So recently I have been thinking, how old is Pit? I originally thought his to have the human appearance of 13 in Uprising, and aged 1 angel year for every 5 human years, which made him 8 in the original NES classic. However yesterday I actually watched a load of conversations that Pit has with his Goddess on SSB 4, and the one with Link, Pit tells us that they were both born around the same time, which is a clear reference to their first NES game release dates. So without further ado, I attempt to put reason to how old Pit actually is.

But wait! Can you just take the age of Link and then job done?
Well....yes and no. It is hinted a lot in Zelda games that Link has several reincarnations, as well as Zelda and Gannon. One Link is different to another, from different time lines and such, but that's a different discussion. To what point can I decide which Link is "the Link" to compare ages with Pit for the present? I cannot pick one. However, perhaps Pit doesn't quite understand this, and is merely referencing when they were born in the NES days. I will therefore use the Link from The Legend of Zelda NES as a point of reference. However it can be said the Link in SSB 4 and the one in the NES are different, but the Pit in all games including him are the same.

The facts:

  • Link was 10 in the origial Legend of Zelda NES game (citation: Hyrule Historia)
  • Pit is therefore the same age in the NES classic

Maths & Statistics:
Chart Reference: http://www.chartsgraphsdiagrams.com/HealthCharts/height-2-20-boys.html
Height Reference: http://orig06.deviantart.net/a638/f/2014/201/1/3/super_smash_bros_height_chart./_by_kumaonioni-d7rh0a4.jpg

I will be using the chart above to determine the age that the heights in the picture below the chart link give us.

Pit is 5 ft 3 inches tall
Link is 5 ft 11 inches tall

Link:
5 ft 11 inches = 71 inches. This equals to only three percentiles on the given chart:
75% 90% and 95% (ages 14.5, 15.2 and 17 respectfully)
Average age of these are 15.6 years old.
Rounded up, this is 16 years old.
This ties in with his Ocarina of Time Adult age (16) and Twilight Princess age (16) cited from
Hyrule Historia. This calculation is purely trivial.

Pit:
5 ft 3 inches = 63 inches. This equals an age of 13.5 years old for 50% of children recorded. (this can also mean ages of 11.75, 12.25, 12.75, 14,25, 15, 15.75 for 5%, 10%, 25%, 75%, 90% and 95% percentiles respectfully)
Average of all the percentiles is 13.6 years old.
Rounded up is 14 years old. We can assume this is his "appearance age" as an angel in SSB 4.

Two year age difference in appearance. (trivial)

So now the calculations:
Month to a decible point: 1/12 = 0.0833

Pit appears 14 according to his height in SSB for Wii U and 3DS and was physically 10 years old in the original NES game.

  • SSB Wii U released September 2014
  • Kid Icarus released December 1986
27 years 9 months difference. This would be rounded up to 28 years. 14 years - 10 years = 4 years difference in his appearance age.
28/4 = 7 years.

Pit ages 1 angel year for every 7 human years.
Therefore Pit is actually...98! Very nice :3

For comparison, here is the release of Kid Icarus uprising: March 2012
25 years 3 month difference. This would be rounded to 25 years.
25/4 = 6.25 years

So in Uprising, he would age 1 angel year for every 6.25 human years.

And SSBB, don't forget that as well: released Jan 2008
21 years difference (rounded)
21/4 = 5.25 years

His human to angel year growth seems to gets lower the closer his appearance is to the NES game release date. Perhaps using the same appearance age over so long might not be working. After all, all the above assumes his
appearance age is *14 IN SSB 4*

Personally, I think Pit looks 13 in Uprising. Let's ignore the last two calculations and let's tweak the calculations slightly:
Uprising from NES: 25 year difference
25/3 = 8.33 years! (0.33/0.0833=3.96, so 4 months making 8 years 4 months total)

And personally I think he looks 13 in SSBB as well:
From NES to SSBB is a 21 year difference
21/3 = 7 years

Average between the three: (7+7+8.33)/3 = 7.5 years.

