The new PS4 4.50 update, codenamed Sasuke, is on it's way, and it's bringing with it some very big features.

Custom Wallpaper Returns
Remember the custom wallpaper option with the PS3, PSP, and even the current handheld, the PS Vita? Well the PS4 up until now has only allowed wallpapers bought from the PlayStation store, but not anymore! Starting with Sasuke, you'll be able to make your own wallpapers using screenshots. It's not yet clear whether this will only work with in-game screenshots, or if any imported pictures will work, but so far screenshots are all that have been mentioned specifically.

Posting To PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

You will now be able to post text, screenshots, or gifs, and even tag users and games in the PlayStation Network activity feeds, such as the "What's New" section. User submitted content will also show up under the "Live From PlayStation" app as well.

External Hard Drive Support
Saved the biggest for last. The PS4 came out this generation as the only console to allow you to change the internal hard drive without voiding your warranty, but no option for external HDD support unlike the others. Now Sasuke is set to remedy that, and allow you to attach an external hard drive with up to 8TB of storage space. To give you an idea of how helpful this is, compare the prices: a cheap 2TB HDD that will fit in a PS4 costs roughly the same as an 8TB external HDD, and an external 2TB HDD costs roughly 1/4 as much. This also removes the need for a large enough flash drive to run the PS4's content off for an internal HDD change, or re-downloading games and content after installing a new HDD.

More to come
There's more to Sasuke than the features mentioned above however. To see the rest of what's been revealed, visit the following link: (link removed as it glitches)
As always though, even the PlayStation team is keeping sealed lips about the full list of features that are coming, so to see what all it entails we'll have to just wait and see.

Not interested. I've always been more of Naruto

Bad jokes aside, it's already on 4.50? I think I updated it to less than 4.20 this same week, that's quite a big jump. Still, clearly shows the fierce dedication Sony puts on their newest console.

I'm only interested in the external hard drive support, it's the only thing I could really use (if I ever need it, things would have to change a lot before that happens). I'd like to see what else do they have in mind, maybe I get some good surprises.

Eirinn : This is good news, because as far as I knew, you had to mod your console to be able to use an HDD, and if Sony found out, they would ban your account.

EX Palen : Yep. Couldn't help but think of you when I saw the name Sasuke.

I'm super excited about the external hard drive thing, especially since I had a very pricey flash drive and a 2TB HDD in my cart on Amazon when I found the news. lol It's saving me so much money I'll probably get the 8TB and still be saving about $100. :3

The custom wallpaper is great news too, since I was on the verge of buying a theme as well. So excited to see this and what else they have. Oh and since the link refused to work (perhaps because it contained the word update) I'll tell you in short: the other new features that were revealed were a Quick Menu refresh, Blue Ray 3D video support for PSVR, and uh...something else that I forgot. Guess I won't tell you all. xD

thing1 : Nah, the PS4 allowed internal HDD upgrades under warranty. In fact the new blog post talking about this update also mentioned that you could do so, plus their site offers downloads of the current Firmware so you can install a new HDD. That was their alternative to external HDD support. This is much better though since it's easier and far cheaper.

Eirinn : What I'm saying is that you previously weren't allowed to have an EHD, or else you risk getting banned if Sony found out.
Because you couldn't use an EHD without modding your console.

At least, that's what my roommate and some of my friends told me.

thing1 : You could, but you had to essentially make a custom set up for it.
As long as you didn't start hacking away at the PS4 and you could return it to factory condition, it was still covered.

Eirinn :
Did they mention if you are able to install/run games from the external?
IIRC, the PS3 allowed you to move videos, saves, images, etc. to an external but not to play games from them.

thing1 : Oh okay, yeah that may be true. I misunderstood what you meant. Sorry about that.

Vanelan : Yeah, it says the content shows up in the Content Launcher, and that games and applications can be downloaded directly to the external hard drive. The save files are stored on the PS4 still, but it appears the external data is still fully accessible without transferring anything. I could be wrong, but there's nothing to indicate otherwise. I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I see confirmation either way.

Eirinn : I searched a bit and Polygon says that you will be able to play games from the external. :3
Typically they aren't wrong about that kinda thing.

So I guess my 2TB external is finally gonna get some use.

Super hyped to get external HDD support. I have a 1 TB external, so the size of my PS4 jumps from 500 GB all the way to 1.5 TB. Definitely going to be a game changer. Might even convince me to get a bigger external HDD.

Forgive the n00b question, but the external HDDs run through USB, right? If so, would that have an impact on load times since the USB connection is slower, or do I have no idea what I'm talking about?

Vanelan : Ah, thanks. I was hoping so.

legacyme3 : Yeah, my hard drive has been full since probably last summer, so I'm already setting back some money for an 8TB. Hopefully once I get it that'll be the end of my storage struggles. If not I may need addiction therapy instead of a new hard drive...

m0ssb3rg935 : PSH! Noob! Uh...I have no idea about the slow down. If so I guess you could always shuffle the games you play most to the system, and the ones you play least to the external HDD. But I don't mind a little more load time since none of my thirty or forty PS4 games have any load time except when first launching the game, or in the case of Arkham Knight, there's a loading screen when you die, and in Shadow of Mordor when you fast travel it takes a second or two I think. Otherwise zero load time so an added second or two of load time wouldn't be too bad. Worth the trade anyway.

(Sorry for double post )
m0ssb3rg935 :
Eirinn :
USB 3.0 has a 5 gigabit transfer rate. (roughly 625MBPS)
Sata III has a 6 gigabit transfer rate. (roughly 750MBPS)

In theory, the internal hard drive will be slightly faster.
There are a lot of other factors that play into it, but if you go strictly by the numbers here, it probably wouldn't be noticeable until some really large files come into play. Even then, it could be a matter of a minute or 2.

Vanelan :

Maybe if I can get some poor guy to trade some Amazon money for Viz! I'm kind of broke right now, and all my disposable income is going towards the Switch and a couple March releases.
