The Original Mario Bros. review   IgorBird122

Here is a review by The IB, This one is on the classic game called “Mario Bros”. Mario Bros was first released on the arcade sometime in 1983, but was later released on the NES sometime in June 1986 (but released in Japan on September 9th, 1983). This game was the first time where we see Mario’s brother named Luigi debut. This game has been very popular to all generation of gamers, both young and old and I think with this game, this game has introduced a lot of elements that we would see in future Mario games like Super Mario Bros. With this game, it is a very basic game where you control Mario and defeat enemies by knocking enemies from below or hitting the new POW block (which got famous in the whole Mario series) and knocking them out the level and once you clear all of them out, you advance to the next stage and you repeat that progress till you complete the game. So, it’s really an interesting game, I think it has become one of the most famous Mario game out there. I will explain all in this review.

Let’s get on with the review

Graphics..

I think for a 1983 arcade game, the graphics to my point of view is quite amazing. I think with the style that was made in this game, it has a basic feeling. Just with the basic amount of bits in this game and the basic sprites in this game to my personally standpoint for 1983 game I think it’s quite an amazing job. As for the sprites in this game, they came out really interesting, the Mario sprite, the enemy sprites and even the POW sprite all look quite interesting, that’s all I got to say with this and this being one of the first games released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I think this game right here was quite an interesting, well, when it comes to the graphics.

For the graphics, I got to give it a perfect 10 out of 10, for a game that was released in 1983 and remade for the NES for 1985.

------------

Sound/Music..

For 1983/85, I have to say, it does have all the classic Mario sounds we all are familiar with, and with this game, it’s no different from later games and I think this game with the sounds I think is a huge benchmark for future Mario games such as Super Mario Bros. (Although in North America, Mario Bros was released after Super Mario Bros.). But other than that, the sound effects, I like them a whole lot in this game

As for the music, although they wasn’t really a whole lot of music in this game with the exception of the menu and the beginning of each level, but other than those times, it’s all quiet, but this is quite understandable for a 1983 game. I know in the remakes for the Game Boy Advance does add music during the levels, but that’s a completely different game though, but we are talking about Mario Bros. for the NES that was released in 1985. So, for those brief moments those sounds play, I think they sound quite amusing, I wish it could last a little bit longer in the game, but I think personally some people don’t really want to hear music during this classic game, the sound effects are good enough. That’s mostly all I have to talk about.

With that said, I’m going to give this game an 8 out of 10. The sounds are amazing for its time and the music is also amazing for its time, I think if they added a tiny bit more, it would be higher, but I personally don’t think it’s too much of a big deal though. All and all, the sound effects and the music is all nice.

------------

Addiction Level..

The Addiction Level is extremely high, the reason why I give it this number, think about it, back in 1983 when this was on the arcade, this was one of the most well-known games out there, although we had the Great Crash of 1983 happen during that time and video gaming wasn’t really at its best, but during this time, this was one of those well-known games that was out there during that time. When Nintendo released Mario Bros. for the NES, this really got a whole lot of people buying this game because on how much they likes this game, although in North America, People were more into Super Mario Bros. but this game here was like 2nd in like though. To my opinion, it is still quite an amazing and addicting game and I have played this game a whole lot of times and I think this game here will provide hours of entertainment to you and your family. I think you should give this a shot.

With that said, I’m going to give this game a perfect 10 out of 10. It is one amazing game and I think you will be glued to this one game. You will see on how addictive this one game is when it was released on the arcade. That’s what I do have to say with the addiction level with this one game, it’s just really addicting.

------------

The Storyline..

The Storyline of this game, this is where we first know that Mario and Luigi were plumbers before we realized that they end up in the Mushroom Kingdom. What they have to do is go into the sewers and clear out all the junk out of the pipes and once you clear everything, you move onto the next level which will be a whole lot harder. You can have anything in those pipes, maybe that’s why Mario and pipes been in the series for quite a while (that might just be me though). But yeah, they really aren’t much of a story with the exception of this story.

With the story, I will give it like a 7 out of 10, the story seem a little bland, but being an arcade game released in 1983, it’s quite understandable, not a whole lot of storied are told in the early 80’s games

------------

Depth..

For the Depth of the game, this game has a whole lot of levels, in fact, so many; I don’t think there is a high level. With what seems to be an infinite amount of levels, plus the enemies, and of course, the POW block, I think this game has a whole lot of interesting things featured in this game. I think just like I mentioned in the Addiction Level, it has a whole lot of things that will cause a whole lot of people to be hooked onto this game which I think to my point of view is what makes quite an amazing game. So, a game with a whole lot of material and the game made in 1983, you got to say that this is on great game.

