Mega Man 2 is often regarded as the game that put the Mega Man franchise on the map. In fact, it is this game that propelled Mega Man to become one of the all time most popular video game icons and characters. Mega Man is often regarded as one of the most popular video game characters along with Sonic and Mario. Mega Man 2 High Jump is a hack of Mega Man 2. So I will be comparing this hack to the original Mega Man 2. Story: 9 This is your typical revenge story line. Mega Man defeated the evil Dr. Wily in the previous game. Wily being humiliated that he was defeated decides to make 8 new robot masters on his own. Wily sends the 8 new robots after Mega Man and to conquer the world. Mega Man is sent out by Dr. Light to defeat the new threat and put an end to Wily's Conquest. Mega Man heads out for battle once again. Except this time he is equipped with a higher jumping power (Did he get Kirby's Jump power when Kirby eats a high jump enemy) eh probably not. But still Mega Man can jump higher now. Will his new jumping ability give him the edge over this new threat. Okay the plot was not changed that much from the original. The only difference is Mega Man has a higher jump capability. That minor change fits the plot nicely. I really liked the story of Mega Man 2. It introduces the 8 new robot masters well and it explains why Dr. Wily is bent on revenge. Its your simple but typical revenge story line. So I will keep the rating I gave the original a 9 out of 10. Graphics and Controls: 9 Mega Man 2 fixed the graphical problems of the very first Mega Man game. Mega Man 2 had very good graphics. The backgrounds are amazing, the sprites are amazing, and there are no lags. Mega Man 2 established the solid graphics that the franchise is known for. So how does Mega Man 2 High Jump compare? Well, the graphics are really the same. The stages have not been changed, the colors have not been changed and the sprites are the same. I'm glad the maker of this game did not change a thing. I have played hacks were the graphics were way off from the original. So I was glad they kept the same graphics. The controls in Mega Man 2 were awesome. In this hack they are no different. The controls are still very smooth. Even with the high jump ability the controls work no different. Though there are times the high jump ability can work against you (more on that later on in the review). Overall, I think the graphics and controls are nicely done and I give them a 9 out of 10. Sound: 10 The sound is amazing in this game just like it was in the original game. In fact, the sound was not changed. Mega Man 2 established another thing the franchise is known for and that is awesome music. The stages music makes you just want to pause and listen. Personally I like Wood Man's stage theme. There is not one bad soundtrack in this game. Also enemy shots and Mega Man's buster shots were also left unchanged. I liked how Mega Man 2 established the sound when you get hit. It lets you know that you have been shot. The enemies sounds let you know they mean business. Since the sound was left unchanged. I stand by my original rating of 10 out of 10. Replay Value: 9 I remember when I first got Mega Man 2. My parents got it for as a Christmas gift. I played it a lot until Mega Man 3 came out. Mega Man 2 is still a fun game to play. Though it has been passed by other Mega Man games like 3,4,5, 6,7, IV and V. Still its nice to go back to the game that really started it all. After playing this hack my opinion does not change. This is a hack that you will want to play again and again. It is that good and is one of the few hacks that resembles the original game. The real difference is the high jump ability. Other than that the replay rating does not change. I give it a 9 out of 10. This is one game you will want to play again Depth: 7 Mega Man games are also known for their depth. However, the high amount of depth really started with Mega Man 3. Still, Mega Man 2 did have quite a bit of depth to it and you could argue it served as a template. There are secret areas and different paths in this game. You will need to chose your path wisely in the stages that have different paths because if you miss an item you won't be able to go back and get it. There are also power ups to collect. The stages are about right and seem to be the right length. Some stages are longer than the others. The fortress stages are very long. So while Mega Man 2 does not have the depth that future games held it was still good. This version of Mega Man 2 has the same depth features as the original. Since there were no changes made. I don't think it deserves a higher or lower rating. So, 7 out of 10 sounds about right. Difficulty: 7 Mega Man games are known to be difficult. But Mega Man 2 (original version) is often recommended as a beginner game for new players. The original Mega Man 2 had its difficult