“Tiffany and I were going back home after going to the town square with Kimberly, a crush of mine. Tiffany asked me the question “why Kimberly and I have nothing special in our relationship”.

Joshua: “Well... How to put it in a child-friendly way...”
Tiffany: “Hey! I’m 10 and a half!”
Joshua: “...and thus a child.”
Tiffany: “But... mom said...”
Joshua: “Well, if you turn 12, you indeed aren’t a normal child anymore... Of course still a child, but then you’re basically a teenager, like Kimberly and me.”
Tiffany: “Oh? I didn’t knew that!”
Joshua: “Heh... Anyway, Kimberly and I like each other a lot and we want to spend our lives further with each other. But I don’t think we’ll go any further than a relationship.”
Tiffany: “Really?...”
Joshua: “...Actually, I wish we could. Maybe I should tell her.”
Suddenly, I remember something.
Joshua: “Oh, by the way, I recently finished fixing your iPad. But I forgot to give it back... Sorry.”
Tiffany: “Nah, it’s okay! Thanks, bro!”
Joshua: “Heh, no problem, sis!”
Once we arrived at our home, we didn’t see mom or dad in the living room. We looked everywhere, but they weren’t in the house. Tiffany and I were looking at some unusual spots. And in 2 minutes...
Tiffany: “Found them!”
Tiffany found them at the neighbors their house. They apparently gave something there. I came downstairs, as I was upstairs to look for them.
Joshua: “Should I tell them we’re back?”
Tiffany: “Or we can hide.”
Joshua: “Uh, I don’t thi-...”
Tiffany ran up to the couch in the living room and went on her knees there. She went to the ground. I was left alone. I decided to join her. I ran to the kitchen and went to the basement. And that wasn’t a smart idea, to be honest... And why? I went downstairs and the first few things I saw were cobwebs, mice and spiders.
Joshua: “Geez, maybe a cleanup is needed badly...”
I suddenly heard a sound in front of me. It sounded like a footstep. I was getting scared. Was someone else here as well? I heard it again. The footstep. Like in someone wearing a shoe with high heels and then clacking it on the ground. Then I saw light from outside the window. I saw fireworks launching into the air. Though it’s not the day now, some teenagers apparently like to test it out now. But as soon as it exploded, I heard the same sound. The ‘clacking high-heel shoe’. Heh. It were only fireworks. I turned around and suddenly saw a really, really huge spider hanging in front of my face. I really am not afraid of spiders, but this one in front of you even creeps dad out. No one in our house have managed to catch and release it. The spider was as big as... I don’t know. It’s a really huge spider. I yelled and felt like I was trapped. It was hanging there, on a string made from its own material used for its cobweb. I went around the spider and ran up the stairs, back to the kitchen. I was still yelling hysterically and dashed through the door. It went open hardly and then closed itself again. Mom and dad were back in the meantime and Tiffany crawled up from behind the couch. They were all looking at me. Once i calmed down, mom asked me what's wrong.
Amy: “Josh? What happened?”
Joshua: “Oh, that stupid spider downstairs scared me again...”
Bruce: “That spider can’t help he looks so creepy. And what were you doing there anyway?”
Tiffany went up to mom and dad.
Tiffany: “We were playing hide and seek. Heh, my bro found the perfect spot, it seems! Haha!”
Later on, mom, dad, Tiffany and I were in the living room, on a couch or soft chair and we were talking about the visit to the Christmas market.
Joshua: “And we spoke to the mayor as well.”
Amy: “The mayor?”
Joshua: “Yeah, he was inspecting the market. I asked him to make an appointment for the event I was going to organize.”
Bruce: “Event? What event?”
Joshua: “Well, I thought a Christmas event on the town square could be great. Besides, the money goes to a social organization which helps the children in need... heh...”
Bruce: “...I don’t find that funny. I mean, who will pay for the event then?”
Amy: “That’s what I asked as well. But Santa Claus helps them, I heard.”
Bruce: “Santa Claus? I thought lies were simple these days!”
I went up from the couch.
Joshua: “Dad! Santa is not a lie! He was at the toy store, telling some stories and gave a hairclip to Tiffany!”
Bruce: “Joshua, I don’t like how you talk to me.”
Joshua: “Dad, please! Listen! We’ll have a wonderful Christmas with everyone then! We’ll have fun, we’ll forget any bad situations and we’ll be celebrating Christmas together! With everyone!”
Bruce: “Joshua, sit down. I need to tell you something.”
Joshua: “Fine... Then I’ll go to Kimberly if that’s okay.”
I went back on the couch I sat on. Next to me was Tiffany, in front of us was our dad and on our right was our mom. On our left was no couch or chair.
Bruce: “You may go after I told you this.”
Joshua: “Okay...
Dad told us about his childhood.
Bruce: “When I was Tiffany’s age, my parents told me something important about Christmas. They told me Christmas is about being together with your family. That Christmas is for fun.”
Dad moved a bit closer to me.
Bruce: “So it doesn’t really matter if we celebrate it with everyone, Joshua... It matters if we celebrate it with our family or alone. So forget about the event and let’s have a great Christmas together.”
I was thinking about an alternative idea. If it’s about celebrating with family, and if the McKinsey family (of which is my parents, my sibling and me) has a big house... Why not hosting a party for my parents their friends, Tiffany’s friends and perhaps my friends too? It not everyone in this town, but it’s still being together.
Bruce: “Josh? Did you hear what I said?”
Joshua: “Uh, yeah. I heard it.”
Bruce: “What did I say?”
Joshua: “You said... uh... about the event... eh...”
Bruce: “You didn’t hear me right. I said that it doesn’t matter if we celebrate Christmas with everyone in town, it matters if we celebrate it with family or alone.”
Joshua: “Hm... I have a question, though...”
Bruce: “Ask ahead.”
Joshua: “Should we invite our friends for a party here? If all our friends is too much, we can just invite specific people...”
My parents were looking at each other. Then they looked back to me.
Bruce: “Uh...”
Amy: “Well, I don’t see why you shouldn’t be hosting a party for your friends.”
Joshua: “Mom, it’s not only MY friends, but Tiffany’s friends too.”
Tiffany: “Yeah!”
Amy: “But Joshua, dear, aren’t there going to be a bit too much people then?”
Joshua: “...You’re right. Sorry, Tiffany.”
Tiffany: “Bummer...”
Dad was thinking. A few seconds later, he said something.
Bruce: “Actually... Honey, I think it’s unfair for Tiffany then.”
Amy: “Huh? Oh, you and Tiffany may invite your friends then. Both of you.”
Tiffany: “Yay!”
Joshua: “Thanks, mom!”
Amy: “When are you going to host it?”
Joshua: “Tomorrow? Is that okay?”
Mom looked at dad again. Dad was thinking.
Bruce: “Uh, sure! Why not?”
Joshua: “Cool! Then we should prepare ourselves!”