With that all said, I will give the Depth of this game a perfect 10 out of 10, It’s got a whole lot of interesting things added onto the game and I think with all these items added in. It set a benchmark for future Mario games, like the POW block plays a major role in future Mario games and this is where they got their start from, and a couple of enemies also the Shellcreepers which are later changed to Koopa Troopas in Super Mario Bros, and the fireball in this game remained it shape throughout the NES and even into the Super Nintendo era, so a lot of stuff in this game. That’s why it’s got a 10.

------------

Difficulty / Gameplay..

For the Difficulty of this game, it’s not really that hard especially when you start the game because the 1st level is only a few Shellcreepers, but then the later on you go, the tougher the enemies and the more enemies shows up and it can put a challenge to you, but if you know on what you are doing, I don’t think you’ll have too much of an issue though.

As for the Gameplay, I think the gameplay is pretty fluent, because I think with the controls; they work quite smoothly and are really responsible to your actions. I think with all the things you can do like knocking the enemies from underneath and hitting the POW block and go and kick them out of the level, I think is what makes this game really good. So, nothing really much to add onto here other than the controls are quite nice.

With that all said, I’m going to give this game an 8 out of 10. The game is not hard at all, mostly if you’re used to playing Mario Bros and I don’t think you’ll have any issues about you losing early one because like I said, the 1st level is extremely easy (just knock those Shellcreepers out and your good). And the gameplay is also great as well; I don’t think I had any issues with the controls with playing this. So that’s why I mostly give this game an 8

------------

Overall..

Overall, I got to say that Mario Bros. was a pretty fantastic game for its time and brought a new element into the gaming world, although this game was released for the arcade during the Great Crash of ’83, but it’s Nintendo that really revived the game with their NES system and that is great that Nintendo had brought some life into this game and brought it back as remakes when they made the 4 advanced Super Mario games for the Game Boy Advance so you can play Mario Bros on to-go, so I think Nintendo has done a whole lot for thing game and that is what I like about it.

I think with the Graphics and Sound Effects, I think hey quite stand out really nice for a 1983/85 game, I think they were a benchmark for future games to be used like Super Mario Bros and all that. For the Music, although it’s short, but it’s amazing all at the same time, I think on a personal note, it could have been longer, but meh, it’s alright. As for the Storyline, I know they really isn’t much of one other that Mario and Luigi being plumbers, cleaning out stuff in the sewers, but that’s mostly it though. For the Difficulty and the Gameplay, it’s all not that bad, in fact, I think to my point of view, if you’re used to this game, it is quite easy and the controls are quite easy to figure out and once you get through the gameplay on this game, I think you’ll like it and for the Addiction Level and the Depth. I think this is what make this game be successful, this game is highly popular for its time despite the Great Crash of ’83, this game was popular and Nintendo seen on how popular it was and went ahead and released it on their own console known as the NES. So I think this is one amazing game.

For the final score, I will give this game a 9 out of 10, I think with all the stuff that was featured in this game, I think this game has connected young and old people in playing this game because this game itself has brought a whole lot of popularity and this is what really brought Mario and Luigi onto the gaming map (Despite that Mario was in Donkey Kong under the name “Jumpman”). I think this is a fantastic game, I think on a personal note, if you haven’t tried this game (which I have no clue on why you haven’t yet), I would like to mention this game for you to try, it’s a fun and entertaining game which will be quite entertaining for hours and you won’t get enough with it.

That’s it with this review, try this game out.

