I actually get heated over this issue a little bit. Not so much over the flag, but over the stupid fights because of the flag. Some folks fly it for about the same reason Scots wear kilts (and I think that's next to be band once Scotland succeeds from the UK), which is family pride. Others fly it because of Southern pride and nothing more. Some, like the KKK, fly it for stupid reasons. A few use it like the Guys Fawkes mask, a sign of anarchy. While a good number of historians fly it to portray historic scenarios.

I feel it's utter non-sense to ruin something for everyone because a small group decides to add a darker meaning behind the flag. It's similar to banning the Christian Flag because a Westborro Church protested against homosexuals.

While I think waving around the confederate flag is stupid, and I can definitely see why people find doing so insensitive, and I would not hang around most people doing so, I don't t think it should be banned. I think freedom of expression is the most important and fundamental of human rights and it should not be limited just because it goes against the public opinion. If people think flying it is stupid, then reason about it in stead of trying to force people into a course of action. Just banning it wont change people's outlook on it, if anything it'll just make radicals more vocal about their opinions. There needs to be actual discussion.  Either way I think there are far more important things to focus on than a simple flag.

tornadocam : To be honest I don't think there are many people at all who find praying in itself offensive or want to try to stop that from happening in schools, from what I've seen the beef mostly seems to be with public schools making it obligatory or pushing it, which I think it's perfectly understandable to be upset about. I think the state should be impartial about religion whenever possible in order to protect religious freedom.
