Chapter 4: Into the woods...

Zoe said goodbye to her parents and went home. Mike, Jess, Anna, Ryan and Jake were near the van Mike uses for his tours. And they were in front of Zoe’s house.
Zoe: “Hey, guys! What’s with this reunion?”
Mike: “We’re going to the forest for a few days.”
Zoe: “Oh? Sounds cool, but... what are we going to do there?”
Mike: “Camping. That’s all.”
Ryan: “I was at his home and came up with the idea.”
Zoe looked a bit skeptical. Mike doesn’t love camping, but doesn’t dislike it either. He rarely goes on camping.
Zoe: “Are you two sure?”
Mike: “100 percent, Zoe. I mean, I had to do something fun with you guys since we said goodbye to Philip. But I forgot that the whole time, so...”
Zoe: “Okay then. I’m in.”
Mike: “Okay, then it’s settled. Everyone, take your seat. We’re going to the woods!”
Everyone went in the van. Anna and Ryan were at the back, then were Jake and Jess, then Zoe next to Mike. Everyone had a nice time talking with each other while going to the woods, except Anna. She was too shy towards Ryan. There was something with her that made her so shy. But no one knows what it was.

Once they arrived the woods, Jake opened the door of the van to let everyone out. Zoe opened her door and went out as well. And Mike was still in the van. He was staring at the woods. Jess noticed that, and while everyone was looking around, Jess went to Mike.
Jess: “Hey, Mike. What’s wrong?”
Mike: “Well, I need to admit something... But please don’t tell this to the others.”
Jess: “Okay then... Go ahead.”
Mike: “You know the rumors about that monster, right? The monster that lives here?”
Jess: “Uh... Yeah? What’s wrong with that myth?”
Mike: “Well, I came here to find out if it really exists. If the monster is indeed a myth or not. And if I told it to you guys at Zoe’s home, you guys wouldn’t join me...”
Jess: “You did what?”
Jess was getting pretty mad now.
Mike: “Sorry for lying to you, Jess... But we can only kill the monster together. I mean, he’s alone. And we’re not.”
Jess: “Mike, you don’t tell me you lied to me for a (****) myth, right?!”
Mike: “Jess, that’s not...”
Jess went away.
Jess: “Just leave me alone for a day.”
Mike sighed. He felt bad for offending his girlfriend by lying to her. But he can’t talk to her properly now. He went out of the van and left his keys in the van. He knew he was returning anyway. Zoe and Jake noticed Jess and went to her to talk with her.
Zoe: “Jess... What’s wrong?”
Jess: “Ask mister Van Houten, he knows it.”
Jess was facing the woods while sitting on a wooden bench. Mike went to Zoe and Jake.
Mike: “Maybe it’s better to leave her alone.”
Jess turned around. She went up from the bench.
Jess: “Oh, so now you decide what they do with me?!”
Mike: “No, but you’re mad, right?”
They were fighting.
Jess: “You don’t decide for me, Mike! I’ll say whenever they may talk to me or not! Not you!”
Mike: “Hey, I wasn’t...”
Jess: “What?! “Hey”?! My name’s Jess, not ‘Hey’! Now scram, I don’t want to see you anymore!”
Mike: “Well, that’s good, because I don’t want to see you anymore eithe-...”
Suddenly, a pretty short but heavy tree falls down to the ground. It almost lands on Anna, who was listening to music with her headphones on. Ryan dashed to her without a doubt and pushed her away.
Anna: “H-hey!”
Ryan fell next to Anna, with his arm over her. The tree misses Ryan’s short feet by 3 inches. It falls on the ground. It made a loud noise. Anna put off her headphones and was shocked to see what Ryan did.
Anna: “R-Ryan... Wow...”
Everyone was looking at where the two are, but they only saw the thick tree. It was a short one, but still. Anna was still on the ground, together with Ryan.
Anna: “Th-thanks, Ryan...”
Anna and Ryan went up. Anna cleaned her sweatshirt, which had leaves and dirt stuck to it.
Ryan: “Ah, it was nothing. I wouldn’t like to see someone like you being squeezed by a tree.”
Anna wanted to resist what she was going to do, but she did it anyway: He hugged Ryan tight.
Anna: “I was almost being killed! Thanks!”
Ryan looked at the others, who were looking at Anna and Ryan. Ryan started to blush.
Ryan: “Eh... You’re welcome...”
Anna: “No seriously, thanks!”
Anna suddenly realized she was still hugging Ryan. She quickly released him. She looked at the others, who were talking to each other a bit now. Jess was still upset towards Mike. And once Jess calmed down a bit more, the six were going to look for a good spot for their tents.