Mario Bros. Review   Zircron Swift
Mario Bros. was once an arcade game released in 1983, two years after the release of Donkey Kong. Mario came a long way in those two years, as he was once a carpenter with a pet ape in Donkey Kong, then an evil villian in Donkey Kong Junior, and now he's a Plumber. I must say, not everyone can say that on their CV. This was the first game that told us Mario's surname, which some of you might already know as "Mario" (making his full name "Mario Mario", I'm sure you know), but this game was also the first to indroduce Luigi, the Green Wonder as I like to call him. Let's take a look at the NES port of this arcade game classic.
The story appears to be that you are clearing up the sewers of turles and crabs.....Why are there turtles and crabs in the sewers in the first place? Are they the kind that live down there? Or did they get lost and just ended up there? There are also coins you can collect.....because people normally throw money down the sink. Maybe it's how they pay Mario for his job. Kinda rude if they do it like that....but I digress. To clear a stage, you have to defeat every enemy in that phase. But you can't just jump on the enemies like in Super Mario Bros., you have to hit the platform underneath them and then just kick 'em out of the way. This earns you 800 points, but if you are able to kick more than one in quick sucession, you'll earn bonus points.
But if you don't kick them for too long, they'll get back up and are a little angry with you, with a change of colour and an increase of speed. The last enemy is always angry for kicking your friends, and will go to top speed. The crabs take two hits underneath to become flipped, but what exactly happens to them on the first hit? Are they wearing.....underwear? Why?......scratch that.....how? The bugs can only be flipped over when they are on the ground, and as they hop, you need a little sense of timing to get them.
There is a POW block that will flip all enemies on the screen if you hit it. You can only use it a number of times, so use it wisely. Every once in a while, the game will "test your skill" with a mini-game. All you have to do is collect all the coins on the screen. Easier said then done the first time round. Collect all the coins, and you'll get a 1-up and a lump sum of points. These get harder as you go along. The level layouts get hardas as well. There are ice paltforms waiting for you in future levels.
There are four different game types, two for each number of players. Game A is your standard game, while Game B gets harder faster than Game A. If your looking for a challenge, game B is the way to go. You can play with someone else in 2-player mode. You can work as a team to get as far as you can in the game, or you can squabble when ever you can to get that coin to trick people into dying when they think they're going to knock out an enemy. Mostly, I try and do the second thing and get the most points over my opponent. The results are normally very amusing on both ends. Wait a minute.....Mario has blue hair.....while Luigi has green hair....Why does this remind me of something?.....  =O   Urban Champion forshadowing! If you're not careful, you'll get hit by some fire balls that appear from time to time. The red one is rather straight and forward, while the green one looks a little....drunk shall we say, as it moves.
The graphics are somewhat simpler than the arcade version. The koopas, erm....turtles look rather like the Super Mario Bros. ones. Maybe they resued the ones in here for that game and ramped them up. The background is black, which annoys me, but does suit the sewer surroundings rather well. The animation for the enemies moving and you walking is decent. It was an arcade game after all. The music is pretty catchy. While there is no main theme through-out the level, the little tunes before and after the game are classic.
What I don't quite get is the sound when you walk. You make this "beat" as you take every step. Continuesly walking would result in a kinda level theme, if you want to call it that. The controls are a little slippery. You have to move as you jump to jump forward, which takes a bit of time to get used to. The game in itself is very addtictive. It's almost like Pac-Man.The game gets fairly difficult along the way. I can get to phase 15 with-out trying. But then the increased speed of the enemies being launched on me throws me off at some points and kills me.
Overall, I give this game a 9.4/10      It's simple game play makes it what it is. It's a classical game that is best played with a friend, even if you don't plan on working together. The lack of music in-game gives it a some-what Atari-like charm. I wonder what this game would be like on an Atari 2600.....Well, not much different, I suppose, save for even simpler graphics. It was like a bench mark for the Mario series, many things in this game were used in future games. The fire balls became the Fire Flower, the POW block became, erm, the POW block, and the different colours of the Koopas (sorry, turtles...), became their own speices. I don't know where the para-koopas came from, but enemies with wings are a win for me. Mario seemed to keep the Plumber career after his game for future games to come. It's hard to believe he used to be a simple carpente over 25 years ago....

