A discussion started in chat today. I'm not answering how it started, because that would be revealing private info about somebody. It turned into a discussion pertaining to this -

Me - If you have a drunk mother yelling hurtful things at you, you should probably call the cops before the situation gets worse.

Everyone else in chat - You shouldn't call the cops, calling the cops would make things worse.

That's the premise of the discussion. The person who we based the discussion off of was under 18 years of age, so it's child abuse. I'd like to know what other people think about this. Do you think that calling the cops would help the situation be resolved? After all, the police are there to help people. I don't understand how people see to not call the police. Discuss.

Let me get this straight:

Your mother has some drinks, and starts making fun of you at a high volume, and you think you should call the police over that?

I can see the phone call now:

** 911, what is your location?

** I'm at my mom's house, she's yelling at me

** Is she wielding a weapon, sir?

** No, but she called me fat, really loudly

** Is she threatening to kill you, sir.  Does she look like she's going for a weapon?

** No, but she said some hurtful things and that's child abuse

** Sir, call us back if you're going to get killed.  We have actual crime to deal with.

Ghostbear1111 :

When people are drunk, anything can happen. That is just what happened to the person in chat that this discussion started off of. I said to be sure of preventing the situation of getting worse, such as she may get a weapon, you should call the police. Being drunk while you have your kid around just shows that you're not responsible enough to be taking care of one, anyways.

LunarDarkness2 : Here's the problem, though: Just because someone's drunk doesn't mean something will happen.  It might, sure, but an airplane might crash into my house since I live near an airport.  There aren't fire trucks sitting next to my house waiting for that to happen.  The same goes for that event.  If something really happens, that kid needs to find a quiet spot and call the police on their cell phone.... if something happens.

The cops will come out, assess no damage has been done, and leave.  Or, in reality, they can't actually enter the home without permission if they don't decide violence is occurring.  There are rules and laws.

How, honestly, do you see this ending.  Cops come in and hang out until the parent passes out or goes to bed?  Walk me through what really happens.  I'm curious.
