I can't figure out what this instrument is, and I need to know for some songs I'm writing.
The sound is the generic "underwater/deep sea" sound that you hear mostly in GBA games like Megaman Zero 3, usually as a bass line, but is also used in volcano levels occasionally, especially in the Pokemon franchise, for example. It is also used in songs outside video games, which leads me to believe it can actually be created by an instrument.  It sure sounds like a bass, and certain songs make it seem certainly possible, but I've never actually heard a bass make this sound.  Is it a special or specific type of bass, is it a bass technique, is it a different instrument altogether, or is it a uniquely digital sound? I can't figure it out, so I wanted to know if any of you guys know.

Hey, Phantom. If you mean the bassline that plays right at the beggining of your posted Megaman video, I'm pretty sure it's a low played synth brass. You can hear a low brass all trough the song and the hits are even played lower. I don't think you can get that sound with any kind of real brass instrument, but if you make your music also on pc, you can easily find free and good sounding plugins that generate that type of sound for you.

moesceeto : ok, that sounds legitimate. I suppose you can run a bass through a synth to get a sound fairly close. I was wondering if it might be an altered bari sax sound, but in higher frequencies, it sounded a lot more like a bass. I'll try it out.

Hey there, It's me again. I don't know if you still need help with this one but I stumbled upon something and it remind of that post. It might even be helpful if you encounter this problem on a future project. There are two bands that play game music with real instruments, their names are "the one up's" and "Good Night Productions". The second one also including some electrical music parts. Hope this might help a little.