Well done home port   SuperCrash64
Mario bros  the classic and a overall great game. Now You might be like what didn't you review this game before? Correction. I Reviewed Super Mario bros. Not this 1 which is based on the 1983 original Mario brothers arcade game. Just need to thought of the right parts to review before I did this .
Background-Story: Anyways this is the 1st Mario game involving his scary pants little brother Luigi. Developed by Nintendo in 1983 for the early arcade machines. This game didn't exactly start off the storyline or Main part of the series that made it take off with all the repeative Bowser story lines no not really this didn't do that at all.
Game play/instructions. Mario bros the 1983 arcade game originally mainly focused on you using the controls and jump underneath the platform where the foe is standing, As for the home port of the Nintendo entertainment system does just that .
Graphics: Another game where colors and details Pay off here.
Graphically The Nintendo entertainment system looks pretty good compared to the actual arcade cabinet/machine,As the color scheme is pretty darn close . Sprites The Nintendo entertainment system does a well job containing the sprites because they look pretty good and faithful to their arcade counterparts as they are close in color scheme and details. Stages Again like the sprites very close to their arcade counterparts and look fairly well made and finished what is the stage you may ask? Simple its a sewer stage. Animation not bad The animation is pretty fluid with mainly walking parts. It looks a bit smooth and a bit choppy on some parts if I say so myself but its still well done. Graphics rating 9
 Sound:meets your usual mario standards
What do I mean by meets by usual Mario standards you ask? Simple Mario game have a variety of Jumping coins or 1 ups in some parts.
This game has your standard jumping Has some different sound effects Like Kicking your foes off and a splash sound effect. But again it seems to meet the usual standards of Mario sound variety Soundtrack Just Really the same song over and over again. Now don't get me wrong I usually like Mario tunes. And that's not to say I don't like this 1. I do but sometimes I would just mute the game because of the same old tune playing over and over again. Sound rating 8.
Addictiveness/replayablity This game is best enjoyed with 2 players.  How often I would play it probably about once a week. Addictiveness rating 7
Story. The storyline of the game. Mario and Luigi are plumbers  The actual job of Plumbers mean you have to get all junk and stuff out of Pipes Toilets And other Stuff related to water filled material. So the storyline is for Mario and Luigi to Clean out this pipe place that leads to  some house I'm not exactly sure where the pipes lead to so your guess is good as mine. Anyways that's why you have to get rid of all crabs koopa troopas and other foes that arrive in later levels. Story rating 6.
Depth/Replayabilty. This game can be pretty long and it mainly depends on how big of a score you want to get it also depends on your skills. In other words. This game was meant to be played as long as you keep going to get the highest score possible or the Highest score you can earn for that matter. Depth/Replayablity rating=10.
Difficulty: Not sure if it matters here.
Anyways. The game is not really hard  because there are only a few enemies on screen. I just need some practice but I don't really find the game like Immedating/difficult.its really enjoyable and not that hard. Difficulty rating 6.
Overall this was a good game and worth a try. 9.6 Good graphics. Not bad sound variety or soundtrack. Good gameplay and controls

Classic   sdslayer100
Mario Bros. is a classic. Although it is very addicting, it is very hard. There is things to say about the game, I just don't know them all. So, I apologize if this review is not as good as my others. I will attempt to make my categories more detailed. Now then, let's start into the categories.
---------------Graphics----------------
The graphics are not very good. I do not blame the game for that. The reason is because it was an early Mario game. The game's graphics are not all bad.
--------------Sound------------------
The sounds are nice. There is one sound for the screen that reads 'Phase 1' that I like. The sound I believe was in Donkey Kong.  I just believe they could be better.
---------Addictiveness------------
Well, where can I begin here? The addictiveness in this game shocks me. Every time I die and get a game over, I feel like I can not stop so I play again and again and again... Anyway, my point is that this game is really addicting...
----------Story---------------
This is where I need help with thinking. Does this game even really have a story? Please let me know.
-----------Depth--------------
Oh, this game has a lot of depth. I don't even know if you can beat it! I don't know if it goes on forever or what? I can never beat this game. I get up to like Phase 18 and die somewhere between Phases 18 and 21. (I don't know how high. I am just making a guess.) I just can't get the right words out to describe the depth of this game. I would if I could.
----------Difficulty-------------
The difficulty is like all video games difficulties. Level 1 is easy and Level 20 is hard. Only this game's difficulty increases way faster. What I mean by that is, Level 1 is really easy. Level 10 is impossible. The game has difficulty all right but it is not the most difficult game I ever played.
-----------Overall--------------
Overall, this game is awesome. It is about the second to third hardest game I have ever played. There is not much more to say about this game. It is just plain classic.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope that this review was still good, but I would like some suggestions on what I could add or change to make my reviews better. Please leave any suggestions in a reply, and I would like to give a special thanks to Dean2k13 for giving me some suggestions. I hope for more encouraging thoughts to help me keep writing reviews. I would also like that in a reply telling me if you like or dislike my reviews. I hope that I am making my reviews detailed enough. I would like to know if I am or am not. Thank you for listening. I would also like if you could be more descriptive about your suggestions. Sometimes I misunderstand the ideas. Then I don't do it right. Thank you for reading my review and have a nice day.

bokica: You need the plugin or java to play the games. See the requirements just below the "Play Game" link. To download the plugin go to announcements and Ctrl F for "RGR plugin v1.63". This should bring you directly to the link.
