VMWare player will work pretty well. Much better than VirtualBox does. It won't cause harm to your computer in any way.
However, keep in mind that if you want to run Windows XP or Windows 2000, the sound will be garbled in Windows 10 host. This can be worked around using VMAudioFixTray. Oddly, the problem doesn't occur in Windows 7 or below, and doesn't occur in Linux-based operating systems.

Is VMware's software for running virtual Os's free? I know there is Workstation, and VMPlayer. I wasn't sure the difference in capabilities, and features for use. (For simple learning, and messing around with older operating systems)

VMWare Player is free to use in non-commercial environments. Workstation is paid software. Player has the same functionality but is stripped down so you don't get things like snapshots.
