Mega Man 2 is the game that started Mega Man iconic run. It is also the game that established the franchise and made the Mega Man series one of the most popular video games of all time. The Original Mega Man 2 came out around 1988/1989. It should be no surprise that several hacks have been created using this game. This hack is different though as you play as Mega Man's sister Roll. I will be comparing this version to the original.

Story: 9

To Stop Dr. Wily Dr. Light modified two Robots Mega Man and Roll to counter Dr. Wily. Light sent out Roll to defeat Wily while Rock was on standby if needed. Roll defeated Dr. Wily. Wily, in revenge created 8 of his own robot masters and sent them to defeat Roll and take over the world. Roll heads out once again to stop Dr. Wily.

This is basically your revenge plot. Dr. Wily is out looking for revenge. That is pretty much the same plot as the original game. The only difference is instead of Mega Man it has been changed to fit Roll. I actually liked how they changed the character but kept the plot. Mega Man 2's plot was very simple and really did not need to be changed. I give it a solid 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

The graphics are amazingly good. The graphics were not changed from the original game. The stage color backgrounds are very good and go with the stages' themes nicely. What has changed is the sprite color. I really like how Roll's sprites change color depending on the weapon you are using. That is a nice touch and it was nice they were different than Mega Man's. I also like the stages layouts they were left unchanged from the original game. The only thing though is they are a few spots in the game that seem to lag. It is minor but it is there. The original Mega Man 2 did not have lags or at least I don't remember any occurring in the original Mega Man 2.

The controls are very good and smooth. Not one time does the controls seem to lag, or change speed. Best that I remember Mega Man 2's controls set the bar for future Mega Man games. It was nice that the controls did not suffer as they do in some hacks. Therefore I give the graphics and controls a solid 8 out of 10 rating. The lags brings the rating down a little

Sound: 9

The sound in this game is amazing and was left unchanged from the original game. Mega Man 2 set the bar for the quality of sound Mega Man games would have. Roll-Chan 2 is no different. I like the sound that the weapons make to let you know they are doing damage. Enemies weapons also make sounds to let you know they mean business. The quality of sound though comes from the stage themes. Personally my favorite from this game is Wood Man's Stage it has a nice beat to it. In fact, a lot of of the stage musics have nice tunes to them. The only thing that keeps this from getting a 10 is I think a few other Mega Man games had better tunes. But this is very nicely done and so it was good nothing was changed. I give it a solid 9 out of 10.

Replay Value: 8

The Replay value in this game is very good. I had fun playing this game it is exactly the same as the original Mega Man 2. This game has a lot going for it and that is what makes it enjoyable to play. This game makes you want to play it again and again. So you may be asking why does this not get a 9 or a 10 ? Well, I will explain. Mega Man 2 set the bar for replay values. Roll Chan being a hack keeps that feel. Future Mega Man Games had better replay value and were ones you could not put down. Based on how this is a hack of the original game that is why I give it an 8 instead of a 9 or 10. Still this is a very good game and one you will want to play again.

Depth: 8

Mega Man 2 set the bar for future Mega Man games in the high amount of depth they had. Roll Chan 2 is no exception. They are a lot of different paths to take in stages and a lot of them lead to secret items and power ups. Also the stages take a while to beat a few of them are long. Roll Chan 2 is a game that you are not going to beat in a short amount of time. It should be noted though that stages cannot be re-visited. So if you miss an item you will have to die to go back or lean were the paths are and start over again. Still there is a lot of depth to this game so I give it an 8 out of 10.

Difficulty: 7

Just like the original game Roll Chan 2 gives you the choice to chose between Normal Difficulty and Hard mode. If you choose Hard Mode than the difficulty is probably going to be a 9 out of 10. Enemies take more shots to kill, Robot Masters are more durable, enemies increase in numbers, enemy shots do more damage and even enemies move quicker. But the default setting is normal difficulty so that is the one I will be critiquing.

