So today I took the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). It's basically a high school test to see if your English skills are at "where they should be". This means a bunch of random questions are asked and you have to answer them with EXACTLY the right formatting and limitations. Answered a question with four spaces provided with four and a quarter lines of an answer? Zero for that question. It's absurd because the only way you can fail is if you don't fill the space in exactly while also indenting paragraphs and double-spacing. But if you don't you have to retake it.....next year. You must pass to graduate high school. At least we got a computer if we asked.

In Ontario we also have the EQAO, which we take in grades 3, 6, 9. However, it doesn't count for marks and unlike the OSSLT, is not required for graduation (passing, that is).

Do you guys have such tests in your countries/subdivision? How were they? What's your opinion on them?

We had a bunch of tests here through middle school and high school and a lot of them were pretty easy. In middle school there were basic tests for each main subject and for each subject in high school, if you passed the class and got the credits but didnt pass enough tests you couldn't graduate.

Yea, I grew up in Ohio, and we had the same type of tests throughout school. We did one a year for each grade starting in Middle School (4th Grade though 10th.) I think they were called Ohio Schools Standardized Tests (OSST).
But like you said they were all super easy. I mean you had to be completely ignorant to fail them. The scores were set up like the SAT's where you got a score out of so many points, and they let you know what percentile you were in. I always liked taking tests in school because more often than not, I would set the curve for the class XD

Every school has their own variant. I think mine took place in 4th,8th,and 11th grades. Now most were multiple choice and you could only fail if you did not pay attention at all the whole year. The only reasons they exist is to measure the kids' learning and to determine if that school should stay open and federal dollars.

IStillSeeTheX : Yes, I have tests similar to this. We had to take a Standardized Test every year from 1st grade to 7th grade (although they changed it to 3rd grade now). They have a different test now which has a free response portion as well. I don't know what kind of test we will have this year, but I hope it doesn't have free response questions like last year. I actually like the multiple choice tests, as they are easier, less time-consuming, and less stressful.

Our standardized tests where I live are similar to yours with the fact that if you use more space than provided, you get points taken away. It's scored by a computer program so it only grades what is in that space. :/

The standardized tests in my area used to be somewhat easy. However, ever since we had to switch over to a different type of test by a different company, they have become really hard. In my opinion, they aren't too bad because they're short, but they should make the questions at least a little bit easier so more people can pass them.

In America, and in Georgia, there are more standardized tests than kids going to the schools.

And I'm being honest, we are testing all the time. We have statewide tests, nationwide tests, countywide tests, tests tests tests.

Many of our tests count for NOTHING Exocet to gauge our learning, which makes no difference, and other tests can count for upwards of 20% of our final grades (end of course tests). We also have tests that count for our teachers pay checks (which we think about when taking, based on how good the teacher is). We have maybe 8-10 testing days a year, full days, but they're spread out. However at the end of the year, we have shout 5 straight days of taking our tests

That is weird, I have never heard of a test like that much less one that strict. I would most certainly fail that test, which is why I'm afraid if I get it in my school. Though since I've never heard of it then perhaps my school doesn't have it, which is a huge relief.

Recently our state has issued our final exams as half a portion of a test online that is written and the other half multiple choice as written but as much as I hoped it wouldn't become mandatory it seems it has.
The school's Internet is already slow what makes them think it can handle giving out online tests to a thousand students at the same time?
Thank goodness our standardized test is still written.

Standardized tests are just ridiculous. I understand WHY they are there, but they are still the most annoying thing of the year.

I'm glad that you brought this up. Last year (although I can't find it), there was a big standardized test discussion last year, especially with the introduction of the PARCC test. It was actually pretty popular, with over 20 states and Washington, DC using the test along with the Common Core educational standards. There were many opt-outs, though, especially in states like New Jersey and Colorado. Now, however, the test is becoming less popular and actually just had a technical issue on Wednesday, which lead to no students taking the PARCC in the entire state that day. I don't think that there's any state that doesn't have a standardized test, but trust me, I don't think that the PARCC will last too long. There's a lot more PARCC practice than actual learning (especially during this time of year) and I'm really starting to get sick of it. I heard that the Smarter Balanced tests are much better than PARCC, but in the end, standardized tests just don't need to be in place. Yes, I can see that it tests if a school is doing well, but why don't we just have some standards and use report card (without any extra credit) and just go from there? Teachers and parents have both voiced their opinion on the PARCC along with the students. Trust me, I don't think that most people like the test. It is a pain in the neck and we just don't need it. I am taking the PARCC throughout all of next week, and I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck.
