Note: Spoilers for Undertale. I say this as if you don’t already know everything about Undertale going in.

Note: Also spoilers for Gravity Falls.

Undertale has truly asserted itself into the communities, but not because of the game itself, but the cosplayer fanfic people who go running around as Papyrus yelling SPAGHETTI! If you manage to get past that, Undertale does indeed have interesting gameplay, story, and puns. Oh GOD the puns THERE’S A FRICKEN TSUNDERPLANE!? Well on the topic of fanbases, I’ve been getting around, and came back to an old show I watched like 7 episodes of before I quit on television thanks to the Teen Titans “remake”. Gravity Falls. This show man… THIS SHOW. Maybe TV isn’t all bad with gems like this sprinkled in the pig pen, I’ll give it another shot.

*one Power Puff Girls reboot later*

Souls don’t exist T^T

In many ways, Gravity Falls is like the same as video game fanbases. Roleplayers, fanfic peeps, and best of all, the theories. AAAAAAHHHHHHHH THE THEORIES. >w< Umm, just ignore that… >3> Some of my favorite theories are the ones made before the shows finale, weirdpocalypse, because there was less evidence and more room for speculation. And a fan favorite that people speculate about is Bill Cipher, a being who has control over knowledge mortals cannot comprehend and who has great influence over people’s minds. Many theories surround him, over where he comes from, what goals he had, and why there seemed to be so much importance surrounding him. I saw a video from youtuber TREY the Explainer called “What is Bill Cipher? (scientific analysis)”. Be sure to check out that video if you really wanna comprehend this theory, watching that video gave me the backbone of this idea I have concerning an underlining theme in Undertale that goes unmentioned, but could be the answer to so many questions in the game.

A quick highlight on that Bill Cipher vid for what will soon come into play, Trey believed the “mindscape”, an alternate realm coexisting with our world that we can’t observe, was actually the 4th dimension, and that Bill was either an interdimensional being (coming from another dimension) or inter/extra-universal being (coming from outside the universe). Now who wants a lesson on spacial planes of existence?

There are three dimensions that are known to us, each determined by the alignment of nano-particles. A 1 dimensional plane is, roughly speaking, a line, the nanoparticles only have distance, going in only two directions, forward and back. A 2 dimensional plane is often imagined likened to images, as it is a flat world. The nanoparticles have height and width, meaning you could move with more freedom, but only in a sort of wheel of directions. Imagine walking in a perfectly flat field, and you move by sliding along the ground, unable to lift any part of your body. Now we exist in a 3 dimensional plane, with height, width, and depth. We can go up, down, left and right, forward, backwards, and everywhere in between. However, scientist speculate there is a fourth dimension, a plane of existence we can’t comprehend, going in width, height, depth, AND time. Now we aren’t sure what the fourth dimension will look like, but most models of a fourth dimensional object is a growing and contracting shape imploding on itself and even that isn’t even close to accurate. Wanna know what the fourth dimension operates like? Think of something you physically can’t think of. Have fun.

So what did Bill Cipher have to do with other dimensions? Well if he came from a higher dimension than ours, it means he would still abide by his own laws of physics rather than ours. Imagine it this way, the laws of physics in the second dimension are like a perfect piece of paper, with no depth, just height and width. You are a third dimensional person with your theory of relativity and all that jazz, but it isn’t anything like the rules of the second dimension. If somehow you were able to transfer into the second dimension, you wouldn’t adapt to follow the second dimensional rules, but rather you would bring your inconceivable third dimensional rules with you. This would essentially make you a god-like figure, able to alter reality. Like say that the second dimension could rip, and this would make a growing rift in the space of the dimension, you could be the one to poke a hole into the flat world with your three dimensional fingers. And what if there were people in this world? Well their minds would only be able to comprehend their own dimensional physics, so while you would be three dimensional, they perceive you as two dimensional, like them.

In the Bill Cipher theory, Trey said that this would be the reason Bill is a triangle, because we can’t perceive fourth dimensional objects. In truth, Bill is a shape that doesn’t exist in the third dimension, so we only see a triangle in its place because we don’t have the capacity to truly see it. All of Bill Ciphers powers, altering reality, conjuring objects, shapeshifting, teleporting, all-knowingness, it’s a result of being more of an observer than a resident. It’s like a sick game of Sim City, where Bill can alter our world and be a governing force. And after reading all this, I want you to stop and think about Undertale… and here’s where the fun begins.

