Hello and welcome to my newest game guide, the Pokemon Red Major Battle Guide! Here, I'll be going over some good strategies on how to defeat gym leaders, elite four, and the champion of Pokemon Red. Now without further ado, let's get this started!

Gym Leader 1: Brock: Pewter City Gym Leader

Recommended Pokemon: Squirtle (if you chose it), Bulbasaur (If you chose it), Butterfree

Use only in case of emergency: Charmander

Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, uses rock type Pokemon. He has 2 Pokemon at his disposal: a level 12 Geodude and a level 14 Onix. If you chose either Squirtle or Bulbasaur as your starter, you should have no trouble taking down both of his Pokemon with Bubble (if using Squirtle), and Vine Whip (if you're using Bulbasaur). If you chose Charmander, then you're in for an extremely tough battle. If you don't have one already, I'd suggest getting a Caterpie or Metapod and evolve it to Butterfree specifically for this battle. Why would you want a Pokemon that's 4x weak to rock you ask? That's because of the fact that it learns the move confusion at level 12. It's easily the best special move at this point of the game, and it'll make taking down Geodude and Onix easy because of their low special stat. If your Butterfree goes down before you take out Onix, then switching to Charmander and using ember should be enough to bring it down. Even though fire's weak to rock, the STAB combined with Onix's low special defense should cause enough damage for you to get the win.

Gym Leader 2: Misty: Cerulean City Gym Leader

Recommended Pokemon: Pikachu, Clefable, Ivysaur (if you chose Bulbasaur as your starter)

Despite this only being the 2nd gym, I personally think that Misty is by far the toughest gym leader to beat in gen 1. A huge reason for that is her Starmie, which is level 21. Her level 18 Staryu can be taken down pretty easily with a thundershock from Pikachu. Her Starmie however is a whole other story. Starmie is by far the fastest Pokemon you've encountered at this point in the game, and it's special stat makes it's bubblebeam the most devastating attack that you'll deal with this early in the game. Misty can also give Starmie an X Defend, which makes dealing damage harder than it already is. If you haven't done this already, I'd recommend giving a moon stone to clefairy to evolve it into Clefable, because Clebable is the best tank that you can get this early in the game, so it should be able to take a few bubblebeams as long as it's leveled high enough. Use Mega Punch with Clefable a few times, and it should go down. You can also use Pikachu's Thundershock attack to do decent damage, but it's just not bulky enough to withstand enough bubblebeams to stay alive long enough to take it down. If you chose Ivysaur as your starter, a few vine whips should be enough to take down Starmie. It's bulky enough to take a few tackles or bubblebeams.

Gym Leader 3: Lt. Surge: Vermillion City Gym Leader

Recommended Pokemon: Dugtrio, Nidoking or Nidoqueen, Ivysaur

Lt. Surge isn't quite as tough as Misty in my opinion, but he can still be a pain to deal with if not prepared regardless. He has a level 21 Voltorb, a level 18 Pikachu, and a level 24 Raichu. After the leveling up you needed to do to take down Misty's Starmie and from the battles that took place between that battle and this battle, your Pokemon shouldn't have any problems taking down Surge's low leveled Pikachu and weak Voltorb. His Pikachu does know Thunder Wave however, so be sure to have paralyz heals ready for this battle. Raichu's the only Pokemon that poses any sort of threat to you. It's Thunderbolt is the single most powerful move you've had to deal with thus far. For this battle, you're either better off getting a Diglett and leveling it up to 26 so it can evolve into Dugtrio since it's ground type, or if you didn't use a moon stone on Clefable by now, use the one in your bag to evolve Nidorina/Nidorino into Nidoqueen/Nidoking. Since both are also part ground, meaning thunderbolt won't have any effect on either of them. Raichu would have to spam it's weak tackle attack, and you'll have an easy time destroying Lt. Surge. If you started with Bulbasaur as your starter and don't want a ground type on your team, then just use Ivysaur since electric type moves aren't very effective against grass types.

Gym Leader 4: Erika: Celadon City Gym Leader

Recommended Pokemon: Charmeleon (if you chose Charmander as your starter), Pidgeotto, on second thought make that any fire or flying type.

Next up is Erika, the grass type gym leader. Like Lt. Surge, she also has 3 Pokemon at her disposal. She has a level 29 Victreebel, a level 24 Tangela, and a level 29 Vileplume. Normally gym leaders save their strongest Pokemon until later on in the battle, but in this case Erika uses Victreebel first. It's easily the best offensive grass type in Kanto. Thankfully for this battle, you shouldn't have much trouble beating her if you chose Charmader as your starter (now Charmeleon). Also Pidgeotto would be another great Pokemon to use against Erika's team since she has grass types. Besides the status effect moves that Vileplume and Victreebel can use like poisonpowder and sleep powder, there's really nothing that should prevent you from having an easy win. This is definitely the easiest gym leader in the entire game.

