I have played several instruments in the past few years, but I can't really play any of the ones I've learned, this makes me want to learn something I play without getting too loud. (I live in a barracks... Which is very similar to an apartment, except that I have a roommate who lives in a separate room with a shared common area.) So, Trombone, and Trumpet are definitely out. While I would want to "learn" piano, I don't really have a good option as far as room. (Space, if you will.)

Enough with a background to this... I want to learn guitar... But where do I start? Electric, Acoustic? Like an Electric Acoustic type? (Acoustic that can get plugged into an amp.) Where do I begin? What model do you suggest?

Hope you guys can help me out with this little predicament of mine.

Well...what about acoustic? Since it's not so loud and it's perfect for learning how to play any type of guitar.
Electric is louder than acoustic , so I guess that your roommate would not be really amused.  Also remember that when you'll start your guitar lessons , you've got to be more patient since guitar isn't an easy instrument. Anyway good luck.

Tama10 : But you see, I can plug in headphones into the amp... making it quieter... at least I think I can.

Do you recommend any particular models of acoustic guitars? (Or brands...)

Thanks for the input!

You're welcome. Also um...I don't sorry.  But why don't you check music stores? You'll find a good one there for sure.

darthyoda : I'm going to second what tama said about stores, but specifically I want to suggest going to a place like Sam Ash if there's one near you. I've been in there a few times and not only do they have everything that you could think about, they can help you and suggest everything.

You can use headphones with an electric. Although, you'll need an amp. This will be more quiet than any acoustic. I can maybe give pointers as you can hear my music at www.soundcloud.com/user-871935484. I believe you will enjoy the music. I work hard on it. Anyway, electric guitars are easier to learn on because it's easier to push the strings down to the fretboard. This, your fingers won't take as much punishment. Most people stop learning guitar because their fingers begin to hurt too much. If that happens, just put it down and come back later. Do the same if you start to get frustrated. Good luck! It's a passion of mine and it's very therapeutic.

Electric is the way to go my friend. If you want a good starter electric guitar I'd recommend the Epiphone Les Paul Junior. Note I said Epiphone, not Gibson. There is a Gibson Les Paul Junior, But its about 1000$ more, whereas you can pick up the Epiphone variant for less than 100$ at a pawn shop or music store. As for an amp, You don't need a particularly big one if you want to use headphones, just a small one. But if all you want to do is play it with headphones then you can get special amps that plug into the guitar directly, that you then plug headphones into. if you really wanted, you could also plug speakers in as well. Also, you will want to use a pick. Don't be like me and tear a hole in your thumb because you think you don't think you need a pick.
