When I first saw the trailers for this movie, I told myself that looked like it could be a good movie but I never had a chance to see it, but once I finally did see it I knew why I thought it was going to be a good movie, because I was right. Everything about the movie was great, it started off really slow but then got really cool later on and then got really dark and depressing as well which I kind of like because it leads to a massive story.
The movie is about this guy who is a photographer and takes pictures of big crime scenes and starts selling them to a news station. He hires someone to help him out and then they go around looking for news while they compete against another photographer, but then everything goes downhill from there.
How should I put this? The photographer is kind of crazy and will do whatever he needs to in order to make sure that he gets paid and that will include doing some dark things in the end. After his competitor gets to this big story before him, he somehow crashes his car and gets very injured and it only gets darker from there so if you love a good thrilling sorry, this is the one for you.
The movie doesn't actually use many effects because with something like this, nothing big I needed aside for some small stuff to make a fire here and there and an explosion or two, but for the most part all of the effects of the movie were just from props and makeup because cutting edge action isn't needed here, just the story and dialogue itself is enough to make it worth sitting through the movie and not lose interest and part of the reason this move is so fun to watch without cool graphics is because of the star, Jake Gyllenhaal.
Jake was just superb and this one of his best performances ever. Personally this was my third favorite movie ever by him and in terms of acting and story, I was just behind Prisoners, another very dark and suspenseful movie that was just stunning. All of the other actors around him were great as well, such as Bill Paxton who played as the other photographer, but Jake was the main event, who made playing a mad man look easy.
If you like thrillers that have great stories and acting, then this is the movie for you, if I had seen this when I had came out in 2014, there's no doubt this would have been one of the 3 best movies that I have seen all year.