Gym Leader 5: Koga: Fuchsia City Gym Leader

Recommended: Anything that's not weak to Poison

I was having a tough time whether I should put this gym leader next on the walkthrough of if I should put Sabrina since I usually take her on before I take on Sabrina, but I guess I'll go ahead and start with Koga. He has 4 poison types at his disposal. He has two level 37 Koffing's, a level 39 Muk, and a level 43 Weezing. His 2 Koffing's don't stand a chance against your party, however I would recommend taking them out in 1 hit due to the fact that they can use Smog, which even though it's a weak attack, it can easily poison your Pokemon. Also watch out for their smokescreen, which will lower your accuracy, which would be disastrous against the Koga's Muk. Unfortunately for you, his Muk can use double team. If Muk uses enough double teams, the battle will pretty much be based solely on luck since your attacks will likely miss a majority of the time. Take it out quickly with either a ground type like Nidoking, or if you don't have a ground type on your team, just use your strongest Pokemon. Be sure to keep as many of your Pokemon alive as possibly because his final Pokemon can end your chances of winning the battle. His final Pokemon is a level 43 Weezing, which has Smog, Sludge, Toxic, and Selfdestruct. If you're down to one Pokemon, the battle's pretty much over if he uses Selfdestruct. If you have multiple Pokemon, then use something that can withstand poison attacks. Toxic of course will badly poison your Pokemon if it doesn't miss. Smog and Sludge aren't quite as big of a deal to worry about, but sludge can do a decent amount of damage, so use anything that can withstand poison attacks in this fight, and you should win.

Gym Leader 6: Sabrina: Celadon City Gym Leader

Recommended Pokemon: Anything that can use Thunder Wave, Pokemon with high Physical attack

Now onto Sabrina! Like Koga, she has 4 Pokemon on her team. She has a level 38 Kadabra, a level 37 Mr. Mime, a level 38 Venomoth, and a level 42 Kadabra. Despite being the pre evolved form of Alakazam, Kadabra can still pack quite a punch. It's Psychic attack can do a ton of damage since it has a super high special stat despite not being fully evolved. Use a strong Physical move on it though and it should go down quickly. Mr. Mime is the weakest and lowest leveled of Sabrina's Pokemon, but it can be a pain to deal with regardless due to the fact it knows Barrier, which sharply raises it's low defense, as well as Light Screen which makes her Pokemon's Special Stat even higher than it already is for 5 turns. Using your best physical attacker against it to take it down quickly. Next up is Venemoth, which is the only Pokemon on any Kanto gym leader's team to not be the same type as the gym itself. This Bug Poison Type is best dealt with Charizard or Pidgeot. Finally, you have to take on her Alakazam, which is one of the toughest Pokemon you'll face in the whole game. With Psychic and Psybeam being is 2 attacks, while Reflect and Recover come together to make Alakazam arguably the biggest threat in the game. For this battle, if you have a Raichu that knows Thunder Wave, then use that move to Paralyze Alakazam so that it won't outspeed any of your Pokemon. After that, start your your strongest attacks that your Pokemon know so far. (For Raichu that would likely be Thunderbolt). As long as Alakazam's Paralyzed, you should be able to take down this powerhouse before it can wreck your team.

Gym leader 7: Blaine: Cinnabar Island Gym Leader

Recommended Pokemon: Gyarados, Blastoise, Nidoking, any other water or ground type

Blaine is around the same difficulty as Erika. Like the last 2 gym leaders I've went over, Blaine has 4 Pokemon: a level 42 Growlithe, a level 40 Ponyta, a level 42 Rapidash, and a level 47 Arcanine. His Growlithe and Ponyta are both pushovers that don't need to be gone over. His Rapidash is also pretty easy to take down, just use your Surf HM Pokemon to take it down. Arcanine is the only Pokemon on his team to worry about. Honestly though, it's not that hard to bring down, as long as you've got a decently leveled Water Type on your team. Just use a couple of surfs and it'll fall.

