My Mum loves Neil Diamond and John Denver; she's also super into the 80s and she'll listen to contemporary country music, which is definitely not my thing. My stepdad...I don't really have a gauge as to what his music is, but he likes Diamond and Denver, and he'll listen to 70s classic rock. And if a song/band is very popular in the kind of way that it's well-known, they usually like it too. They're both 45 years old as I type this.
My taste in music is very, very varied. I had stages of appreciation for different genres of music, starting around 5th or 6th grade (prior to that I just listened to whatever my ears liked). In rough order the "phases" were: Elvis Presley, 80s, Sirius XM Alt Nation radio, Sirius XM Octane radio/alt metal + grunge, K-Pop and J-Rock (or really, anime themes), Gregorian chanting_ African spirituals + whatever choir music I was forced to sing, Alternative rock/dance music, 60s Oldies, and now currently indie rock/blues/folk music in general. Keep in mind these phases usually lasted 1 - 1 1/2 years before something else took ahold of me, but I still love all of these genres just the same.
It's funny how my taste in music is all over the freaking place and theirs are just so niched. The only thing we have in common is our assertion that Neil Diamond is a national treasure.