Once it was evening...

Jake couldn’t sleep. He was sitting on the ground, outside his tent. Zoe saw him and went to him.
Zoe: “Hey, Jakey.”
Jake: “Hey, honey...”
They gave each other a kiss and Zoe went next to Jake, on the ground.
Zoe: “What’s wrong?”
Jake: “Well, I feel very uncomfortable here... I don’t know how, but I feel like I’m going to lose one of you guys...”
Zoe: “Hm... Well, as long as we have each other, we can stand strong. And also, how can we possibly lose...”
Suddenly, Anna crawled and went out of her tent. She walked away, in front of Jake and Zoe.
Zoe: “Hey, Anna!”
She appeared to ignore Jake and Zoe and went deeper into the woods.
Zoe: “Anna! Wait, what are you doing?!”
Meanwhile, the others heard it all. They came outside as well. Jake and Zoe went up.
Jake: “ANNA! Come back!”
Anna didn’t hear the others. She continued walking into the woods. Jake saw Mike and Jess.
Jake: “Mike, Jess, I need you two to stay here. Ryan, Zoe and I go after Anna.”
Jake, Zoe and Ryan went after Anna. They disappeared in the distance.
Mike: “*yawn* Okay... Jess, you’ll stay here and warn the police if they don’t return.”
Jess: “And what about you, then?”
Mike: “I’m going to look for a friend who lives nearby. He knows what to do with that-one-animal.”
Jess was thinking deep. “That-one-animal”?
Mike: “The monster.”
Jess: “Oh, right. You know what? I’ll go with you.”
Mike: “Fine, but don’t ask a lot. We don’t want the monster to come.”
Jess: “The ‘monster’ doesn’t exist, but oh well.”
Meanwhile, Jake, Zoe and Ryan were at an enormous tree. And Anna was nowhere to see.
Ryan: “ANNA!!!”
Anna was yelling from the distance.
Anna: “RYAN?!”
Ryan: “ANNA! WHAT DID YOU DO?!”
Anna: “I...”
Anna appeared from a bush. She saw the others.
Anna: “Guys! I had no idea why, but my mind said I had to go here!”
Zoe: “Glad you’re safe, Anna.”
Ryan: “Come on, let’s go ba-...”
Suddenly, a lot of sounds came from the bush Anna came from. Ryan took a step forward.
Ryan: “Stay here, I’ll check what that sound is.”
Jake, Anna and Zoe were behind Ryan. Zoe checked her watch. It was 9:00 AM. But it’s still dark. Then Zoe noticed that in one second, her analog watch went forward 4 seconds. Her watch was speeding itself up! Ryan, meanwhile, looked in the bushes. He saw nothing.
Ryan: “Well, there’s no-...”
Suddenly, a white-skinned creature with tentacles came out of the bush Ryan looked in. And Zoe’s watch was going crazy when he came. The creature pushed Ryan against the tree that was behind him and held his arms against the tree with its tentacles. Ryan saw it’s white, soulless eyes with bloody tears.
Ryan: “H-HELP!!!”
Anna wanted to help him, but Jake stopped her.
Jake: “No, Anna! Then he will kill you!”
The monster scratched Ryan’s chest like so, that the creature opened Ryan’s chest. Blood went all over the place and Ryan squeezed his eyes from the pain.
Ryan: “AAAAAAH!!!”
The monster had enough space to stab Ryan in his heart. One of its tentacles was moved up and dashed to Ryan’s heart, stabbing him in the heart and letting blood being shattered everywhere again. Ryan was closing his eyes slowly. Anna cried a lot when she saw that.
Anna: “NOO!!! *sob* RYAAAAAN!!!!”
Anna was going to help Ryan, but Zoe stopped Anna by holding Anna to her.
Jake: “Guys... I think we’ll have to run now!”
Zoe took Anna’s hand and followed Jake, who ran away to flee.
Anna: “No, stop!! *sob* We NEED to help Ryan!!!”
Jake (while running): “He’s dead, Anna! He can’t be helped anymore!”
Anna cannot accept that. She MUST help Ryan. Like when Ryan saved her life. But Zoe held Anna’s arm too tight, so she couldn’t return anymore. They’ve lost Ryan for good.

