Right now, Kobe Bryant has the 3rd most points in NBA history, just about 4000 behind 2nd place and 6000 behind the record, but how close can he get? He has only played a half season worth of games in the last 2 years in which h he only scored 800 points. This is going to be the final year of his extension, but numerous questions surround it.

Will he even be able to finish the season at all? Will he finish the season and call it quits? Can he finish the season well enough to warrant another year or two? What do you think will happen?

I think it would be cool to see how close he can get. As long as he stays healthy, even if it means slightly decreased playing time and stats, he could probably go on for a little while longer and put up some good numbers.

Considering that even in his BEST seasons he only scored just over 2800 points (most of his seasons were somewhere between 2k and 2500) I really doubt he will break Kareems record. Heck even to pass Malone at #2 he's going to have to have a couple seasons that were near the top of his game.

Due to his injury history the past couple seasons I really doubt that he can make it. He had a great career though.

yeah, I'm on board with Jordan - he'll never make it.

I just looked up who was at the top of that list and it hurt a little to see Kobe ahead of Jordan. That just seems wrong to me. That was until I realized that Kobe played 200 more games than Jordan. If Jordan had played all the way through the 90's he would easily be ahead of Kobe and possibly close to the #1 or #2 positions. Maybe just #2.

Still, there is no way with the condition Kobe has been in the last few seasons that he has enough in the tank to score over 4000 points. Even with 3 seasons to do it I doubt he would play enough.

Well it has now been announced a few days ago that Kobe is in fact playing his last season in the NBA. As I had predicted before, his body is just shutting down on him. Since he's around my age and been playing in the NBA since he was 18, I'm not surprised. He will go down as one of the top 10 players in NBA history. Although I personally was not a direct fan of his, you gotta respect what he did on the court. He is one of the last old-school NBA players that took pride in his game NOT ONLY ON OFFENSE but also on DEFENSE.

Since he won't reach the record. I'll go ahead and close this thread. Further discussion about Kobe and his season can be made in the NBA season thread.