Okay, so using an average from a little guess work, I can assume that when Pit ages 1 angel year, he ages 7.5 human years. So now we can work out Pit's human age, we need to find how his angel age. We'll do this by taking a rough guess and assume he is 14 in SSB 4 because of the chart. But what age was he in SSBB? We can work backwards here to get the answer.

Time difference between SSBB and SSB 4:
Sep 2014 - Jan 2008 = 6 years 8 months. This is equal to 6.66 years. (0.5+(0.0833*2) for the months as decibel points).

Whoa, slow down there. The Smash Bros. games are completely non-canon. They're just a fighting game for a bit of fun. Why should his age be connected between them at all?

In SSB 4, Pit was talking to the characters in the game with references to Uprising.
One could argue that for him, the events are quite real! Palutena talks about the SubSpace Emissary, they reference how Dark Pit came to be, and so on and so forth. They even reference being in a game along the lines of "Super Bash Sisters" or something like that in Uprising. Therefore one can deduce that the information from the SSB 4 is quite canon for the Kid Icarus time line. They do like to destroy the forth wall, again and again.

So wait, if these two games are logically linked (by the fuzzy angel logic known to Pit's
Angel Land), then what's the age?

6.66 human years pass from SSBB to SSB 4 (from calculation above)
6.66 human years/7.5 human years = 0.89 angel years (0.89/0.0833 = 10.68, so
a little over 10 months 2 weeks total. 11 months rounded.)
0.89 years equals roughly 11 months, assuming they work like human years.

Therefore when SSBB released, Pit's birthday was 1 month behind his birthday already for him to just turn Angel 14 years old for SSB 4.
Pits birthday: 19th Dec (Cool, he's a Capricorn, just like me )
+ 1 month = 19th Jan

When did SSBB release?
SSBB released 31st Jan 2008
1 month after Pits birthday was the release of SSBB. So he just turned 13 as a "human appearnce age" at this time.

Then when SSB 4 came along, 6.66 human years later, pit aged the 0.89 years he needed to be 14 for that game, which is what the height indicated from the chart, bringing it to 14 years old.

With this, Pits age can be up for speculation. This would bring his
age to 13.08 years old in SSBB (13  years 1 month, 13 + 0.0833 to two significant figures) and then his age would be 13.64 years old in Uprising (4 years 2 months = 4.17 (13 + (0.0833*2) to two significant figures, 4.17 human years /7.5 human years = 0.56 angel years + 13.08 = 13.64)

The average above from the chart given was 13.6 years old.
Two pretty similar numbers, eh?

This is of course assuming his appearance age is 14 in SSB 4 alone.
So....the final calculations!

SSBB: 13.09*7.5 = 98.10 human years old.
Uprising: 13.64*7.5 = 102.30 human years old.
SSB 4: 14*7.5 = 105.00 human years old.
Original NES game: 10*7.5 = 75.00 human years old.

Evauation:
Now, Pit IS an angel, and that means he doesn't follow the normal laws of logic. He uses a harp and enemies turn into squeaky pink mallets he can pick up for goodness sake! So using statistics might not be 100% true for this kind of test. However, when Angel Land decide to share their information on angels and their height at certain ages and how long their year is, this is all we have to go on.

Mario haven't aged a day since Mario 64, and that has over a decade between then and now, and it's likely that Pit will not age much (if at all) in future
installments.

HOWEVER....in one of the conversations for SSB 4 is that Pit said that both he and Palutena were just freshmen back then.... a freshmen at 75? That just blows everything out of the water! Maybe angels in Angel Land do things different in Angel Academy or something, whatever it is. It might be possible he actually used it as a term for both of them just starting out in Palutena's Army. Who knows!

It's good to take this with a pinch of salt, because Pit's an angel and all that, and the reality of it all is that it actually might be a lot simpler than all this if the creators decide to say what his actual age is, and there might not even be a human year conversion to play a part in it, but I like to think otherwise. Even more so, if I assumed his appearance age is 15 instead of 14 (which is entirely possible) and brought everything forward a year to these calculations, then everything would still work out. It's all down to interpretation of how old he actually looks, as we all know we can miss the mark by a year or two when guessing someones age.

