Pokémon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Avatar: The Last Airbender
We've all watched those cartoons that we didn't know were animes at the time, but we have all watched that one show that's gotten us hooked on the entire genre...

Year before last in school, my friend was really into this series called Black Butler. She had Sebastian as her phone wallpaper, she had Pop Funkos, the mangas, a shirt, and so on. One day, when she was going on about how hot Sebastian was, she said I should really watch it.

So, I checked it out, and it's actually a good show! Here's the basic rundown:
After his parents are murdered, a 12-year-old aristocrat Ciel Phantomhive hires Sebastian the demon butler...at the price of his soul after his parents are avenged.
So, it's basically Batman, but with Alfred kicking all the keister.

And that's what got me into anime.
What shows have initially gotten you into the genre?

Sonic X.

Nope, I am not kidding.

I loved Sonic Adventure 2, watched all three seasons of the Anime, and played through all 10 endings of Shadow the Hedgehog. . . That series made an impact on me.

After that it was Madoka Magica, and the first half of season one of Sword Art Online. And that's all I've watched though I wanted to see Fate Zero and Cowboy Bebop. Those two are pretty good I hear.

What I really wish is that I actually remembered to try and get ahold of them. My brother has Fate Zero but I keep forgetting to actually put it on my USB.

Black Butler sounds interesting. Is it really demonic, and does it get stupid anywhere, or is it pretty well done like Deathnote during the first season?

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

To clarify, I'm not necessarily addicted to it, a lot of it is mediocre and I only really enjoyed things with a nice art style, otherwise it's just pure and utter s***

I think it was Black Butler, which led to Future Diary, which led to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Other than those I'm not watching any other series right now because the majority of anime sucks pretty bad.

I always loved watching cartoons, but I think the first anime I ever saw was Yu-Gi-Oh!. I don't really count that one though because I didn't know the difference between it and and other cartoons. If we're only counting what got us into consciously watching anime, then I think it started with Code Lyoko when it was on that one block on Cartoon Network back..... jeez, maybe a decade ago? Then I started watching Naruto on Toonami. The original, not the reboot on Adult Swim. After that, I had a very unhealthy obsession with the show. And I mean It was to the point that I was memorizing the hand sign sequences for various jutsu. I still remember a couple of them. After getting out of it, I haven't really watched much anime since, with the exception of maybe watching a little Naruto Shippuden, since I finished the original series, and watching all of BlazBlue: Alter Memory. I know I'll just fall back into binge watching anime for a week at a time if I get beck into it again. Another reason is that I'm actually kinduh self conscious about it, as silly as that is. I can't really explain it, I'm just not comfortable watching it around other people.

EDIT: Typo fix - since, not sense

Sword legion : Black Butler is actually an awesome anime; it has a fair balance of good pacing, crime mystery, comic relief, fighting and such.
The characters are all lovable (including a flamboyant chainsaw-wielding grim reaper who goes from initial villain to goofball who crushes on Sebastian), they have their pasts, which makes it more interesting. It doesn't really make use of that cheap anime sex appeal either!
I do recommend that you watch it! The dubbed version actually sounds pretty nice compared to subbed.

For me, Naruto and Dragon Ball Z are what got me interested in the world of anime. I started avidly watching it when I was in 8th grade and my interest has only ballooned since then. After Naruto and DBZ, I eventually started watching Sword Art Online, Attack On Titan, Hellsing and several other popular anime. Ever since initially taking an interest to anime, I've noticed that I've come to like a wide variety of genres ranging from horror to adventure as well as psychological/mystery and even vampire anime as well. Altogether, I attribute my liking of anime to Naruto and Dragon Ball Z since they were the first ones I ever watched.

Like many people,DBZ when it was on Toonami. Toonami introduced a lot of shows that I grew to like. Rurouni Kenshin is cool show.

Ghost In The Shell. I saw it recommended on Siskel & Ebert way back in the day and tracked it down at my local video store. Good times.

Edward Dylon : Pokemon and Cardcaptors, I believe. By the way, Avatar isn't anime. It was made in America by Americans. Anime is made in Japan. Avatar is just an amazing cartoon that takes influence from a common anime style.

