Does anyone else dread these?

I have family in town for Easter and I'm absolutely hating it. My wife has a younger brother who is about 15 and he has absolutely no manners or discretion or anything. He broke a lamp of ours and spent half the day complaining about how bored he is. I just want them all gone.

Does anyone else dislike family visits?

I feel the same way. I have a cousin who's slightly older than me but kicked our dog down a flight of steps. I can't tell you how angry that makes me just to think about it. It gave him some sort of weird satisfaction.

That side of the family is also filled with very heavy smokers and an aunt who won't listen to anyone. Sometimes I'll find someone in my room going through my stuff because they were "looking for something".

I enjoy the wrestling we watch together, the barbecues, and hours spent playing football and/or ping pong (loser has to do 20-30 pushups and 150 steps at every loss). It's just the rest of it makes me kind of glad that I only have to deal with it a few weeks out of every year now.

Yes I dread it. Depending on the 'family', to the point of having panic attacks when they come over. Literal panic attacks; the whole 'can't breathe, feeling like I'm going to die, the world is ending, know it's stupid but that just makes it worse' kind. It's gotten to the point that when some people come to our house, I say hello and then disappear into my room with the door shut just to keep myself sane. Mom has kind of given up on making me be social during those particular visits... which is good, because the person who causes the panic attacks is my aunt and I intensely dislike her. Can't say hate because I don't want her dead. I just simply don't want her in my life.

She treats me like garbage or like I don't exist anyway, so there's really no love lost between us, and me having panic attacks from the sheer dread of having her come over has SPARED me in a sense. I don't have to deal with her and can keep my stress levels as low as possible with people here once the attack stops.  Silver linings, I suppose.

I wouldn't say I dread them but I always have a hard time, be it for my own family or my in-laws.

In my family, my parents are always - I barely exaggerate - fighting for bits and nothings. The last time I went they were screaming at each other TWO minutes after we met. Plus, my father's mood is a disgrace everywhere; Honey got traumatized by it so much that he tries avoiding him as much as possible. I can't blame him...

For my in-laws the problem is mostly cultural. They are from the Dominican Republic and my spoken Spanish is still too limited to have good conversations - especially with those still living in the country - although I can usually understand what they say pretty well. Those living in the U.S. can usually speak and understand English but we are so different from each other - I mostly live around Honey's aunts who are in their late 60s and have nothing in common with me. We are also worlds apart with respect to politics; the most intellectual of Honey's aunt is a well-articulated woman but she's a hardcore statist. Our conversations are fortunately respectful but her abysmal knowledge of economics is appalling.

Nope. My family usually don't want to come inside, let alone stay in the house if they are here in the city.

Why don't you just smack that kid around some if he has no manners? If your wifes family is too shy to teach him any, you should be able in your own home. That is your right, am I right?

I guess it depends on which family members are coming over. Most of the family members that come over to visit are pretty cool. We're all close and we all get along great. I always find it fun having them over and preparing a meal.

The family members that I tend to avoid are never invited over by anyone in my household since we all feel the same way about them. If they're invited somewhere for a visit and I am too, I wont go.

I love my family, or at the very least, my brothers and parents. Seeing them all again is great. I can stomach their kids and my younger cousins for a little while, but when I want to read a book I want to read a book, get away from me. Let's say I like family visits when I can leave whenever I want
