 I will be awfully sorry to disappoint you boys but the rule seems to be that only the highest form of evolution can shift into Mega evolved form during a battle. Pikachu and Rattata will not be getting Mega evolved forms. Raichu and Raticate just might. Let us pray.

 The rule also seems to be that they shift back to normal form when the battle is over. Sort of like a Digimon, except the Mega Pokémon only devolves down to its Ultimate form. Yes. The last permanent evolution of a Pokémon would be its ultimate form. Ultimate is by definition "final".

Postman3 : I never saw Butterfree as Beedrill's bug rival since their final bug forms are too different I always pictured Venomoth as Butterfree's rival since in real life butterflies and moths are often mistaken for each other because they look so similar so it only makes sense to me that those two would be bug rivals to each other though I agree both Butterfree and Venomoth deserve mega evolutions

I'm sorta glad that the bug Pokemon with a 3 way rival system each got a mega form Pinsir, Heracross, and Syther/Scizor though since they all got one I see mass deforestation happening every time they feud over territory @.@

and if anyone is nowz Beedrill's bug rival they added it later on by making Vespaquen the other bee pokemon I can actually picture how the fighting between them would start too each of them sees the same tree as a perfect place to build their hive but only one can be the leader so a fight starts and Beedrill goes mega to keep up with Vespaquen's slightly better stats and soon they bring in lots of combee and weedle into the fight until one of them backs off and the other is victorious

and poor wurmple has it's own evolutions as bug rivals Dustox and Beautifly must fight all the time for territory and since wurmple is both of their starter evolution it must choose whose side to be on or hide every time a fight breaks out

Sandslash, Golduck, Dewgong, Luxray, Lapras and Mightyena. Or perhaps every final evolution should be mega...

I honestly think a lot of Unova Pokemon deserve some mega Evolutions.. Audino isn't all too great.