I did watch Digimon when I was younger but I wouldn't really consider that my gateway. What really started me off was actually Studio Ghibli films like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. It just kinda grew from there. I wouldn't consider myself a super avid anime viewer but when I start watching something I enjoy I will usually finish it.

Mine was sailor moon like literally it was the first thing ever! Then pokemon came long lol. I think those are the most 2 that got me into anime along with old school DBZ, and many others. Its amazing when you think about it of how you got into anime in the first place.

Well, more or less it was Toonami in it's entirety way back when before it was rebooted on Adult Swim. Also, I've been watching Adult Swim since it debuted, so a lot of the original Anime they played back in the day were ones I fell in love with too.

Shows like Dragon Ball Z, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, and even Beyblade when I was young were all shows that I greatly enjoyed. Pokemon would be on the list as well. Sadly my memory is completely destroyed from how I was living in my young adult years, but I do still remember a great deal of them fondly.

I think it's been a decade or more since I've watched Outlaw Star. Need to check that gem out again ^^

Okay, I recently found out that about eight years ago, Cartoon Network did an anime version of The Powerpuff Girls, and I'm like "WHYYYYY??"
Sometimes, things get totally unnecessary!

My first anime was Pokemon like most people though I also watched many other animes based on trading cards or toys like yu-gi-oh, bakugan, digimon etc. I don't really consider any of them my gateway because at the time I still didn't really know what anime was and I didn't go out of my way to watch them (kind of hard since I didn't have internet), I just got to watch them when they were on TV.

For my actual gateway anime, I would say there were two. Naruto Shippuden and Bleach. I started watching the former knowing a little a bit about the original series and quickly got into it despite never having watched much of the original. Bleach I ended up getting into later after hearing it was similar to Naruto Shippuden, I didn't like it as much at first but grew to enjoy it even more due to loving the concept of zanpakutos and liking that it was a bit darker in its theme. That made it my favorite anime for some time.

Ironically now I don't really like either of them too much, especially Naruto Shippuden which I've grown to dislike. I realized they're full of filler compared to other animes and it takes way too long for the plot to progress. That was fine when I was younger and had all the time in the world to watch them but now I easily get bored and feel like I'm wasting time when I could be watching something better. I do sometimes look back at them for nostalgia but that's about  it. I stopped watching Bleach when the anime ended, and Naruto Shippuden I stopped following, a couple of years ago now I believe.

Aside from that, some studio Ghibli stuff (My neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away etc.) also really helped grow my interest in anime and Japan and was probably part of what inspired me to try to get into them in the first place.

Ojamajo Doremi.

I saw anime like Sailor Moon and InuYasha when I was really little but didn't understand the concept of anime. I was 8 and I saw Ojamajo Doremi in English as Magical DoReMi  and I fell in love with it. I ended up looking it up, and bam, I learned anime.

Since then, I've been watching anime.

Hardly an anime for a 12 year old, but it was on Sci-Fi channel's Saturday Anime.

They were like my Saturday morning cartoons. :3

My gateway anime was probably Pokemon. I embraced it from a very young age, and it ended up becoming such a huge part of me, and my future stylings. Without Pokemon, I'm not sure I would have even been into cartoons, let alone anime.

Cactuar : My story is pretty similar. I loved the Moomins as a child and later on I watched Pokemon and Digimon.

I can't remember my first real anime series but my first manga was Case Closed, which I got from our local library. But if I have to throw a guess I'd say my first anime was Cardcaptor Sakura. I was quite young at the time so my dad checked everything I watched online and if he approved I was allowed to watch the series. I did end up watching a few series that were a bit questionable taking my age into account (like Strawberry Panic) so I think my dad didn't do a very good job proof checking.

Hajime no Ippo got me into anime (I had previously watched pokemon when I was younger but I didn't care much for it) with its intense fight scenes and gorgeous animation. I can tell that the creator has a deep passion for the sport of boxing (the guy was a boxer and I think ran a gym at one point) as the show has a ton of information on the different fighting stances, styles, punches and the really crappy lifestyle that certain boxers go through in order to compete at the top level.