It's not official, but that's my mathematical take on the age of our winged friend of Angel Land. Probably not all that important but hey, for me, it's laid to rest until something official turns up that I have overlooked.

Please note that the chart given might hold some inaccuracies as all reports may do, and that it is not the definitive chart on heights of boys at certain ages. I also may have used the percentiles averages incorrectly so if that is wrong please let me know.

God you spent a long time on that. And the first step of your whole theory, the very foundation and base of it, was based on height, the most inaccurate way of measuring age. Guess how old I was when I was 5 ft 8? 12. Height is extremely varying from person to person. Also, just a quick Google search brings up this: "According to Masahiro Sakurai, Pit is about 13 years old when converted from the human body." That means his age in human years slightly varies from game to game. Maybe he's 12 years old in the original Kid Icarus, just 13 in Brawl, 13 and a half in Uprising, and 14 in Sm4sh. Also that makes those final calculations way off, assuming the actual game's creator is correct.

But that's what video game theories are all about. Seeing what game creators say about certain details of the game or game's characters, then using statistics to prove them wrong. Very good job on this, I can see you put a lot of thought into it.

TheFadedWarrior: "According to Masahiro Sakurai, Pit is about 13 years old when converted from the human body." Well, it seems I forgot to do some very basic and fundamental research xD (and I was relying on the Kid Icarus Wiki to have the information on this. Shame on me for depending on an openly edited informations site!).

I will agree that height is indeed very varying from person to person. The chart I used is not a definite and absolute value on the matter. Not even a standard deviation was supplied, although this could be calculated. However, if Pit is indeed 13 as the creator has stated, then the average of percentiles of his height on the chart
does actually point towards a similar age (13.6 years old). Angel age in my case. Although any Otaku will gladly tell us that Anime related characters will often have absolutely no connection between age, height, body development and behavior. Please allow me to use this information then to update my theory here to find the Angel Land age rate. You know, like dog years, only for angels.

Now, since it is known Pit is 13, at least in SSBB - when converted to the human body - It is a question of how slowly he actually ages, since all the events in his games seems to be one straight time line. However, it is also a question as to if he actually does age like all the over Nintendo characters. Since his age appearance seems to actually have changed physically from the beginning to at least SSBB, I am going to assume that it is the former.

Since the age is already determined, height can be taken out of the equation. I will still stand by him being 10 in the original game, aging 3 years in the space of 21 actual years. This means he ages 1 year per 7 years. Technically this should be true, since Pit breaks the forth wall every time he opens up that mouth of his. (announcing it's been 25 years since he has served his goddess at the beginning of Uprisng, which was the actual time in the real life since the original and the sequel).

So mathematically, Pit was 10, but also 70. Known as 10 in Angel Land, but 70 human years had passed.

So in Brawl, he was 13, but according to my theory also 91.

So how many human years passed since the release of Sm4sh from SSBB? (can't believe that spelling is a thing : p)
6 years 8 months. One can manipulate this data to round it to 7 years, and that should add an age of 1 to Pit for Sm4sh, making him 14 with this calculation, but also 98 years old to the human world.

My final calculations were a little off because it was of 7.5 instead of 7, but the ending numbers are still pretty close. I still think the following:

Pit's age:
SSBB: 13.09 years old.
Uprising: 13.64 years old.
SSB 4: 14 years old.

So with this a prediction could be formed that if a smash game in the future was released in 7 years time and featured Pit, he would be 15. However I doubt he will look any older in any future games. I rather he stays this way, it fits the innocent and adorable angel look.

So yeah, I think I'm done now. Turns out using height was a waste of time since the actual age was stated and I didn't need to work backwards to get one.

That's a lot of work you've put into it! I was really getting into it. Until we got word from Mossyhero Soccerguy that he's just 14. Although honestly I didn't expect 98 or 14. Haha. I guess if Miyamoto can be Bowser Jr's mother, anything's possible!
