I am surprised no one started the thread yet.

Anyway, the 2016 Academy Award nominees were revealed this morning, although the attention was understandably elsewhere : http://oscar.go.com/nominees

I have not seen many of these movies so I can not make a clear comparison. Spotlight had good acting, no doubt, and may earn something for the support. However as a movie it was inferior to The Martian.

And as I predicted Star Wars got nominated for technical Oscars (sound and visual effects) and best original score. I doubt that the latter will win; I find the score inferior to the original trilogy.

What are your predictions?

I was going to actually, I already made my list on Twitter and guess what? DiCaprio isn't going to win. Nah, his performance was great, he has to win best actor this time.

Best picture will be either the Martian or the revenant.

As always (?) some people are complaining about the lack of diversity in the nominations. Since I am not an avid movie goer, I can not tell if they are right or wrong. So, have there been "non White" performances that have been omitted by the Academy?

I hate these sorts of award shows. Let's celebrate movies by having awards for movies that have already made a bunch of money.

I dunno, it all seems way too political. A lot of the time it seems like either the winner was so obvious that no one else stood a chance or the choice is so idiotic that no one understands why the decision was made.

Also, I saw the complaint about too many white people getting picked for awards. Not sure if there is real discrimination or if minorities simply aren't very well represented in movie making or what.

geeogree : *seems*? You are too diplomatic my friend . Such ceremonies ALWAYS turn political, with super rich actors complaining about inequality and not doing anything (well, not much) about it. Unless you participated in a political movie (Milk, Schindler's List), please shut up and act.

As for discrimination: where do we draw the line? Must one-legged, one-eyed, blue-haired transgender black male be represented no matter what too?

That's how I feel though. Just because there are non-white people in Hollywood doesn't mean they automatically should get recognition. However, you'll get people who think that because 5 white people got picked for best actor means that the handful of black actors who had leading roles in the last year were totally overlooked.

Again, these "awards" are so arbitrary that I fail to see why fans care so much. I don't see winning an Oscar as "making it" in Hollywood. I'd rather make successful movies than get awards.

geeogree : we are on the same page, once again. I remember a news article in the 1990s comparing the Oscar winners and box office hits. They are usually VERY discordant, with few exceptions (Titanic, Forrest Gump).

Anyway, there is now an "official" call for boycott I saw on the Today show this morning (at the gym, so I did not hear it).
