The Oculus Rift will be sold to the public within the next two to three months but if you want to get your hands on a PlayStation VR, you might have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on one as the system is expected to be released any time between now and July. That's good actually because at least bow there is an idea that it could be released in the very near future instead of guessing between years.

There is now a general idea on the games that will be on the VR, as there are currently more than 100 games in development, which is a lot for a launching console, especially for a Sony one. As for a price, some sources said the VR would be cheaper than the Rift which stands at $600, but new leaks suggest the price could actually be a bit higher.

Thoughts?

I am kinda interested in this technology, but won't the PSVR only work on Playstation?
It might be worthwhile to get the Rift just cuz the PC has a lot more games and will most likely get more support.

I'm defenitely not going to have the money for this virtual reality stuff anytime soon. But if the Playstation virtual reality set is cheaper than the Oculus Rift then I'll get that. Again, I won't have the money for any of them anytime soon, but perhaps after college. Who am I kidding, after I finish college these things will be about 10 years old....

I am interested in all this VR stuff, but they're pushing it too far. Nobody with a bit of common sense would buy an add-on that costs double than the console itself, no matter how incredible the gaming experience is. And of course, I wouldn't get a VR set that isn't compatible with the two consoles I have, simply because it's not worth it.

Let's see how this thing evolves through time. As it stands, it's a big and clumsy object. I hope they plan on releasing a slim version soon, or at least something that can be used in small spaces, because not everyone has a wide room for videogames.

Vanelan : Well, you can't just play any PC game. Just like how playstation is developing 100 VR games, they have to develop specific games that can play on the rift, and I don't think they even have more than like 30 games right now.

Vanelan : VR will be also. They're still going to need a lot of time to make them, plus not all rift games will be able to be played without it.

I have a question. Will the games featured with virtual reality capability be delivered digitally. I imagine so, as that seems to be the easiest way to do it. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I'm just making sure.

LunarDarkness2 : I think the games will be discs. Why would you have to connect the VR to a console if you just download the games? If you download the games, then it would just be its own console that plugs right into the TV.

zanderlex :

I meant for the PC. You could just plug in the headset into the computer and play a game that supports virtual reality functions. I should have been more specific, sorry.

zanderlex : I totally did.

Honestly I don't think VR of any kind will ever really catch on. These guys are wasting time and money, especially since they'll need to charge a full console price for it. It's an add on and let's face it: add ons have a HORRIBLE history in gaming. They always flop because people figure they can play great games on what they have, or they can pay a bunch of extra money and play the same great games and a handful of other games. Now if anybody can really pull it off between Rift and PSVR, I think it'll be PSVR because everyone who owns a PS4 can run PSVR, but the guy that was behind Rift said the other day that "the Rft and a PC with the recommended specs will be far more powerful than the PSVR". Well first of all that was completely uncalled for and unprofessional, but whatever. Lol The point being that he specified you needed the recommended specs...that should be a given, so why specify that? Because not everyone who games on their PC can afford a PC powerful enough to meet the Rift's recommended specs and enter lag and other issues. Also PSVR has a huge lineup already.

However, I think they will both fail and I think this for a few reasons, namely install base. Let's look at the Wii U for a great example: it failed. Why? Sure the specs were one of the main issues, but the real issue is that the install base isn't big enough to make up for the cost of developing for it. Developers won't develop for it because they can't make enough money to justify what they spend to make a game or cut it down enough to make it run on the Wii U. Now if it had 40,000,000 people that played on it the devs would forget about the tech restrictions and work like mad for games on it.
Same issue with PSVR: say you were a console game Dev. Would you make a game fora system with an install base of three million or a console with an install base of forty million? No brainer. Now when developing for the PS4 you have 40,000,000 potential customers. But instead you could develop for PSVR and it's 1.2 million install base (if they do as well as many hope). Why lose all of that potential money on a new add on game? Bad idea for any AAA Dev.
Rift will be the same: how many people play on Steam? How many of them do so because they want to game but they figure why not use their PC instead of buying a new PC with higher specs or a new console? And how many of those will want to throw down $600 on a new peripheral to enable them to play a small collection of games when they already have a ton of great games at their disposal with no additional cost beyond that of the games?

In short, I say not enough people will adopt these things and as a result not enough devs will make more than one or two games for it. Thus they will die in less than one co sole generation.

Eirinn : :C I don't have the recommended specs. *sobs*

I guess you would say the same for the other VR systems that are coming out as well, right?

I feel it will eventually pick up, but only after more games are added, and then more people might start checking it out, which in turn would let more developers develop.

Yeah, all VR at this point is out of the question I think. I will admit though that every new form of entertainment is scoffed at and dismissed initially, so I may very well be proven wrong yet. I do still expect it to fail at least for now. Maybe one day it will work.