Meanwhile...

Mike rang the doorbell of a house. Jess was next to him. Someone opened the door. It was Mike’s old friend. Mike mostly called his friend Vince, though that’s not his actual name.
Vince: “Heeey, Mike! Long time no see, buddy!”
Mike: “Look, can we come in? My friend is missing and we fear the monster is getting closer to them.”
Vince let Jess and Mike in. They were talking about Mike’s other friends and what happened when they arrived. And why they came to the forest.
Vince: “I see. So you need the weapon, right?”
Mike: “Yep. Though I wouldn’t ask that as it’s incredibly super radioactive. But if it can scare the monster away... Then it can die of it!”
Vince: “True fact, buddy.”
Vince went to a vault and was hiding the numbers by leaning very close to it. He typed in the code and opened another vault inside the first vault he opened. A box was laying there. Vince picked it up and gave it to Mike.
Vince: “You should only use it on the monster.”
Mike: “Hey, look. I’m insane, but not THAT insane.”
Mike took the box and opened it. A water gun with an iron bottle was laying inside it. Mike took the water gun and said to Jess that they were done. Then they returned to their friends. Well, if they could find them, that is.

Back to Jake, Zoe and Anna...

Anna was still crying of experiencing this. Her friend died by a horrifying monster. Zoe laid an arm over Anna and tried to calm her while they sat on a log. Jake was thinking and wondering when Mike and Jess will return.
Zoe: “But what actually made you react like that? I’ve never seen that from you before.”
Anna: “Zoe, I had feelings for him... And now he died... Who am I now if I’ve lost my crush because of a stupid monster...”
Zoe: “You’re a great person with... a lovely hobby. You deserve someone like Ryan. But your destiny only decided it’s not going to happen. And I know it’s tough to get over that, but you’ll have to...”
Zoe looked up at the sky. It wasn’t even close to getting morning. Zoe sighed.
Zoe: “It’ll be alright, Anna. It’s just hard to get over it.”
Anna: “I guess you’re right... *sniff* Alright... I feel better now...”
Zoe: “See?”
Anna: “Thanks, Zoe... You helped me a lot...”
Zoe: “No need to say thanks. I always help a friend in need.”
Anna went up and picked up her glasses, of which she laid next to her while crying. She put on her glasses again and was about to go to Jake.
Zoe: “Anna?”
Anna: “Yes?...”
Zoe: “I see an entire difference between you with glasses and you without glasses, to be honest. Can you show it to me?”
Anna put off her glasses. She didn’t knew why, but she actually had no time for this. Maybe because of her addiction... or that monster that is chasing them.
Zoe: “Wow... Jakey, can you please come?”
Jake heard Zoe and went to Zoe. He looked at Anna.
Jake: “Where are your glasses?”
Anna showed her glasses, of which she still held in her hands.
Zoe: “Am I allowed to say you look gorgeous without glasses, Anna? Because it’s true: You look beautiful without glasses!”
Jake: “Now that you mention it, Zoe. Anna looks... lovely! But I’ll still stay with you, don’t worry.”
Zoe: “Haha! You’d better do so!”
Anna: “Well... Thanks, guys... I really appreciate it...”
Jake: “You’re welcome.”
Zoe: “Do you actually need those glasses?”
Anna: “Well... I can’t read words very well from a fair distance, but... I still was told by experts to buy a pair of glasses...”
Jake: “If you want, you can take them with you but just keep them in... I don’t know... Your pocket? But without the glasses, maybe people find you more attractive.”
Anna looked at Jake with a confused face.
Jake: “Of course I don’t say you don’t look attractive with glasses. I just give an average on ‘more attractive’.”
Suddenly, some sounds from the bushes are heard. Anna and Zoe were scared.
Jake: “Stay here, I’ll look.”
Zoe held Jake’s arm.
Zoe: “Jake! No! It could be that monster and... I don’t want to lose you as well!”
???: “What monster?”
Zoe and Jake looked at the bushes. Mike and Jess were there.
