY is the damn file explorer so slow? Open a folder with more than 20 files and yep sorry gotta take a minute to load some of these. Was never a problem on Win10 and I have a pretty meaty computer, relatively speaking to the average, so I know it's not the hardware that's the problem. I'm pretty sure I saw a report a few months ago that Microsoft acknowledges it's slow... good that you acknowledged it man, can you fix it???
WHY is the search bar useless 50% of the time? If I need to access the command line, I'll type "cmd" and half the time it acts like I wanted to do a web search for that. NO you dingus, I wanted to open the program!!!! It's SO bad with this... it does this for programs, specific applet pages (which, by the way, they've depreciated the control panel so you HAVE to use their settings applet in some instances)... it's maddening. Yeah sure I could (and am) learn to just navigate the applet so I don't have to use the search bar for these purposes, this isn't a problem without a solution, but I don't know why they had to kill a feature that USED to work. It's a problem that didn't even have to exist in the first place.
Not relevant to my personal computer, but relevant to my work computer, WHY is Copilot shoved down your throat at every opportunity? I don't want to use your crappy AI knockoff man, I've been using computers for 20 years now and I can pretty confidently navigate around myself. I don't want to "Ask Copilot" about a file, I just need to compress it... I guess it's an "old man yelling at clouds" type of deal here because this one is rather inconsequential, but on principle I don't like extra programs installed onto my computer that I'm not using. I do have control over this on my personal computer and have fully removed it, but I can't do that for my work computer so I have to deal with it there.
The OneDrive integration is so bad. If you don't nip it in the bud the SECOND you get your computer configured, before doing ANYTHING AT ALL, you will NEVER be able to effectively find files. Saved a document? Maybe it went to your local drive... maybe it went to OneDrive... who knows? Take the gamble! Reroute your default paths but OneDrive will just take those files anyway and then oops sorry your storage is almost full. I don't want you storing anything anyways!!!! Go away!!!!!
I configured a media server recently on an older laptop of mine, using Wubuntu, and I guess my years of experience in IT/computer science are paying off (and also it's been developed further to be friendlier I'm sure) since I didn't really find it nearly as hard to use as the last time I tried out a Linux distro. If Windows 12(?) is some bulls*** I really might be switching. Hell, I might just switch anyway with all the Copilot and AI nonsense that I've disabled on my personal computer for now, but they eventually may make it so that I can't disable it!
Sheesh.
