Unless one is over 40, most people here have been hammered, over and over again, that fat (especially saturated) is bad.  Responding to these incentives, businesses started making weird concoctions in order to keep the same textures like corn and canola oil, hydrogenated fats, sugar and unpronounceable ingredients...

But now, people are slowly realizing that the "science" behind these advices had more to do with policy than with facts. The latest realization came on the milk side, when people started questioning whether demonizing whole milk (3.25 percent fat) was a mistake https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/10/07/whole-milk-is-okay-butter-and-eggs-too-whats-next-bacon/

This is the latest of a long series of government blunders in the food sector. This proves one of my life philosophy: do the opposite of what government tells you. Government says you should not eat fat? Then DO eat fat!

Ever since I watched Fathead (and I read my exercise book, which had a part on nutrition) I realized I had it all wrong when it came to nutrition. I was following government "advice" on nutrition by eating low fat and lots of grains (about 10 servings per day) and I was also moving a lot. And yet I kept gaining fat weight and had a belly. Now that I have adopted (more or less) the "paleo" diet - lots of fat, no grain or legumes, a few fruits and /  starchy veggies - I have never been better. I am older than my waist size (which stands at 29-30, depending on what I wear), I have more energy and... food tastes better!

Indeed, try drinking 2 percent (or 3.25) milk, and then drink 1 percent or skim milk. It tastes like water, does it not? Hell, I even drink coffee cream and whipping cream when I have the occasion! I also put butter in my coffee; it is pure cream, really...

Going back to government "science": it can prove to be lethal. Indeed more and more studies are coming out saying that the cholesterol hysteria is causing people to ingest more statins (like Crestor), which may in turn cause even more damage to the body: http://watchdog.org/206226/federal-cholesterol/. To quote a report on cholesterol I heard on Australian TV: statins are akin to chopping down a whole tree when only a few branches are rotten.

In short: eat meat, eat bacon, eat butter, drink cream!

... I like skim milk...

Honestly, it does seem a little watered down, but it still tastes fine to me, I even prefer it. My absolute favorite thing about skim milk is this, I've forgotten about a glass I poured, and it sat out for over an hour, and when I drank it, it tasted the same as normal!  Try that with 2%, it starts to taste bad after being out for, like, 10 minutes. So, go skim milk!

F. Starr : Actually, that same fitness book I quote earlier states that skim milk contains MORE calcium than whole milk. So as a woman I guess you should stick to that since you ladies need more calcium.

As for milk turning bad: hun, that is strange. When was the expiry date? I rarely leave milk on the counter for THAT long.

Government science is a joke any more. It's all about money. You can find a study that says anything to back up enough cash. Scientists have families they need to support too. And pride. And by the way let's bankrupt our nation trying to fight global warming while we're at it since the rest of the world is so concerned about it. Talk about arrogance. They build armies, we plant trees. And still produce the most waste per capita than any major country. Leave the science to NASA, the army, and the private sector. Votes determine policy. Not scientists. Not suprised that they get food wrong. Trillions of dollars at stake there.

Ferdinand : Well... NASA IS a government agency. I admit they have done wonders for space exploration, but when it comes to more... contentious debates it does seem to be all about the money.

You should watch Fathead, which shows how government came to its dietary guidelines. (Hint: there is no science behind it).
