So, I was at GameStop a few days ago, talking to one of the guys that I'll probably be working with (if I get hired for the seasonal position here soon. Everybody likes me, and I got the managers PS ID to play Overwatch with). And he told me about a patent filed by Nintendo. He said it was the N64 controller. We talked about the potential of a N64 classic, and what it could mean.

I know it might be a little hard to believe, so here's an article I found doing a quick Bing search to help me explain this: https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/nintendo-trademark-application-filing-hints-at-n64-classic-console

Eirinn : I know you like these kinds of things, as you're usually the Gaming Industry News guy. What do you think about this?

I think, first of all, that the writer of the linked article needs to actually look at the real statistics of the market themselves instead of running with what they're told. I thought that was a given with being a professional, but seems not.

That gripe out of the way, on to what you said.

I think it's cool enough. I mean essentially they're competing with their own selves (microconsoles vs. eShop), but if they're going to do this microconsole stuff, then the N64 is a welcome addition. I do have to wonder if it'll outsell the N64, given that console's underwhelming reception back in the day. Nostalgia is funny like that though, so I expect it to do so.

Long story short -- This makes sense, and will probably sell quite well. I'm not a microconsole fan myself, but these kind are a better deal than buying a new release every generation anyway. I do question if it'll ruin the point to their subscription service though.

Nice catch btw.

Eirinn : I didn't exactly "catch" it. I found out about it from a guy at GameStop, and I just Google'd for an article about it, and picked the first one that looked good for this article.

I don't see anything too surprising about Nintendo making an N64 mini, though I doubt it will do as well as the SNES mini. The blocky 3d graphics of most n64 games have not aged as well as the 16 bit art style, not to mention most major N64 games (like Zelda and Mario) have seen remakes on systems like the DS which would be a better way to play those games. Since this was the first venture into 3d movement the control scheme of many games would be very cumbersome by today's standards.  Lastly, while it's debatable, I don't think the N64 has the same variety in its game library as the SNES and just has a smaller library in general. Besides Zelda and Mario Kart 64 most major titles I can think of that might be worth including are platformers which probably wouldn't be too enticing.

I got the NES classic. I'm happy. But being as they delayed the SNES classic, this gives me doubts. Ah well. Time will tell.

A possible Nintendo 64 Classic? If F-Zero X comes with the Expansion Kit, then I'll certainly buy one of these.

TouchMaster97 : I haven't actually heard anything about this since the patents were announced. I'm actually kind of upset about it. I was really looking forward to Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Donkey Kong 64, and other classics. If Star Wars: Episode 1 Pod Racing wasn't in there, I was going to be very disappointed.

I swear, if this thing ever gets made. They'd better include Paper Mario, or I'll never forgive them.
