Like the title says, I might soon be getting a real job, my first one ever. I have had 4 summer jobs before that were either school or government given, but never a real one and today I got a call from 7-11 asking about my application and if I still want to work there so I said yes and I'm meeting them tomorrow.

The thing is... I gave in my application exactly 13 months ago, on January 8th 2015. Getting the app was pretty cool too because I went to see a movie for my birthday and I went to 7-11 after that at like 11 PM and while this guy's making my food he just says. "Yo, you wanna work here?" and gives me an app.

They had the app for 13 months before they called me. Wow.

The job does have some drawbacks though because it's a night job, I believe it's from 11 PM until 7 AM, and I'm fine with that, especially now because even with minimum wage and breaks, I'm looking at a minimum at $70+ per day.

Once school starts things will get really tough though because my school is 3 hours away, thats 6 hours a day of just travelling and my classes vary between like 2 PM and 8 PM, so if I have both on the same day, I would literally get no more than 3 hours of sleep if I can even go home.

As for what I will be doing, they said it's to run the oven.

Well, I was offered the job but I had to reject it even though I really wanted it. They had like 20 people apply and I was the only one they called in and were ready to hire me but if I took the job I would have had to drop out of school and find a new place to live right away. Plus, I would go 3 or 4 days in a row without sleeping or even being at my place so there's no way I would have been able to do that.

Dang, that's unfortunate that you had to turn the offer down. I think you made a good decision as that job might not be worth staying up for several days in a row without being able to go home. However, I think you can take a lot of confidence from this as you were the only one they selected out of the 20 applicants, so they must have seen something in you. I hope you can translate that into future job applications/ interviews.

RDay13 : It would have been a lot better if I could have worked during the weekend, that would have been awesome. I would have been able to work during the month until school starts in march full time, and then once school started I could have gone to weekend but I couldn't do that because they already have someone for the weekend. I wanted to do Thursday night, Friday night, and Saturday night.

You really should have seen if they could accommodate your schedule, being a student and all. But if the place is 3 hours away, that is not worth it,considering a good chunk of your paycheck with be in your gas tank. Not to mention wear and tear on your car. And the fact that you will be tired when you get out of the store, that is just an accident waiting to happen.

Good decision. As Oldschool said a lot of your money will be wasted on traveling back and forth and 3 or 4 days with no sleep! Geez and I thought my mum doing 3 night shifts in a row was tough.

I read the first post, got all excited, scrolled down to reply... when RDay's response caught my eye.  I felt really confused, and then was finally smart enough to realize the second post was yours also.  Only THEN did I look at the date and see that someone simply revived this thread. haha.

I guess there's no point in congratulating you any more, but .... why would you consider your other jobs 'not real'?  Even if they were short-lived, were you not earning a paycheck and showing up at assigned times? Sounds like a job to me!

I am also SHOCKED that they held your application for 13 months before calling you. I didn't know ANY business would do that, and I'd feel quite confused if I had been in your position.

Why are you driving three hours to work one way instead of moving closer to your school?  :O That seems like SUCH a waste of time!  That will be tiring and stressful, since it will also cost an arm and a leg.

Oldschool777 : The job is like 20 minutes away from where I live, but its like 150 minutes away from where I would be coming from, and i don't use gas either, that's too expensive so I use two buses and two trains. I would get out of the store at 7 AM and need to be at the place that's 3 hours away at 12.

Singelli : I don't have a house closer to school, so I can't move closer, also sometimes I walked there so its cool.

wow, yeah that is bad but school comes first and in the long run education is always important. I had to turn a job done myself years ago because it would have required me to drop out of college. I eventually found a job that was easier on my schedule. So my advice would be to keep looking. I will pray for you that you find a job that allows you go to school and work
