I mean we all know it's super helpful to Mario to get to places he can not jump to but do they die??
I mean Mario never comes back to check of them (I think of replaying a level as going back in Mario's time) so we never find out I always feel so guilty because what if they are stuck like that?? I think they can probably get out but we never find out!
What do you guys think? Do lumas die?

 It depends, because we know they're stars, and there's a glutton luma (the one who's holding star bits in rods) that eats star bits to transform  into a planet. But we ignore if ,after the transformation, they're still alive. I think they're still alive from the inside of those planets. Whatever the planet or which galaxy they have become, we will always believe that the lumas keep living until their real demise come to take their souls...

I don't know. The ones that turn into planets are still alive in the sense of what is one the planet because they are the planet themselves, but the others I'm not sure about. I think another good question is are they alive in the first place?

Rosalina loves the Lumas, but she doesn't really care when they transform or explode out of existence so I don't think they actually die. And at many times in the games, they transform because Mario saved them. And killing themselves right after that would make his deeds pretty pointless. I think they're beings made out of magic, and can take any kind of form as long as they got enough star bits. 
Also, Mario got a Luma cramped into his hat during the whole game (both the first and second game), and it's easy to see that it wouldn't be able to fit without transforming. And even though it transforms to fit in his hat, it ends up just fine.