The following night...

I couldn’t sleep well. It was Sunday the 25th of December. And to top it up, it was 2:45 AM. I forgot to go to Kimberly a few hours earlier. I had the mood to talk to her anyway. And to hang around a bit. But the main reason why I couldn’t sleep well was basically because of that party tomorrow. Technically, the party is today. But if it’s night, we always say “tomorrow”. But now back to the party. I was thinking the worst things for the party... Will the guests like it? Will the guests enjoy it? This is the first time I had to host a party. Suddenly, I heard a noise from downstairs. It sounded like the water tap was used. I went out of my bed and realized it was very cold in my room. I went off my bed once I was sitting and I quietly opened the door. I didn’t want to wake mom, dad or Tiffany up. I silently sneaked to the stairs and went down. But once I put my right foot on the 6th plank, it squeaks once again. That plank always makes a lot of noise, as if it’s a trigger to alert others. I forgot it was that one plank, though. But once I went down even more quietly, I saw Tiffany coming up to me. She seemed to be surprised. We talked to each other really silent.

Tiffany: “I thought you were asleep!”
Joshua: “I thought you were a robber! I just had to make sure whether it was one of us or not!”
Tiffany: “Wait... Why are you awake?”
Joshua: “Why are YOU awake?!”
Tiffany: “I had to drink some water. I was thirsty. And you?”
Joshua: “I can’t sleep... I’m too excited and too nervous for tomorrow...”
Tiffany: “I can understand that... All our friends are coming here, then.”
Suddenly, the lights in the hallway upstairs turned on. I heard someone coming downstairs. It was our mom, who woke up because of us.
Amy: “What in Earth’s name are you two doing here this late?!”
Joshua: “I couldn’t sleep...”
Tiffany: “And I was thirsty.”
Amy: “Tiffany, you also just could have taken some water in the bathroom! And Joshua, go to bed and at least TRY to sleep!”
Joshua: “Okay...”
Tiffany: "Okay..."
I went upstairs and went to my room. I went in my bed again and tried to fall asleep. I succeeded once it felt like I waited 30 minutes. And I was dreaming about completing a video game shortly after I fell asleep.

The next morning...

I woke up at 11:20 AM. It was snowing outside. I went out of my bed and switched to my normal clothes. Then I went downstairs and saw my mom and dad preparing some food for Tiffany’s friends and my friends. There would be a total of 11 people coming to our house, as Tiffany and I never really were seeking for friends. But we still have friends. You may wonder how that’s possible... But I prefer to keep that to myself. Anyway, Tiffany was playing a videogame on a gaming console for our TV. She was playing a game with knights and dragons and... it seemed to be a medieval themed game. She was beating up a lot of trolls in the game. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Joshua: “I’ll get it.”
I opened the door. The mayor was at our house. He had a box with him, and it was as big as a pug is. And he seemed to have made some time for us. But... the event is going to be discontinued... And we forgot about the mayor.
Mayor: “Hello, Joshua. I promised you to make an appointment for the event.”
Joshua: “Oh... yeah, about the event...”
Mayor: “Yes?”
Joshua: “I... heard from my parents it’s better not to do that.”
Mayor: “...I see. Mind if I take the project from you entirely?”
Joshua: “No, I don’t mind. It’s Christmas, so I can’t say no to the mayor for something for Christmas which makes people happy.”
Mayor: “That’s true. Well, Joshua, I’m going back now. As a reward for helping anyway, here’s a gift. A young person asked me to give you that. I thought i could deliver it here. It’s Christmas anyway.”
The mayor grabbed the box he had with him and gave it to me. It wasn’t heavy when I carried it.
Joshua: “Thanks, Mr. Mayor. And I help anyone. So it’s not a problem.”
Mayor: “Alright. Merry Christmas.”
Joshua: "Merry Christmas."
The mayor went back to the town hall. And I went back in the house. My mom saw me with the box.
Amy: “Who was that? And what is that?”
Joshua: “That was the mayor, for the event. He said we would take the project from us, with my permission. And this box? I have no clue.”
Amy: “Well, maybe we can look?”
I put the box on the table. I opened it and saw something that surprised my mom and me. And it was very, very useful at the moment.
