I've played very little Earthbound, and I find newer Mario iterations to be very disappointing based on my experience with New Super Mario Bros., but I still have to pick Mario. The main reasons being that Mother doesn't interest me at all, but Mario has had some good games in the past, especially the spinoff games.

There isn't any comparison here aside from fun factor alone, and in light of that, Mario wins, but barely. Again, unless we count spinoffs in which case Mario runs away with this competition.
