What do you look for?

Me?

I just want a good time, something not focused on sex, or any of that junk, (especially in the Sonic franchise.) Cuase it's just so misplaced, and unfitting. I don't mind if a story has someone have a baby, but to make two characters. (especially in a series like Sonic) have sexual relations is just so, so out of place, and tells me you've missed the feel of the main series.

Plus sexual actions are very private. That they would go recorded is a large misdemeanor to me.

Another thing I hate is when straight characters are made gay. This makes huge character changes to the characters in question, and does no justice to the original settings.

When I write fanfiction, I think about what fans wanted to see expanded upon, or, what kind of adventure would the main characters undertake?

If the main franchise won't give us deep stories anymore, then we're all that's left, and are gonna have to continue the legacy on our own.

The number one thing I look for, is maintaining the heart of the series. Taking familiar characters and doing vastly unfamiliar things is a waste of time, and you should use your own characters for it. Staying true the core, keeping characters in character makes your story nostalgic and drives it to success. In fact, the current reputation for fanfiction is sooo bad, that I might not have started doing it if I had known. (But that one humor fanfic about Star Fox, plus Rping just had to get me going.)

What do you look for in fanfiction. Why do you enjoy it?

"I don't usually read fanfics, but when I do it's because it's one of the 0.1% that doesn't give me cancer."

Ok, enough with "The Most Interesting Man in the World", what I'm looking for in fanfics are:

0- Correct spellings and grammars. Let's be honest, when reading fanfics with spelling error in the first page, it doesn't give you a good first impression doesn't it? (that's why it's listed as No. 0)

1- I don't mind if the fanfic sticks to its original plot, but I certainly wouldn't want to read a copy-pasted fanfic that has nothing new to introduce (no new events, no another perspective, and......as much as I hate to say this......no Original Character from the writer)

2- Emphasizing on the the reader's view (not how to explain this, but let's take an example:
Spike gathered his friends to go and investigate a haunted house, they entered inside and the door closed by itself, the group got scared and walked forward until a ghost appeared.....
I think you know what I mean now, I just wanted the writer to give life to the fanfic by saying what does the character think, feels, etc)

3- NO MARY SUE OR GARY STEW (google that up). Seriously, they just make the story predictable and dull. (There are however excellent character who are mary sue or gary stew, mainly because they are well-written unlike many fanfics I've read so far)

4- I can tolerate mild sexuality levels (like mentioning them), but I cannot tolerate high sexuality levels. (like literally sexual actions)

5- And finally, a good execution to the fanfic's theme, whether it be humor, adventure, mystery, horror, or even gore.
As long as it does it's job right, I'm more than happy to read it again and again.

6- Anything that is actually REAL or could HAPPEN in real life.

7- No major plot holes, twisting a story ridiculously to your liking is a bad sign for a writer. (I have to admit, it is hard but a good writer knows how to solve this)

So yeah, these are what I want whenever I want to read a fanfic.

And recently, I've found this (FNAF) fanfic that I liked it:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11189614/1/A-mangled-perspective
(Note: you need to be a bit familiar with fnaf 1 2 3 to understand some things..............on second thought, never mind, read and enjoy!)

So anybody here wants to share his opinion with me?

Besides the obvious, I adore finding young and old alike making their fictions intensely personal, exploring themselves through favourite shows, characters and stuff!
Such a feel good thing when people can have meaningful connections with the media they grow up around, and meet fans with similar interests.

Since it was mentioned above, I'd like to give my own feelings on the matter of romance: ALL the homo.
There's little representation of all the different relationships in media as it is, so the more the merrier.

PS. Shadow and Sonic are totally bromantic for each other

As for sexual content..
in fiction made by young teens and adults,
I can forgive on the grounds of self-exploration through characters they relate to,
but when it's from fully grown adults,
it attracts toxic crowds to the fandom, and only encourages more. its pretty bad...

I don't normally read a lot f fan fiction but when I do there are certain things I would rather it would have than not. Some of these things are pretty obvious like good spelling and grammar. I lose interest very fast if it has bad spelling or can't even understand what is being said because of the grammar. Some not-so-obvious things that I like in fan-fiction is realism. For an example, if I was reading a fan fic about The Legend of Zelda, I would want it to pertain to Hyrule or something like that. I would probably lose interest in something if link ended up going to space or something XD. I also like a really good story too. Something that would make me want to continue reading.

Sword legion: What I look for in fanfiction is quite simple actually and I would like to go into detail of exactly why I look for these.

Story: Well this is obvious because what is a good fanfic without a good story. When I read fanfiction I want the story to hook me when It succeeds in doing so I will be sure to read all of it same goes for the opposite if I does not hook me then it generally will make me bored very quick so yeah.

Good Characters: I like stories that have good characters that make the story interesting. Examples of this are perhaps there personality could be unique and not just based off something that already exists unless it is a fic about said already made person. I also like if the character has a good backstory a backstory where you can relate it generally makes me more attached to the character in general so if the character has a good backstory I tend to like the character whether it be protagonist or antagonist.

Nice plot twists: I like plot twists a lot actually they make me stay on my toes when reading wondering if something is as it seems and when I'm sure something will happen and it does something completely different it makes me shocked and surprised that it happened and usually makes me more engaged.

Realism: Now this is something that to me does not mean what you think it means. I am okay with magic and supernatural powers and stuff but what I look for is why a particular thing has that power. I want a explanation for why things happen stories usually make me less interested when they do something without a somewhat logical reason and I'm pretty sure most of you agree with me.

And that's about it I guess can't really think of more since I am very tired at the time of writing this and thanks for reading X3

When I read fanfiction, I expect another emotional thrill ride like what I experienced in the original canonical work. In fact, I often read fanfiction because the work was so special to me, I just couldn't admit to myself that it's over, such as KttK or FMA. Therefore, I look for in-character depictions of the main heroes. I find sexual conduct completely out of place and disgusting, and there's absolutely no need for it. What I really enjoy is when an author takes the original story and gives it a twist or finds a way to make it seem new again without having to resort to cheap tricks, and still retaining the spirit of the original.

It needs a good plot. No one wants to read an incoherent mess with plot holes left and right. For example, if the story takes place in a law school, don't have a teenaged character with straight F's attending- most law schools require a pre-law program, so if you're some sort of super genius you could get in, but definitely not if you have all F's. They'd kick you out in a heartbeat.

And my biggest pet peeve with fanfiction are the SHIPS. I hate non-canon ships, unless they are somewhat plausible. For example, in Fullmetal Alchemist, Jean Havoc and Rebecca Catalina are not a couple. HOWEVER it is entirely plausible they could be, considering the way they interacted in the show. Likewise, Armstrong's sister Catherine suddenly deciding she likes Jean might happen, but it'd take quite a while of character development to explain how she'd change her mind after her initial rejection. Ridiculous ships would be something like a straight character suddenly turning gay with no explanation or two canon enemies suddenly deciding they're deeply in love. (I should note that my OTP Saturday x Sunday sort of breaks this rule, since they spend all of KttK hating each other, but I should point out that all the great Saturday x Sunday fics are gradual shifts in their opinions; in one I read, the author took them through the correct milestones- speaking cordially to each other, seeing other as equals, and THEN the romance. All the fics I hate skip these steps and get right to the shipping).

There's also grammar and spelling. Yes, it's not vital, but it makes the author seem either lazy or uneducated.

Sorry for the ridiculously long post. As you can tell, I feel somewhat strongly about this.
