I think that people should be able to do any drug they want to. Though I don't like that some drugs hurt people, but, we do have lots of poisoness things that are freely open to us. As long as they're aren't hurting anyone else, I think that drugs should be legal.

What do you guys think?

I think that some of them should remain legal, and some of them should be illegal. I'm fine with the way things are right now (from what I heard), except for marijuana being legal in some places.

If we make all drugs illegal, many people will rebel and still do them anyway, or demand for the drugs to be made legal again.

Barathemos : I should've known someone would say that in this thread.

This is a mighty sticky argument, but I sort of have the same stand point of PacmanandMariofan on this. Some drugs should never be legal, such as heroin, since they serve no practical purpose while others should remain legal, such as aspirin, since they serve a practical purpose while others need to be strickly controlled and only be conditionaly legal, such as pain relievers like morphine and the concoctions used to ween addicts of off hard drugs. Street drugs will never be eliminated since the market is far to profitable, but with enough effot it can be somewhat controlled.

Chindogu : Yeah, I change my mind on that one. My brother died of a morphine overdose because he tried a little heroin at a party, then he later took some pain killers because he hurt his leg really bad the other day.

It does not matter if they are legal or illegal. What you want is what you get one way or another. Personally, it makes no difference to me. Either it is the gangster who gets paid or the government.

You do have to consider the law enforcement point of view which is that there are numerous drug induced car accidents + crimes.

Example: we should go rob a bank, or carjack someone because we just did this drug and we feel like we're on top of everything and everyone.

On the subject of never legalizing drugs like heroin, I'll have to disagree.

They legalized heroin in the Netherlands, gave it out for free in a clinical environment and heroin use went down by 70% AIDS transmission went down as well. When drug usage is viewed as a clinical disorder, it's not as cool. Providing government help for addicts and rehabilitating them would also cost less than just sticking them in a jail cell. I just don't understand why people think putting people in a cage with other people with the same problem will magically fix their problems.

A few might be okay to be allowed such as medical marijuana. But I do not want to see Meth, Heroin, anabolic steroids or cocaine legal. These drugs destroyed some of my friends and their families. In fact people I know who got mixed in with these drugs some of them are now dead. Drugs destroy lives and family. These type of drugs can turn people into raging monsters were they not only hurt themselves but friends and families. If they are ever made legal I fear that more teens and young people will try them and we will have an epidemic. Addiction is a powerful thing to overcome. Not to mention if we allowed drugs I would be concerned that more gangs would come in than they are now trying to set up trade routes. This would create more violence in cities

As for prisons, I think the best way to solve that problem is for the first offense instead of going to jail. Be allowed to go to a treatment center. If a person is addicted chances are the drugs are a coping mechanism and that they need treatment and counseling.

As a preamble let me talk a little bit about lawmaking and why we, as societies make laws. Our laws serve several functions but we're focused  here on the penal one where we punish actions that violate our moral code. This function worst towards the following objectives: demotivating the immoral acts, punishing perpetrators, protecting potential victims, helping current victims. All of these things have a cost to society in the form of legal costs, police time and resources, prison space and resources, courtroom time, judge time, civilian jury time, etc. so overall the cost of the immoral action to society must be greater than the cost of these things to society. If our police is too busy catching petty thieves to investigate serial murderers, society loses, if tax money is dumped into small traffic law violations and their prosecutions that could've gone to detaining and processing rapists, society loses.

This is very much the case with the illegality of recreational cannabis. Police time is wasted, prisons are overcrowded, money is dumped into them, and honestly all those resources are better put into targeting other societal problems or redirected to things like education and healthcare. The cost to society of pot use is little (when compared to legal drugs like alcohol or even nicotine) while the cost to society of wasted police time, overcrowded prisons and less money that's usable by the state is very very high.
The next big issue, that applies not only to pot laws but really all of them is that they target and prey on the weak of society. The people that get arrested and imprisoned for drug possession aren't rich and middle class white users (who do in fact consume A LOT  of drugs) but rather poor and black or latino people. Cracking down on production and trafficking is very good because a lot of drugs have high cost to society, and not always as a result of their consumption but as a result of the actions of drug cartels and dealing circles. However, when you go after people who possess it, you arrest them and permanently damage their record, there's just a vulnerable weak person who's last sliver of hope you've taken away from. Instead, governments should have rehab programs and decriminalized possession (with criminalized dealing and production)

Basically, laws should be attacking poverty rather than attacking the poor.
We'll never get rid of drug use and abuse. Ever since people discovered drugs they've been using them and that's just not gonna end, but a set of laws and a system of enforcement that provides new opportunities to nonfunctional addicts and that doesn't waste public resources on petty issues or nonissues. Education should encourage responsible use, and present itself as "don't be afraid to seek help" and "these kinds of drugs are very addictive" without the gross exaggeration (health textbook descriptions on the long term effect of, say, weed are at best flimsy and at worst way off) and fearmongering that they generally employ.

Serious tho, make them legal but over 21. Would solve problems.

The only thing I think that should be made legal is weed. I don't smoke it myself but I probably would start smoking it if it was legal. Though it's not and I would rather not fail a drug test if I need to take one trying to get a job

While I find drug usage to be counter-productive, I personally think that it's best to take society's benefit as a whole into consideration. As such, I believe all drugs should be legal, regulated and taxed, kinda like it currently is with tobacco and alcohol. That would result on more money available to invest in other areas, as well as a vastly reduced investment into combating drugs (which again implies into even more money for other areas). The fact that it's regulated would also mean some of the risks that we currently have because of drugs would cease to exist, since a quality control would take place. Surely it's not all sunshine and happiness, but the fact remains that irresponsible, stupid and/or evil individuals that are destructive to themselves and those around them have always existed, even before commercializing drugs was an issue.

Whether or not we prohibit drugs entirely or legalize them, those kinds of people and the issues and tragedies that they tend to bring won't cease to exist. In fact, I personally think letting those people lead themselves to their demise is a good way to motivate people to seek a different outcome, because it would certainly become even more well known on a direct perspective, which is usually when people truly start to care most of the time.

If anything, we'd be speeding up the evolution of the species. Those unable to see that self-harm and addiction in exchange for pleasure isn't going to lead to a good outcome in the end should naturally perish if you ask me. But hey, that's just heartless me talking, I'm fully aware that if this happened it would also imply on the suffering of those that have some sort of bond with said individuals. I just honestly believe that's not enough to justify hindering the progress of the species, even though that's unarguably cruel of me.

I don't think it should be a legal at all , Really i see a lot of people in my school do a lot of stupid and bad stuff and drugs well just make it worst.

And like you said some drugs DO hurt people so yeah , Like sonicadventure said drugs should die , There not going to make our world any better and if anything it well make it much worst and we don't need that .

Also i am very glad that's  my school makes sure we don't take any drugs , It can be annoying they have to check every day  but i feel a lot safer like that