Gym Leader 8: Giovanni: Viridian City Gym Leader

Recommended Pokemon: Any Water Type Pokemon

Giovanni, the final gym leader has 5 Pokemon: A level 45 Rhyhorn, a level 42 Dugtrio, a level 44 Nidoqueen, a level 45 Nidoking, and a level 50 Rhydon. If you have a Blastoise on your team, you can sweep through this team just by using surf. In fact, any Pokemon using surf can be used to bring down Giovanni's team. As long as your team is level 45 or higher, you should have no problem beating Giovanni's team.

Now for the elite four, I'd recommend your team being around level 60 before battling them since the Champion's Pokemon are mostly in the 60's. As long as you do that, you won't need a strategy to bring down the elite four's Pokemon other than using Pokemon that have a type advantage over the elite four. I'll still list which Pokemon I recommend using for those battles, but I won't be listing any strategies since honestly, by this point, the elite four won't stand much of a chance against you.

Elite Four: Lorelei: Elite Four #1

Recommended Pokemon: Raichu to take out the water types, Charizard or any other fire type to take out Jynx

Lorelei is the first Elite Four member you'll face. She has 5 Pokemon as well: a level 54 Dewgong, a level 53 Cloyster, a level 54 Slowbro, a level 56 Jynx, and a level 56 Lapras.

Elite Four: Bruno: Elite Four #2

Recommended Pokemon: Any water or grass type to one hit KO those 2 Onix's, psychic or flying type to take out the fighting types. (Flying on Hitmonlee though since it has insanely low defense)

Bruno also has 5 Pokemon: a level 53 Onix, a level 55 Hitmonchan, a level 55 Hitmonlee, a level 56 Onix, and a level 58 Machamp.

Elite Four: Agatha: Elite Four #3

Recommended Pokemon: Any ground type Pokemon, any Pokemon with a high physical attack stat (the Gengar's and Haunters have very low defense), Raichu (to take out that Golbat)

Like the other Elite Four members, Agatha has 5 Pokemon at her disposal: a level 56 Gengar, a level 56 Golbat, a level 55 Haunter, a level 58 Arbok, and a level 60 Gengar.

Elite Four: Lance: Elite Four #4

Recommended Pokemon: Raichu (against Gyarados, Ice type against the Dragonairs and Dragonite, water type or Raichu against Aerodactyl.

Lance also has 5 Pokemon: a level 58 Gyarados, 2 level 56 Dragonair's, a level 60 Aerodactyl, and a level 62 Dragonite.

Champion Rival

Recommended Pokemon: ???

Your Rival who becomes champion has a full team of 6: a level 61 Pidgeot, a level 59 Alakazam, a level 61 Rhydon, a level 61 Exeggutor, a level 63 Gyarados, and a level 65 version of whichever fully evolved starter is stronger than yours. Against Pidgeot, I'd recommend using a Raichu because all of the attacks Pidgeot knows are flying type. Use a thunderbolt or 2 and it'll go down. As far as his Alakazam goes, it has the same moves as Sabrina's knows, so just use the same strategy as you did for her and it'll go down. His Rhydon is the easiest Pokemon to take down on his team because of it's 4x weakness to water. One surf and it'll go down. Exeggutor can be brought down pretty quickly with either a fire or flying type. Though it is 4x weak to bug, there aren't any strong bug type moves that existed back in gen 1, so you're better off using a Charizard's flamethrower or a Pidgeot's wing attack to bring down Exeggutor. All that's needed to bring down his Gyarados is a Raichu's thunderbolt. The 4x weakness to electric type moves makes bringing this Pokemon down very easy as long as you have either an electric type Pokemon or a powerful electric type move. Finally, if your rival is using a Blastoise or Charizard, just use Raichu's thunderbolt and the battle will be over. If he's using Venusaur, then use Pidgeot's wing attack a few times, and Venusaur will fall.

Great game guide ^^ also I choose charmander as a starter and the first gym was easy just level up charmander until it learns metal claw (at level 12 and or 14) and the gym is a cake walk.

The fact that you mentioned strategies that not many people would normally use in normal play is pretty commendable. I admire reading about people using a Clefable against Misty. The thought alone about it is pretty cool.

However, there are some errors in this guide. Brock's Onix is Lv 14 instead of 12, you named Butterfree Beautifly at one point, you said Koga has two Weezings, and so on. I'd suggest reading through your guides a couple of times and fish out the errors. But still, I liked reading this and read about different ways to play.

Divine Aurora : Thanks.

RunDST : Thanks for letting me know about those typos. I can't believe I missed those errors, especially when I accidentally said Beautifly instead of Butterfree. Clearly I need to do a better job of proofreading, because that was pretty ridiculous. I went ahead and fixed them (along with a few spelling errors I found on my own).
