I noticed that when people know you play games they think all you do is play games.
Society sees gamers either as the mentally unstable ready to crack thanks to video games or 500 pound dude in his mothers basement.
School if you play games and people know usually they think you play em from sun up to sun down and do nothing else which is untrue and annoying.
My family who is religious nutty; i have a grandad who believes games are satanic brainwashing and he believes anyone who plays em can and possibly will turn to satan.
Maybe you guys have experienced this so please share your experience below

Well, people seem to be learning that this isn't the case. News organizations have been shifting from "Games make you violent!" to "Games make you sexist," but people are catching on that video games don't directly influence your personality or anything like that. You might still find people who think like that, but 1:They're becoming rarer and rarer, and 2:Nobody else pays attention to them. I say good riddance.

Although, to be honest, I miss the wacky antics of Jack Thompson. I wish the video game detractors were more like him. He did dumb things, but he always managed to pull something unintentionally funny out of his hat.

Personally, I haven't had anyone directly telling me that games are evil, though. Maybe I'm just lucky or something.

NovemberJoy : I miss Jack Thompson too, i saw a video where this lawyer Paul Levinson ripped him a new one on national tv, it was great. His craziness about all this apparently got him disbarred so he is no longer an attorney

I've never had anyone tell me they were evil but my mom has always had that "They'll rot your brain." kind of attitude towards video games. She did kind of have that mind set though that you'd become addicted to them. Unless they were games that she liked, because liking puzzle games like Tetris was different because, ya know.. puzzles make you smarter, brain teasers are good for you, etc. I really didn't have a lot of video games growing up because she refused to buy any for me, but didn't really keep me from playing ones I had. She also blames video games and the internet for me hardly going outside, but really, I'm not that outdoorsy of a person. Before I had any gaming systems and such, I would spend hours in my room reading or playing with my other toys, but she never blamed the books for being a bad influence on me. I love my mother, and she's not horrible, she's just a little misguided sometimes.

I've known people that thought things like this, but thankfully as NovemberJoy said, they are becoming rarer. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that most of the people who initially thought that did so because "we didn't have video games when I was a kid" and honestly most adults now can't say that, since only people fifty or older can say that, and then most of those people's kids played games.

Plus with the explosion of social media, even senior citizens are now playing video games, if you count candy crush and other Facebook games as video games...and they are video games unfortunately (jk).

As for religious people...I actually quit gaming from 2001 through 2010 because I thought video games were evil. lol But I finally saw how scripturally unfounded that idea was.

There will always be people saying these things. I say let's just ignore it and enjoy ourselves.

Also, you gotta live people that say "Video games make you violent!" then turn around and watch a slasher film. xD No game will make me violent or rot my brain any more than watching mind numbing television programs. At least games keep our brains active and us engaged.

One misconception I hate is how people think that all games are Mario and SANIC THE HOGHEDGE with a mixture of COD and Battlefield while it goes very much deeper then that! And my parents also think that video games make me violent when in reality and the most caring person in my family

Eh, there are misconceptions about every type of person. And I think that negative video game connotation is going away, as it's becoming more accepted as an art form.

Thankfully, I've never had people tell me video games will make me violent. My dad was actually trying to get me to play COD when I was, like, 13-14 lol Guess he thought I should start playing them or something because they were the 'in' games around that time and I was playing Skyrim (still massively popular years after release, unlike 2012's COD), a game with magic and talking animal people instead of guns and generic military plots. My mother never really wanted me to play violent games beyond the tame ones such as Zelda or Metroid, but she never stopped me from playing games such as Skyrim or Borderlands once she deemed me mature enough not to attempt to emulate what I see on screen.

As one who likes video game music, I can say that The biggest misconception is that music has not evolved since The era of Super Mario Bros. 30 years ago... Come on! Just compare Dragon Warrior and Dragon Warrior IV; it is night and day! The latter has much more complex arrangements, even sometimes comparable to Sega Genesis.