Mike: “Finally found you guys. But... Where’s Ryan?”
The three were silent.
Mike: “Seriously, where is he?”
Jake: “He... died.”
Jess: “What?!”
Mike: “What!?”
Zoe: “He sacrificed himself... for us.”
Mike: “Oh no...”
Jess: “But... How...”
Anna: “I was a bit skeptical about that monster, but I’ve witnessed it now.”
Mike: “Wait, that monster killed Ryan?!”
Mike became mad.
Mike: “Grrrr, I will kill that beast right away!!”
Everyone followed him. They didn’t stop him.
Mike: “Wait, you guys... don’t stop me?”
Jess: “You got that weapon, so...”
Later on...
The five were searching for that monster. It was almost getting morning, according to Zoe’s watch. Wait... Her watch?
Zoe: “Guys, I think I know how to find him! Or her... Or... I don’t know... The monster.”
Everyone looked at Zoe.
Zoe: “My watch went faster each step the monster took closer to me! So if we notice my watch is going faster, then he’s close.”
Mike: “Apparently that monster can make analog watches go crazy... Geez... But okay, tell us what it says each minute.”
They were all silent. The sound of an owl was heard and a lot of crickets were making noises. After 12 minutes of Zoe telling the speed each minute, they still found nothing.”
Zoe: “1... 2... 3, 4... 5,6... Wait... It goes faster now.”
Mike: “Then we’re on the right path.”
Jess: “Wow, I never thought Zoe’s watch was a metal detector now... Or should I say: a ‘monster’ detector. Haha!”
???: “...hhhhh...”
Everyone heard a soft but echoing sound. It sounded like someone was breathing, but couldn’t.
Mike: “That’s him. That’s the monster.”
Jake: “What even happened to him?”
Zoe: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... It goes two times faster. Wow.”
Mike was making the water gun with radioactive stuff ready to use. He looked around. Suddenly, Jess yelled really loudly. Everyone looked at her and saw the same thing: The monster. Zoe’s watch went 4 times faster now. Mike dashed to the monster.
Mike: “For the love of my drowned sister, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!”
Mike held the water gun and aimed at the monster, while the monster was running to him. Mike sprayed the radioactive liquid over the monster and it began to yell.
???: “Yaaaaaaghh!!!”
Mike didn’t stop spraying the liquid over that monster until it couldn’t move anymore.
Mike: “You son of a (****), you’re really going to regret killing innocent people... Like my best friend Ryan.”
Mike sprayed some more over the monster, although the bottle was only 50% full. The monster started to fall on the ground and started to choke from the stuff. It swallowed some. Mike looked at it with an evil grin. Everyone else was taking a step back. One minute later, Mike was out of liquid. The monster laid on the ground and didn’t move.
Mike: “And this is for killing Ryan, who will rest in peace now...”
Mike removed and smashed the iron bottle against the monster’s head. It made a loud clanking sound. Mike went back to the others.
Mike: “I think I did it.”
Jake: “...”
Jess: “...”
Everyone was silent. They looked relieved, happy... They couldn’t decide what to say. Mike freed humanity from that monster. Jess ran to Mike and hugged him very, very tight.
Jess: “I didn’t thought you would made it!”
Mike hugged Jess too.
Mike: “Baby, I wouldn’t leave you... I never will. We’ll stay together until we die together... But hey, I’m still here. That monster was no match for me now.”
Everyone else went up to Mike as well.
Anna: “Congratulations.”
Mike: “Huh?”
Anna: “Uh... I do hope for you that you know what just happened...”
Mike: “Oh (****), I just saved the entire humanity... Am I going to be in the history books?!”
Jake: “I think not. I mean, who will believe us if we tell we killed a monster that threatened the entire planet?”
Mike: “Yeah, you got a point with that.”
Jess released Mike. They held each other’s hands. While doing so, they and the others went to their camping spot, packed their stuff and went home. They made a deal with each other: Only tell Philip about the entire situation.

