I really hope that someone proves me wrong on this. I went online to Gamestops website because I wanted to apply for a job. I applied a year ago but it just so happens that the hiring was literally two days after I applied, so I don't think my application was even looked at in the first place.

When I went to the application this time around, something about the application was different. I don't mean it looked different or they asked different questions, I mean a major aspect of any basic entry level job area. I looked at a bunch if different positions, all the requirements and qualifications, and from the looks of it, it appears as though Gamestop no longer gives part time jobs.

I know right? The foundation of Gamestop isn't some high level corporation, its basic easy jobs, but not for people who want to work part time?

They basically wont even look at your application unless you preemptively agree to work 40 something hours a week.

What is this?

Gamestop is actually a pretty big company in my eyes as they got over 6,000 retail stores which means they probably got well over 10,000 employees if not more. I know there are companies out there that prefer part time to avoid paying for additional benefits. Maybe they figure if they hire full time workers there will be less turnovers, the workers will be more dedicated or they will save money by not having to re-train people over and over again. Or maybe they are simply just looking for full time positions at this time at the location you applied at. You would think companies like Gamestop would be thriving on part time workers especially during the holidays.

I did a quick search and it looks like Gamestop locations are not franchises like Subway so they most likely operate the same across the board. I think they probably do have part time jobs but it sounds like what you said they just prefer full timers for whatever reason.

zanderlex :

I haven't applied to Gamestop in a longggg time, but it's possible it's just the store you are applying at (since every store hires independently) is only looking for full-time workers.

It's the same with my job. It's a corporation-run retail job, and sometimes, we don't even accept part-time applications, just because there's no room for part-time associates. The grim reality is that most available work in some retail settings is full-time work.

It's also possible there was an error, or you are looking at it wrong. Gamestop definitely still hires part-time.

Proof can be found on their website:

"Seasonal Sales and Service Associates
Department: Store Operations
Reports To: Store Leader
Status: Part-time, non-exempt"

Assistant Store Leader
Department: Field Store Operations
Reports To: Store Leader
Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time

Sales Associate
Department: Field Store Operations
Reports To: Store Leader
Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time

Shift Lead
Department: Field Store Operations
Reports To: Store Leader
Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time

Dedicated Cricket Consultant
Department: Field Store Operations
Reports To: Store Leader
Status: Non-Exempt, Part-Time

There are possibly even more positions beyond that.

I think it's just that there are no open jobs at those positions, which is why you might have trouble finding it. If you want more specific help, I can help lead you through that, in private, since you don't want all your personal info easy to find.

legacyme3 : Thanks, I guess it could have just been that there were no open positions at all, which could still be just as bad though. I didn't see any of those positions listed at all in my whole city when I applied.

zanderlex :

I don't know where you live exactly, so it's not 100%, but I'm just going to assume you live in New York City, New York.

I found 13 Retail Staff jobs in that city.

Obviously there are a lot of positions for Management (full-time), but there are at least 13 retail staff openings in the city itself.

If you want to apply your own city (if NYC isn't where you live), use this link and filter by the city of your choice.

Good luck!

legacyme3 : Thanks. No wonder I couldn't find any, that's an awfully low number. I am in NYC but I can easily list 3 dozen Gameatop locations in my borough alone so having 13 throughout the whole city is incredibly low. You would think that just one store would have at least a handful.

zanderlex :

Maybe, but with large cities, there tends to be a balance of who gets hired where, and there's usually an agreement that if one place has two or three openings, and another has only one, that applicants to the place with one opening get shuttled to the one with two or three.

It is done this way so in case there's a shortage of applicants for whatever reason, they can operate while only slightly under staffed, instead of moderately under staffed.

legacyme3 : If that's the case, then they still changed A LOT since last time. It's been like a year since I last applied and back then there were hundreds of part time openings, and it should have been even more now for the Christmas season.

zanderlex :

It's possible people just got the jump on it, so there are less jobs available this time of year.

Or maybe they just haven't opened the floodgates on the "seasonal" jobs yet.
