Here is a review by The IB, This one is on the classic game called “Mario Bros”. Mario Bros was first released on the arcade sometime in 1983, but was later released on the NES sometime in June 1986 (but released in Japan on September 9th, 1983). This game was the first time where we see Mario’s brother named Luigi debut. This game has been very popular to all generation of gamers, both young and old and I think with this game, this game has introduced a lot of elements that we would see in future Mario games like Super Mario Bros. With this game, it is a very basic game where you control Mario and defeat enemies by knocking enemies from below or hitting the new POW block (which got famous in the whole Mario series) and knocking them out the level and once you clear all of them out, you advance to the next stage and you repeat that progress till you complete the game. So, it’s really an interesting game, I think it has become one of the most famous Mario game out there. I will explain all in this review.

Let’s get on with the review

Graphics..

I think for a 1983 arcade game, the graphics to my point of view is quite amazing. I think with the style that was made in this game, it has a basic feeling. Just with the basic amount of bits in this game and the basic sprites in this game to my personally standpoint for 1983 game I think it’s quite an amazing job. As for the sprites in this game, they came out really interesting, the Mario sprite, the enemy sprites and even the POW sprite all look quite interesting, that’s all I got to say with this and this being one of the first games released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I think this game right here was quite an interesting, well, when it comes to the graphics.

For the graphics, I got to give it a perfect 10 out of 10, for a game that was released in 1983 and remade for the NES for 1985.

------------

Sound/Music..

For 1983/85, I have to say, it does have all the classic Mario sounds we all are familiar with, and with this game, it’s no different from later games and I think this game with the sounds I think is a huge benchmark for future Mario games such as Super Mario Bros. (Although in North America, Mario Bros was released after Super Mario Bros.). But other than that, the sound effects, I like them a whole lot in this game

As for the music, although they wasn’t really a whole lot of music in this game with the exception of the menu and the beginning of each level, but other than those times, it’s all quiet, but this is quite understandable for a 1983 game. I know in the remakes for the Game Boy Advance does add music during the levels, but that’s a completely different game though, but we are talking about Mario Bros. for the NES that was released in 1985. So, for those brief moments those sounds play, I think they sound quite amusing, I wish it could last a little bit longer in the game, but I think personally some people don’t really want to hear music during this classic game, the sound effects are good enough. That’s mostly all I have to talk about.

With that said, I’m going to give this game an 8 out of 10. The sounds are amazing for its time and the music is also amazing for its time, I think if they added a tiny bit more, it would be higher, but I personally don’t think it’s too much of a big deal though. All and all, the sound effects and the music is all nice.

------------

Addiction Level..

The Addiction Level is extremely high, the reason why I give it this number, think about it, back in 1983 when this was on the arcade, this was one of the most well-known games out there, although we had the Great Crash of 1983 happen during that time and video gaming wasn’t really at its best, but during this time, this was one of those well-known games that was out there during that time. When Nintendo released Mario Bros. for the NES, this really got a whole lot of people buying this game because on how much they likes this game, although in North America, People were more into Super Mario Bros. but this game here was like 2nd in like though. To my opinion, it is still quite an amazing and addicting game and I have played this game a whole lot of times and I think this game here will provide hours of entertainment to you and your family. I think you should give this a shot.

With that said, I’m going to give this game a perfect 10 out of 10. It is one amazing game and I think you will be glued to this one game. You will see on how addictive this one game is when it was released on the arcade. That’s what I do have to say with the addiction level with this one game, it’s just really addicting.

------------

The Storyline..

The Storyline of this game, this is where we first know that Mario and Luigi were plumbers before we realized that they end up in the Mushroom Kingdom. What they have to do is go into the sewers and clear out all the junk out of the pipes and once you clear everything, you move onto the next level which will be a whole lot harder. You can have anything in those pipes, maybe that’s why Mario and pipes been in the series for quite a while (that might just be me though). But yeah, they really aren’t much of a story with the exception of this story.

With the story, I will give it like a 7 out of 10, the story seem a little bland, but being an arcade game released in 1983, it’s quite understandable, not a whole lot of storied are told in the early 80’s games

------------

Depth..