Again using Normal Difficulty the game has its difficult spots in it but it is doable and not too bad. They are 2 stages in this game that can cause one to get frustrated. Quick Man's stage is one of them due to the laser beams of death getting through them is tricky. Heat Man's stage is another due to the lava and death pits. The other stages are not bad at all. Enemy placement, and pits are the things that add difficulty to this game. Enemies even in normal mode just love to gang up on you. Also when you get hit by an enemy it knocks you back. If your on a short platform or near a pit you might end up falling into the pit. Pits are plentiful in this game. So yeah you will probably die some in this game. Robot Masters a few of them can be tough to beat.

Even though you will probably die some in this game. Its not like future Mega Man games that really increased the difficulty. Also the game tries to help you out in terms of difficulty. If you use Robot Master weapons against bosses then the fights are made so much easier. With the exception of a few bosses. Most Bosses die within 6 hits of their weakness. In addition a few of the Robot Masters can be taken out with 2 hits of their weakness. The game seems to leave extra lives around so if you need one you can probably find one.

So While Roll Chan 2 has its difficult moments its not overbearing. Its not an easy game either but not very difficulty. Due to the pits and enemy placement as well as not able to revisit the stages. I give Roll Chan 2 a 7 out of 10 (Normal Mode). I liked this game's difficult it challenges you and requires very good timing skills. But its not going to bury you like future games do. So yeah 7 out of 10 sounds about right.

Overall Rating: 8.9

Roll Chan 2 plays a lot like the original Mega Man 2. Roll Chan 2 is a good game to play and I certainly had fun playing it. Even though this is a hack it is one that is almost completely identical to the original game. The only difference is the character and sprites color. This game has a lot going on for it. It is easy to see why the maker or makers of this game chose not to change a whole lot. I mean Mega Man 2 had a lot going for it. This game did have a few negatives in it though but these are very minor. First I will start with the positives.

The game is nicely made I can tell the maker or makers of this game spent a lot of time in developing it. Even if it is a copy it does take time to change the sprites and characters of the game. I also like how they changed the story to fit Roll's Character instead of creating an entirely new plot like I have seen in other hacks. I also like how the stages were left unchanged. Changing the color of sprites was a nice touch. I also liked how the sound was left unchanged. Another good point is just like the original game Roll Chan 2 offers the option of the level of difficulty. You can play on normal difficulty or if you really like difficult games play on hard mode. I want to think that Mega Man 2 was the only game in the classic series to offer that option. So it was good to see that the makers of this game kept that option as well.

Now the negatives in this game are very minor and to most people they probably would not bother. One of the negatives is they are a few lags in this game. The lags are not bad like they are in some other hacks. What I mean is its not going to cause you to go into a pit or anything like that. But it does slow the game down. The original game best that I remember did not have any lags in it. I wonder if it was due to the software that the makers of this game were using. Second, is you cannot revisit stages. It would have been nice had the makers of this game changed it to where one could. But I guess they were trying to keep it with the original game. I want to think Mega Man 2 is the only game that you cannot revisit stages. Mega Man 3 you cannot revisit the stages at first but later on in the game you get a chance to. So after you beat a stage in Roll Chan 2 you better make sure you got everything.

Overall I give Roll Chan 2 a good score of 8.9. The negatives in this game are very minor and most gamers would probably not even be bothered by them. This game has a lot going for it. Its a copy of the original, its fun, has good quality to it, good sound, and is a good game that is fun for everybody. The young to the old can enjoy this game. This game is also a good game to introduce somebody new to the series to. I would recommend this game to almost anybody. Getting to chose the difficulty level is a nice touch. The game is a great game to learn how Mega Man games work. The original Mega Man 2 was like that. Roll Chan 2 is a game that is not going to turn people away from the series just like how the original game was a good beginners game for new Mega Man players. I highly recommend you play this game even though it is a hack you will not be disappointed.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this game like I did. Blessings in Christ and happy gaming.
