I need some advice on whether or not I should go to school. Sounds simple, but it's not.


Tomorrow I have lab and English, but I'm still not feeling well enough to even think. I already told a kid in my English class yesterday that I wasn't coming in tomorrow because I knew I wouldn't make it, but now I'm having second thoughts because of lab.

I already missed lab once and missing a 2nd would be about 10% of my total lab hours. All we do in lab is fill out our books with answers, but the answers are given out in class. Should I ask next week if I could take some time out of the day to do them there or should I fight and try to go in tomorrow and risk passing out or something?

zanderlex : Well in my family work seems to be the priority for helping the family financially, so I would say that you should go to school, but if you feel like you are going to die then skip it or ask the teacher if he or she excuses absences of sick and doctor appointments. I heard if it is a really urgent matter upon your health then the teacher should excuse the absence.

I rather hate to sandwich post but if you know you have a disease, then wither get the help you need, or just deal with it! Sit pretty, and wait out the icky, even if it means you can't go to school. Again, I go to the point of looking out for number one. That's you man. If not me, then many a person on this site and in real life care about you more than enough to see you suffering. REST, RELAX, and take care of yourself so you get better! Even if it means you're just half awake slumming online with your friends! You need to take care of you and if you're applying the brain full power and body? You can't do that. best to let at lest one take the day off buddy. Body needs rest if not brain or both.

zanderlex : Are you in one of those classes that takes your absence and uses your absences as a whole different penalty to go to class in that class? In other words, is it one of those classes that take a penalty maybe 5% of your grade every time you are absent for class? I have been in one of those classes and made it a rule to never skip those classes even if you are sick which for me I never really that sick to have to skip classes. Is your lab class a typing class and are you in high school 0_o or in college?

happiness7 : Well, if you miss 6 hours of class, you automatically fail. I haven't hit anywhere near that yet, but its a lab, not an actual class, so each lab is like an exam for the regular science class, and if you don't pass lab, you automatically fail science also. The problem isn't missing it though, the problem is making it up.

Now you mentioned that you have told your classmates about you not being able to make it to English class, but I really recommend that you inform the professor yourself. I have been through school so I will give you some advice that worked for me. First of all Lab is important I would talk to my instructor. When I was sick I worked it out with my instructor. She let me go to lab so I would not miss  my lab points. Lab accounted for 20% of our grade so I did not want to miss that. After lab she let me go home, and told me she would send the notes and class lesson to me, which she did. I also had a similar incident with another instructor. I was going to have surgery so he let me attend his other lab class for our class. I still got my lab points.

That's because people in the same earth science class might have different labs, but if there were labs on different days, then someone could just copy notes from someone who had the lab already and then not go to their own lab.

zanderlex : In my college labs, I have to be present that day and (lecture and lab) are both on different days and with different or same teachers, like the lecture is meeting different times of each other even if they are the same teacher and different teachers too. Then the lab is only one day of the week and just being present in the class of the time of the lab that they get full points for doing labs and notes.

zanderlex : If you can't meet the professor in person then how about emailing the professor? They usually give their contact information on the syllabus. The reason why I say to tell the professor is so that your professor will understand your situation and can try to work things out.

I think that if you are so sick that you feel you can't focus anyways, that you should probably just stay home and focus on getting better. Would seem like a waste of time just to show up, be miserable and not focused anyways.

Aside from that, I think if you are sick in a contagious way that your classmates would appreciate you staying home as to not chance getting them sick.
