Many people jailbreak (ie: crack, unlock) their iphones/iPod touch. Doing this enables them to customize what is not usually customizible, get free apps and media, get apps not allowed on Apple's store, and more.

I hear some cons though, like having to re-jailbreak the phone every OS update. I've also read that jailbreaking erases much data already stored on your phone, and that you cannot use the backup to synch it back to your phone. How much os this is true, I don't know.

I have an iphone myself, I am wondering: is it worth it?

So what do you guys think on the matter of jailbreaking, what pros and cons should one be aware of before doing so?

I think more often than not cracking anything is a bad idea. Almost guaranteed the warranty is voided by that which in my mind makes it not worth doing.

And while you may get access to some things you couldn't do before... in the long run I think the standard things you're getting from the phone are good enough. Sure, free apps are great, and having stuff no one else has is also cool.... but I'd rather have a phone that is considered "legit" by the company and not have to deal with all the related problems from cracking the phone.

The warranty is a good point.

Also, apps that are not checked by Apple could be malicious.

very true... I didn't even think about that.

And even the apps that are "checked" aren't always verified comepletely.... a friend of mine has looked into iphone sercurity and it's not great. Apps are allowed to do whatever they want and you don't actually know what they access or what they are doing when you download them. It's very possible that many apps are fishing for personal information when you use them.

I guess I'll keep my phone as is. As tempting as some of the "illigal" apps and cusomizations are.

I don't know much about jailbreaking anything, but due to the voided warranty if you do I'd say don't everyone is making a good argument about that part!!!

i had a jailbroken ipod touch, it is so worth it, quake, emulators, youtube downloader, all that stuff is awesome. my understanding is that when you send your ipod in for anything you just do a restore first. but be careful when jailbreaking as you can brick your ipod but there are fixes i believe.

badjuju99 : I've had a jailbroken ipod touch for over a year now and it has never deleted information previously stored before the jailbreak.

Also. It's good to have a jailbroken iphone/ipod touch if you're into customization but it does drain bettery life pretty fast if you are playing 3d games.

It's worth it if you have one of the bigger iPods/iPhones (like 32GB). If you have the 8GB iPhone or iPod Touch, the ROMs will more than likely lag like crazy and be unplayable.

Also, if you install an app from CYDIA that ends up being malicious, you will have nobody to turn to since your warranty will be completely void.

I think you should go for it, though. It's worth it if you know what you're doing.