For the Depth of the game, this game has a whole lot of levels, in fact, so many; I don’t think there is a high level. With what seems to be an infinite amount of levels, plus the enemies, and of course, the POW block, I think this game has a whole lot of interesting things featured in this game. I think just like I mentioned in the Addiction Level, it has a whole lot of things that will cause a whole lot of people to be hooked onto this game which I think to my point of view is what makes quite an amazing game. So, a game with a whole lot of material and the game made in 1983, you got to say that this is on great game.

With that all said, I will give the Depth of this game a perfect 10 out of 10, It’s got a whole lot of interesting things added onto the game and I think with all these items added in. It set a benchmark for future Mario games, like the POW block plays a major role in future Mario games and this is where they got their start from, and a couple of enemies also the Shellcreepers which are later changed to Koopa Troopas in Super Mario Bros, and the fireball in this game remained it shape throughout the NES and even into the Super Nintendo era, so a lot of stuff in this game. That’s why it’s got a 10.

------------

Difficulty / Gameplay..

For the Difficulty of this game, it’s not really that hard especially when you start the game because the 1st level is only a few Shellcreepers, but then the later on you go, the tougher the enemies and the more enemies shows up and it can put a challenge to you, but if you know on what you are doing, I don’t think you’ll have too much of an issue though.

As for the Gameplay, I think the gameplay is pretty fluent, because I think with the controls; they work quite smoothly and are really responsible to your actions. I think with all the things you can do like knocking the enemies from underneath and hitting the POW block and go and kick them out of the level, I think is what makes this game really good. So, nothing really much to add onto here other than the controls are quite nice.

With that all said, I’m going to give this game an 8 out of 10. The game is not hard at all, mostly if you’re used to playing Mario Bros and I don’t think you’ll have any issues about you losing early one because like I said, the 1st level is extremely easy (just knock those Shellcreepers out and your good). And the gameplay is also great as well; I don’t think I had any issues with the controls with playing this. So that’s why I mostly give this game an 8

------------

Overall..

Overall, I got to say that Mario Bros. was a pretty fantastic game for its time and brought a new element into the gaming world, although this game was released for the arcade during the Great Crash of ’83, but it’s Nintendo that really revived the game with their NES system and that is great that Nintendo had brought some life into this game and brought it back as remakes when they made the 4 advanced Super Mario games for the Game Boy Advance so you can play Mario Bros on to-go, so I think Nintendo has done a whole lot for thing game and that is what I like about it.

I think with the Graphics and Sound Effects, I think hey quite stand out really nice for a 1983/85 game, I think they were a benchmark for future games to be used like Super Mario Bros and all that. For the Music, although it’s short, but it’s amazing all at the same time, I think on a personal note, it could have been longer, but meh, it’s alright. As for the Storyline, I know they really isn’t much of one other that Mario and Luigi being plumbers, cleaning out stuff in the sewers, but that’s mostly it though. For the Difficulty and the Gameplay, it’s all not that bad, in fact, I think to my point of view, if you’re used to this game, it is quite easy and the controls are quite easy to figure out and once you get through the gameplay on this game, I think you’ll like it and for the Addiction Level and the Depth. I think this is what make this game be successful, this game is highly popular for its time despite the Great Crash of ’83, this game was popular and Nintendo seen on how popular it was and went ahead and released it on their own console known as the NES. So I think this is one amazing game.

For the final score, I will give this game a 9 out of 10, I think with all the stuff that was featured in this game, I think this game has connected young and old people in playing this game because this game itself has brought a whole lot of popularity and this is what really brought Mario and Luigi onto the gaming map (Despite that Mario was in Donkey Kong under the name “Jumpman”). I think this is a fantastic game, I think on a personal note, if you haven’t tried this game (which I have no clue on why you haven’t yet), I would like to mention this game for you to try, it’s a fun and entertaining game which will be quite entertaining for hours and you won’t get enough with it.

That’s it with this review, try this game out.

Another great review by you, IG! I have to agree with you on the addictiveness. I keep coming back to this on my Super Mario Advance, always trying to beat my highest scores. Because it's so addicting, everyone's voting for it to be in the NES Netplay Tournament! Can't wait to see the next review.

LunarDarkness2 : Yeah, I'm starting to burn out with reviews, but I am doing a few classic NES games and then after that, I'm going to go for PS3 reviews.
But that's for liking my reviews, I tend to keep my reviews at least 2,000 words, so it's all in good detail.