Common knowledge within Undertales lore, souls, resetting, determination, sans and W.D. Gaster, they all seem to fit in with actual scientific theories and probabilities. In Undertale, the war on monsters and humans was all stemming from the fact that human souls are far superior to monster souls. Supposedly, if a monster could have a human soul, it would gain power beyond reckoning, and to prevent this the humans drove monsters away underground. Supposedly, it would take all the souls of every monster to match the power of a singular human soul, it’s that powerful. Now think back to our lesson on dimensional interloping, where something from another dimension can gain godlike powers upon entering a lesser dimension, JUST LIKE a human soul leaving a human body and entering a monster body. We know that monsters have a lesser composition than humans, their life force being all that holds them together and keeping them from dissolving away. And what about determination? Remember Alphys’ tests on monsters by injecting them with determination, causing them to lose their physical forms? Is all this a metaphor for a multi-dimensional affair?

And before you can even stomach that, let’s get to the art of saving and resetting. It seems like any old game mechanic, but Undertale (and to a lesser extent Animal Crossing) make a big deal of it. You can manipulate time to undo your actions and start anew, or can you? It is clear the reset system isn’t perfect in Undertale, as even after resetting, some evidence of previous save files leak into the game. This could be another metaphor for fourth dimensional forces at work, remember, the fourth dimension supposedly has time as a direction of movement, so time travel could definitely be possible for a fourth dimensional entity in a three dimensional plane. Yeah, fourth dimensional characters can time travel… let that sink in.

I believe the fourth dimensional equivalents in Undertale are whom we know as Chara, sans, and the Gaster gang, Gaster and his followers. First of all, we know sans has pretty astounding and unique powers, able to dodge hits in battle, teleport to other areas at will, and something that for a long while I’d written off as a design detail, bleed. Now I was fairly certain the bleeding was ketchup, but maybe this exposes his interdimensional nature. Also notable is Chara. What we know, or supposedly know, is that Chara was the first human to fall into the Underground, later hinted to be an attempt of suicide or the like. Chara was adopted into the Dreemur family, and Chara planned to poison his/herself in an attempt to free monsterkind. When Asriel took Charas soul and gained godlike power, he crossed the barrier, and was attacked by humans who believed he had killed Chara. Charas soul supposedly begged of Asriel to simply destroy the humans, but he simply returned to the underground and died of his injuries. Then Frisk appears later, and the events of Undertale take place. But what if I said that all along Chara was never the first child to begin with, and it had always been Frisk?

We never got much info on Frisk, what led Frisk to end up underground, and how Chara supposedly posseses Frisk in the genocide route. Well like I said, interdimensional beings can alter history, so Chara could easily have asserted him/herself into the lore of Undertale. Think of what Chara says when you complete the genocide route. The first time you complete genocide, Chara infers that whether you are Frisk or Chara in the beginning is determined in the end and it is up to interpretation. The SECOND time you finish genocide however, (that is if you have the mental issues to put yourself through genocide again) things get interesting. Chara says he/she is the demon that appears to people when they call their name. Chara says you have “perverted sentimentality” for repeatedly destroying the world and recreating it. Now this actually has greater significance to fourth dimensional beings, as it just so happens that interdimensional beings play a big part in Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s stories, y’know, the ones with cthulhu and what-not. In his stories, many of his monsters were from other dimensions, and many could also be summoned. Put two and two together (ALSO KNOWN AS FOUR), we can see what Chara is getting at.

The same goes for sans, remember the origin story of sans and papyrus? They appeared in Snowdin one day and asserted themselves into society. End of. Now I’m not sure who Papyrus might be, but it could be that sans came into this world from another dimension and rewrote reality to become just another resident, complete with a normal brother. But if sans comes from another dimension, shouldn’t he have god-like powers? Well he does, but assuming Chara comes from another dimension as well, it explains how we are able to beat sans in genocide. It also explains why sans’ beam cannons are called Gaster blasters, not because he stole Gaster’s research, but because Gaster ended up in sans’ dimension, and became associated with that world. Think about Gaster, supposedly the original royal scientist before falling into one of his machines and being erased from history, someone who is spread across time and space, who is always listening, who speaks in hands as he can hardly communicate to other-worlders now.

