Tomb Raider (#1 on PS) freezing

I got the Playstation item and I am playing the first Tomb Raider.  It was going fine but now it is freezing at the exact same point, on the second level, right when I pull the lever right before the second blue save crystal.  It happens every time and when it freezes, I have to restart the em.  Hitting F4 for the saved state does take it back to before it froze but then it just freezes again when I pull the lever.  And pulling the lever is necessary to get through the level, so I can't just skip it.

I have tried all the various things (restarting the em, starting a new game) but nothing works.

Has anyone else had this issue and is there a way around it?
