I have been home schooled for 5 years now and it was always great until recently this year my teachers stopped opening work and haven't been emailing me or nothing. This week they remembered this and are trying to push me though the grade fast now but that's just my exp with it.

I was homeschooled in third grade, around when I was 12-13 years old. I feel like, if I was going to be homeschooled, I would have wanted it to have happened when I was younger. Staying with your parents all day seems great as a child but I missed out on bonding with people I would know for 3-5 more years, while they were picking who they wanted to be close with. I feel a lot of my social anxiety stems from that year of my life being homeschooled: I feel like networking and creating bonds form and happen during third grade. I don't know why I just feel like I missed something integral. That said, I would have loved to have spent a great deal of time with my parents earlier in life. Especially considering now; now that they are divorced.

geeogree : He or she really said parents don't love their kids? I mean, if you're already against public schooling, then I can see where you interpret something a certain way.

I could see a principal saying parents aren't as engaged or as involved in their kids' lives and they should take a stronger, more active role in the education process as well as the day to day experiences of their kids, but I find it hard to believe a principal would say parents don't 'love' their kids.

But you were there. I was not. So I'm taking your word for it.

My two thoughts are as follows, and this is with me having two kids who are not yet in the school system.

1. Our kids are going to learn at school but we're going to be teaching them, reading to them, talking to them and helping them interpret the every day lessons they see in the real world as well as the schools. They're already 'home schooled' because we involve ourselves in their education. And the good teachers are the ones that teach the tougher classes and the higher levels of education. You can't always provide excellent teachers for your kids but you also can't provide excellent managers, leaders, bosses, friends, etc. What are you teaching them if you say you can just do it on your own if you don't like what is being offered? I wonder what the long term ramifications are.

2. I know you said the socializing is a myth with homeschool vs. public/private/charter school kids but there are so many lessons learned by interacting with kids you don't like so much. Your kids learn negotiation, emotion management, and other skills that come with interacting in a large group of people.

Are they involved in any other programs, like Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sports teams, etc?

And ultimately, kids can go to good or bad schools but their drive and their parents' involvement are what develop them intellectually and put them in a good position post high school age.

Good for you for making a decision and acting. That's outstanding. I look forward to hearing what the experience is like the next few years.

First off, what that principal said about parents not loving their kids is complete and utter BS. Sorry for the language if that bothers anyone, but I'm glad you took your kids out of that school, if that's what the principal said. I mean, I know for a fact that my parents love me. They say that everyday, and even my mom who's... not the best mom to say the least, loves me.

For all of my schooling years I've been at a public school, and usually what's seen to be the worst option in the district :p. My elementary years I was in a school that was seen as the second worse school to go to in that district because the kids came out as really rude, defiant, etc. I came out as pretty much the smartest kid at that school... then I went to the middle school that's seen as the "ghetto school" and I saw why, (the school was pretty much falling apart, and some of the kids were just AWFUL), but I honestly loved the kids I became friends with and the teachers I had. Now that I think about it, pretty much every teacher I had really liked me :p.

Whenever I decide to research something online, which isn't very often mind you because I'm sorta lazy (good thing I learn things very quickly :p), I found out that I'm able to learn a lot more and a lot more quickly than at school. And the social skills I had (which were really awful) didn't really improve when I went through public school... it only really got better when I started interacting with people on the internet (ironically enough). Also at school I noticed that some real life situations were spun and the kids were only taught one point of view instead of both or letting the kids decide. This isn't with all of the situations but it happened enough to make me wary of what I was being taught in the future.

If I could I would get homeschooled right now, but my mom hates the idea... and I miss having human interaction with people my age during the summer... and the high school I might be going to has this program that could get me a 2 year college degree when I graduate high school. Which is pretty exciting :3.

Congratulations! Your kids will now actually be able to talk to people outside the few people in their grade at their school.

At least that's what I gather from my experiences of public schooled people as opposed to homeschooled people. I for one have always been homeschooled. It's been alright. I mean, I've been ahead of kids in my same grade. Don't worry too much about the socialization issue, that's more of something mindlessly repeated by people than any real fact. I wish that real life meme would die.
But yeah, this way, you can actually put your kids in a learning environment that actually cares about them. And not doing as little as possible, and listening to charts and higher ups instead of doing what is right, or actually putting any effort into teaching.

This is wonderful news honestly.

That principal sounds like a real tool. I could probably understand why he said that, after witnessing kids being poorly groomed, having bad manners, and the general stupidity. But who do he think he is? Mr. 'I know everything, but my job at an elementary school keeps me humble'? I am glad the child was removed from such a school and many of the users expressed my concerns with home schooling. I am glad that your kid gets to be around other kids and that does help with their social skills. Just make sure to teach them some non-common core stuff.teach them some practical things and some common sense.