Anyways, that’s only the itinerary, but the more deeply you look, the more evidence you can find to support this theory of the backbone of what makes Undertale function the way it does. Hope you could wrap your head around all of this, I know I hardly could. X-X

Spoiler warning for the game Undertale.

I get what your saying about Undertale indeed.

There are tons of unanswered stuff from that game.

Sans being the most unique out of all the guys, and to tell the truth I don't think Sans is a skeleton, or if He is a skeleton then Papyrus isn't his brother that's for sure.

Towards the ending of Undertale you'll notice a Gap between Sans and Papyrus.  Now if they are "Brothers"  Then how come Papyrus doesn't know about the Sun, Yet Sans is the one to tell him about it.
I mean if their brothers in that sense,  Surely Papyrus wouldn't ask what the Sun is.

Sans isn't god like, I think he's a Scientist or Someone from the future.   During the sans fight he reveals this saying" Our reports have shown a Massive Gap in the Time-Space continum"  and continuing on telling you because he knows you can reset the game, he doesn't do much.

Clearly whatever Sans is, he's certainly not from the Underground.

Sans isn't the only person to break the 4th wall however,  Remember Flowey?  He also breaks the fourth wall because he knows you have His original Powers to reset the timeline as he once did.

So Clearly sans isn't the only one that 's different,  If Flowey is also apart of the Underground he shouldn't be able to know that you can reset.

"Do you think you are the only one with that power"
"The ability to Play GOD"
"The Ability to "Save""

Creepy stuff.

Another strange part of Undertale.. .is when Papyrus tells everyone that a "Little flower" Told him to bring everyone to Asgore to prevent the fight.   Dr Alpyh's  immediately freaked out.

I'll join in on the spoiler warnings.

SuperCrash64 :
Mecha Leo :

Well, to address the two of you, I've played Undertale, beaten Pacifist and a neutral run. And I have to agree that Sans and Papyrus really don't fit together as brothers at all. The hardest thing for me to theorize on this game is so much of the lore is left obscure on purpose so that we would have no easy answers.

It allows for tons of theories, but not necessarily tons of accuracy in speculation. Either way I think we can work with reason and figure a few things out fairly solidly.

Chara is pretty straightforward, you just have to have done the Pacifist run and read all of Alphy's lab entries and then done a Genocide run. And oh yes, she freaks out when Papyrus mentions a little talking flower. If that doesn't confirm that she knew what was going on then I don't know what will. She remembers Flowey. . .

I honestly don't buy the whole forth dimension thing. I mean, time is a unit of measurement- like inches. I doubt there is a time stream which can be manipulated and if there is. . . I think someone would have done it by now in a noticeable way. Then again only maybe.

Sans is kindof explained in the game too. I mean he is a scientist as you mentioned Super. Papyrus is the biggest mystery here. XD

Sword legion : What's interesting to me about Papyrus is that he has something unique on him..

If you look at the Starmans' chest emblem,  and then look at Papyrus, they are exactly the same.
Here take a look below for proof:

It's something note worthy and strange for sure. If Papyrus IS apart of the underground, then why does his chest emblem re-symbol a character from an entirely different franchise.

To tell the truth on Flowey..
I think Dr Alphy's is responsible for  Flowey happening..
Think once more back to the dialogue when your helping her with her Alamagates..
She says" Every subject I have turned into has failed..  A Monster cannot absorb Determination"
"But what If I input Determination to something that's neither Human or Monster?"

And since if you played Genocide:
Flowey tells you how he Brought himself to the verge of death, just to wake up again as if it were a bad dream...

Now here's the keypart that ties into Alphy's statement..
Flowey tells you it was because he was Determined to live.

Furthermore Flowey is the only subject in underground that qualifies as neither human or monster.    It maybe sound a little bit stretched, but for a theory on Flowey's existence it ties together.

At least we know Toby Fox is an Uber troll for that Dog in the game lol.
