Harambe's death.... such a controversial event. Some believe it was truly tragic, others believe the coverage and hyper were blown out of the water. Harambe's such a divisive figure.... and he's a monkey, guys! What do you think of him?

I think what happened was terrible and I'm still baffled by how a three year old managed to get into the zoo enclosure. It's on that kid's parents to have kept him safe and protected and they should have charges brought to them. They're not suitable for parenting, and I can say as a parent of two fast, exploratory children, they lose the right to have kids if their child gets into a zoo pen.

Saying that, I don't get all the memes about Harambe. I mean, yes, a gorilla was shot and killed because a human and his parents were stupid. But then all the lashback and all the pictures showed up on Facebook and everywhere else.

Harambe was unlucky. Maybe someone else can explain why there were so many memes. What's the big deal with this when there are other things going on in the world?

I don't know. My opinion was it was a bad event. That's the extent of it. I don't scream for justice for Harambe at night when I weep into my pillow in agony.

Listen. Typically, I enjoy the threads you make, as you have a lot of good ideas.

But I'm so glad Harambe is dead and I'm so glad the harambe meme is dead as well.

It's time to stop

I remember when this news story broke. Here is my opinion on this. What happened to Harambe the Gorilla was a tragedy. But I really think it raised a lot of questions. How did the child climb into his habitat area. Second were was the mother. She did not appear till he got down there?

I really felt like the mother neglected her child and she was lucky she did not get charged with child neglect. Had she been watching her child more none of this would have happened. Children are naturally curious so parents should have their children with them at all times in a place like the Zoo. Second the cage should have been child proof. A lot of zoos have very high fences so children cannot climb them. I also think people screaming and taking photos did not help the situation any. Most likely that made the Gorilla anxious. I strongly believe had the mother watched her child more carefully, had there been higher cages and people not took pictures. The event would not have happened the way it did.

OKAY FIRST OFF, HARAMBE IS NOT A MONKEY, HE WAS A GORILLA. MONKEYS ARE PRIMATES, GORILLAS ARE APES. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

I think people shouldn't have made memes about Harambe. They claim they are making memes in respect for him, but it is actually very disrespectful and rude to make jokes about a dead gorilla. The whole "dicks out for Harambe" thing really pisses me off. People need to stop clinging onto things and trying to make them funny.

yoshirulez! : Why would you be glad Harambe himself is dead? He wasn't even a meme until he died.

TheFadedWarrior : I'm really curious about your answer. There seemed to be a lot of emotion and maybe you're just matching Yoshi's energy level.

In this conversation, what's the difference if he gets called a monkey or a gorilla. They're both animals and they are both utterly defenseless in an enclosure at a zoo. Ultrajeff made a mistake. Why did you go all caps-lock on him?

I know, physiologically, the difference between a monkey and a gorilla. But, really, what's the difference here?

Harambe was NOT A MONKEY...he was an ape! And a close, dear friend of mine...

No justice, no peace.

It should have been the boy.

I think Harambe is in a better place now.

Personally, I thought what happened was a tragedy and as others have already mentioned, what happened was probably a result of the family not watching their child, and the zoo not having better enclosures. If one tries to think about the incident from Harambe's perspective, it was just another ordinary day of walking or sitting around at the zoo until a kid fell into his home. As for how the kid was allowed to fall into the enclosure in the first place, that's what we should be reflecting on so we can take action to make sure something like that never happens again.

In any case, may Harambe rest in peace.

Ghostbear1111 : I was mostly joking, just making fun of Harambe followers. It is a pretty big mistake to confuse a monkey with a gorilla though.

I still miss my gorilla pal.

He taught me so much. He entered my life with such force and left without even a whisper goodbye.

He's still protecting me. He always will.

Bad parenting accumulated very well to this.

If the mother's actions were more derelict and knowledgeable, this could've all be prevented, including the death of the poor gorilla who deserved the right to live. Indeed, as most of you pointed out, this could be attributed to child neglect entirely. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure their child's safety, not the zoo. By entering such an enclosure you have responsibility for the risk.

Though on the other hand, we can obviously see that the mother was pretty oblivious to the guidelines that the zoo set. Was this become of their ignorance or of the zoo's more neglectance, assuming that everyone already "knows how it goes.". If the latter is true, shame on them. That is entirely unorthodox.

As for the meme? I still am baffled how this sinister, and dark event can turn into such an empowering meme that spread like wildfire over the internet. By sharing something like this you have shame, either that or no dignity to lose.

Personally, I believe that prior to the United State’s election of 2016, we shouldn’t be allowed to elect a dead monkey as President whether or not you disliked both nominees. Together this and the “fake news” rant, which brought light to social media’s impact on the election, should never merged with politics because they’re both highly delicate issues. Is it okay to put these animals up for exhibit if we are just gonna turn around and shoot them whenever a child stumbles into a cage? Zoos really need to address this question as we move forward because all of these memers will cease to move forward.