Once they were home, they lived their life as usual: Jess had her job at the supermarket, Mike still was a rock music maker, Jake was working at the supermarket too... But Zoe had to rest after 6 months for the next 5 months. Because the baby was coming soon. And indeed, after 2 more months, Zoe gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She named her new child Kayla. Kayla looked a lot like her father Jake, but may have the personality of her mother Zoe. Zoe invited her parents and her friend to come. Not all at once, but first was her parents’ their turn. They went to the hospital to visit Zoe. Nathan bought some flowers for Zoe and Lily... nothing. But they bought those flowers together. The saddest thing was just that Nathan had to pay. Anyway, they came in.
Nathan: “Hey, Zoe!”
Lily: “Hi, sweetheart!”
Zoe: “Hi, mom! Hi, dad!”
Lily went to Zoe. She looked at Zoe with a big smile while sitting next to her.
Lily: “You’re doing so well now... I have my doubts about your independence now...”
Nathan was inspecting the outside world.
Lily: “Nathan, honey?”
Nathan: “Right. Sorry.”
Nathan went to Zoe. He put the flowers in a vase for her.
Nathan: “These are for you! We’ve bought them for you.”
Zoe: “Duh! Haha! Anyway, thanks! I really appreciate it!”
Kayla was asleep. She seemed pretty calm.
Nathan: “She’s very cute... Just like her mother.”
Zoe smiled at her parents. Suddenly, Nathan’s phone rang.
Nathan: “Oh, that’s the hospital I always need to go to. Be right back.”
Nathan left the room. Lily was talking with Zoe about what Zoe will do with Kayla. 5 minutes later, Nathan returned. He looked shocked.
Lily: “What’s wrong, honey?”
Zoe: “Dad? Did something happen?”
Kayla woke up and made some loud noises.
Nathan: “Well, my doctor found out... that I’m autistic.”
Lily: “Oh, really?”
Zoe tried to calm down Kayla and meanwhile, she said something.
Zoe: “Wait, then... If you’re autistic, then I can be so too and Kayla too. Right?”
Lily: “Well, you sure have a lot from your father.”
Nathan: “Speaking of the term ‘father’: Where’s Jake?”
Zoe: “He fainted while... Well...”
Nathan: “So he’s here... somewhere.”
Zoe: “Uh-huh. I don’t even know where he is.”
They were talking a bit about several of subjects. Then Zoe ‘s friends came to the hospital after her parents left. Anna didn’t quite care about children, but did it for Zoe. And Jess held Mike’s hand.
Jess: “Oh my god, Zoe! Your child!”
Zoe: “Haha! Hi, Jess!”
Jess: “Oh my god, she’s so cute. Wait, she’s a she, right?”
Zoe: “Yep. Her name is Kayla.”
Jess went to the chair that was next to the bed Zoe laid on. Jess sat on the chair and looked at Kayla.
Jess: “Zoe, I don’t know how this happened, but thanks to Kayla I like children more than before.”
Mike: “Ahem.”
Jess heard Mike saying that and was getting more serious.
Jess: “Oh, right. I’ve got something for you.”
Jess gave Zoe a box with clothes. It was a small box, but still: It’s a gift. Zoe was amazed.
Zoe: “Wow, guys... Thanks a lot!”
Mike: “Hey, listen. It wasn’t our idea... But Anna’s.”
Zoe: “Huh? Anna?”
Anna: “Yeah... As I couldn’t help people very well, I thought: Maybe I can do it now.”
Everyone was talking with each other short after that Jess gave the box with clothes. It was pretty cozy.

Back at the forest...

At 19:45 PM

It was getting dark, and the last visitors went out of the forest. Suddenly, a shade came across Vince’s house. Vince wasn’t home. The shade was breathing very heavily and on a difficult way. It couldn’t breathe at all, but still tried to do so. The shade opened the door of Vince’s house and was hiding there. Later on, Vince indeed returned home. Vince saw the shade in his house clearly: It had a huge bump on his back because of molten tentacles and half of his face has molten away. It had 8 fingers instead of 10. And there was a slight crack in his head. Vince had no doubts: This was the monster Mike killed earlier. But how in Earth’s name did it survive an overdose of radioactive liquids? Vince ran to his desk, where another water gun was waiting to be used. It had that radioactive stuff in it as well. Vince sprayed it over the monster, but it didn’t yell, let go getting hurt. Vince was thinking: Oh no! He’s immune for the only weapon available now! The monster dashed to Vince and attacked him by scratching him... As usual.

Note: If this story is too long, that's my mistake. I just wanted to clear another project faster, as i have too many things going on now. So if the word count is too high (Minus this message?) then i'm sorry. I'll try to make it shorter next time.
