It may be a part of a bigger conversation on what happened in that landfill in New Mexico.

There's a great read by Snopes.com that walks you through the political, marketing, and staffing challenges faced by Atari when this all went down. There's a great story on the downfall of the whole thing.

Enjoy. It will answer your question more in-depth than you ever expected.

well as a person who grew up in the 80's and early 90's I will give you  my own opinion. I don't think it buried the Atari but it certainly did not help. The ET game was very horrible for the Atari. The graphics were horrible, the controls horrible and the sound made you just want to mute the game. In fact the game was so bad nobody hardly wanted to play it. Atari had made good games such as break out, and outlaw so many people were stunned that ET was so horrible of a game.

Now, as I stated I don't think it buried the Atari but it did not help it. A few years later the new NES would come out. The NES really caused the decline in the Atari. As the graphics for Mario and Mega Man games for the NES were amazing.

Atari eventually made too much shovelware and had a surplus inventory of their bad games they couldn't get rid of.
