One of the greatest shows for Comedy Central (if not for all time)

The show revolves around a guy named Joel who worked at a lab, but his bosses didn't like him, so they shot him into space. The antagonists, Dr Forrester and buffoon Frank keep him in a ship called the Satellite Of Love. Forrester has a plan of sending awful movies to find the perfect awful movie to make a human zombie race.

Joel however builds a few robot companions, most notably Tom Servo and Crow to keep his sanity from the movies and they riff on them.

Basically they often riff i'm front of a theatre screen and often sketches on the movie they watch. They often look at on bad B movies like The Killer Shrews, Robot Monster, Brain That Wouldnt Die.

Joel left the show during the 5th season, who was replaced by Head Writer Mike who often played the skit characters on the show. The show lasted another five seasons with Mike and got a cult fanbase.

Also, it invented Stingers which are 5-15 second clips after the credits which showcase a scene in the movie that the writers thought was funny.

Have any of you guys had the luck to watch Mystery Science Theater 3000?

No I haven't, but i'll probably check it out later.

By the way, your discription reminds me of Nostalgia Critic with the bad movies.

MST3K must've been the inspiration for Nostalgia Critic in a way.

I haven't seen that show in years. I've seen it way back in the day. 14 years ago, or just about. I remember laughing at some of the funny lines they used. Some of the movies, though not great, weren't so bad either. Something I learned last month while reading a Minnesota book back home was that MSTK actually started off as a radio show (though in a different form back then) meant to fill space on a Minnesota radio station. It eventually became good and was decided to be made into a television thing. Now it is as you see it today.

Go MN.

It was actually a UHF station and surprisingly, a friend of mine just realized that he lived 40 minutes away from the taping of MST3K in Hopkins.

Mystery Science Theater 3,000 did what we all wanted to do: mock films openly without any reservations. Only the three (four if you count the new guy) charming characters presented in the original series can get away with talking during a big theater film.

The only real pity is what happened when they tried to make a movie of it. Inevitably and quite ironically it bombed, only thirty minutes long (which is even more retarded when you consider that's half the length of the TV show episodes) and they couldn't even bother to copy new rolls of film, so they had to play it at only one theater at a time. Terrible.

MST3K is one science fiction series that will never die. Farewell, sweet prince.

I love MST3K, both the episodes with Joel and the ones with Mike Nelson.

For those of you that love the show and miss it dearly, I do have good news for you. The three MST3K guys are still around and still at it via Rifftrax. It's a website they run themselves and they now make fun of mainstream movies. You pay like $3 a movie for the audiotrack, sync it with the movie and off you go. It's amazing. Periodically they do live riffs as well. Back in September they riffed Plan 9 From Outer Space, this past December was a series of Christmas shorts. It's awesome. Check them out: http://www.rifftrax.com/

There's also Cinematic Titanic which is most of the cast during the Joel years.

I'm ressurecting this thread because I've recently gotten to love the show.

I saw the movie about a year ago and loved it. It was only until Xfighter reccomended to me some episodes to watch about 2 weeks ago that I saw some.

Now every 2 or 3 nights I ask XF what episode to watch next, he is the ultimate MST3K master by the way.

I absolutely love the show and the movie. Such a different cheesy sense of humor.

I recommend starting off with Pod People or War of the Colossal Beast.