moments but it was not as difficult as future Mega Man games. The original Mega Man 2 is great to get new players used to the control of Mega Man game. So how is the difficulty in High Jump. The difficulty is really not changed despite having a high jump ability. The high jump can make stages easier as you can jump across pits and spikes without having to worry about messing up. In addition, the High jump can also allow you take out airborne enemies or bosses that jump a lot. It can make it easy fighting those types of enemies. However, there are times were the high jump can work against you. The water stages is were it can really work against you. In water you can jump higher in Mega Man games. Often times the water stages are covered with death spikes. In this game if your are not careful one jump will send you to your doom. So that is a stage the high jump hurts you. Another stage (Quick Man) the high jump can work against you when you have to dodge the laser beams of death. It is so easy to jump high right into a laser beam or land on one. It can also mess with your timing. That is really the only difference in terms of difficulty for this hack. The robot masters a few can be tricky but once you learn how they move they become easier. The game also helps you out as most of the Robot Masters except for a few take 2 units of damage with each shot so that helps. The enemies can be a problem in tight places but they don't gang up on you like they do in other Mega Man games. So yeah, the high jump doesn't lower the difficulty because it can work against you at times. On the other hand it doesn't really raise the difficulty either because it allows you to jump over pits and spikes. Thus, I will stay with my original rating of Mega Man 2 in terms of difficulty 7 out of 10. The game does have its difficult moments and as I stated the high jump helps you as well as hurts you. Still, this game is easy to get the hang of. Overall Rating 8.8 Mega Man 2 has had several hacks made. Most of them resemble the original except for a few of them. High Jump really resembles the original. In fact if you did not see the title in this game you would think you are playing the original. I think that is what the maker of this hack was aiming at. The hack really sticks to the original game. The main difference is Mega Man can jump higher. This game has a lot going for it so I will start with the positives. I really like how the graphics and sound were not changed. As I mentioned earlier the original Mega Man 2 had very good graphics that set the bar for future Mega Man games. The sound also established awesome music in the Mega Man games. In addition, you are playing Mega Man 2 with a higher jump ability. I also had fun playing this game and it is one that I will play again. If your a classic Mega Man fan you will enjoy this game. Now there were a few negatives in this game. The first being how the high jump works against you. As I covered under the difficulty section the extra jump ability can haunt you at times in the water stages and when you have to dodge laser beams. These times it seems like its difficult for the wrong reasons. I have to ask did the maker of this game consider Mega Man water physics when making this. In the original game and future Mega Man games Mega Man can jump higher anyway in water. Maybe the maker of this game could not have let the high jump effect Mega Man's jumping in water, since he has the high jump ability in water. Also, like the original game if you miss an item too bad. You cannot revisit stages to get the item. In other games you could go back and revisit a stage. This one not so much. So you have to take a chance on which path you go in a stage until you memorize which paths lead to items. That is one thing I thought was a negative in the original game. So part of me hoping since this was a hack that would not be the case but oh well. Mega Man High Jump is a very fun game to play. The negatives I mentioned are very minor and should not deter anyone from enjoying this hack. Some gamers may not even be bothered by the negatives I pointed out. Even with the high jump this would be a great game to introduce Mega Man to somebody. It also would be good to let new players play this game to get used to the controls. It is close to the original Mega Man 2 as the big difference is the extra jumping power. Mega Man 2 is an all time classic. So it is not surprise that the maker of this game kept it that way. I really think that is what the maker of this hack was trying to do. It shows how this hack took time and a lot of effort. So would I recommend this game? Yes I would recommend this game as well as the original. I think both are very good games to play for any Mega Man fan as well as new players. At the end of the day I give Mega Man 2 High Jump a solid 8.8 out of 10. This is a very solid hack of a classic |
