Majora's Mask glitch?

Usually I did this with the Fierce Deity mask, but I decided to go back and do it the hard way afterwards this time. With the Majora's Mask fight, there was simply no opening to attack him on the first form. If he wasnt swooping down to attack me then he was up too high for me to hit, and he turned around too fast for me to stun him with an arrow (really, he turned around too fast for the arrow to reach him in time). Luckily, I had the Fierce Deity mask and could down the first form with that. The rest of the fight was simple enough without it. I also couldnt use the deku, goron, or zora masks during the fight. Did I have a bad version of the game or something? It has the gold casing.

sometimes bosses are designed in such a way (especially in Zelda games) to force you to do certain things before you can progress. This sounds like one of those instances. Without that mask you might not be able to beat that boss easily or at all. There are plenty of times like this throughout the Zelda series. Certain items required to lift things or jump or whatever are needed to complete dungeons or bosses.
