Ok, so I thought you meant wearing a pail on one's head so I had to do a little googling to jog my memory.
In the end I have decided that I think a bucket looks better than a bucket hat, but let's save that whole discussion for another thread.
If I had to wear one I would prefer to have a drawstring with a short brim.
No one I know wears a bucket hat.

I think it depends on where you are wearing one, to be perfectly honest. Certain places and with certain outfits, yes, they are fashionable, and I personally prefer a wide brim without a string. I burn, not tan, and I am very sensitive to sunlight *cue the vampire jokes* so wide-brimmed hats are a boon to me. 

It doesn't hurt that you can get some nice-looking ones now, either. I've seen them in every pattern and every material, though peeersonally I still prefer the straw ones. They just look nicer.

I've never cared about fashion to start with (at least, not to the point that I must absolutely buy new clothes). Those hats look pretty on some people and ugly on others. If people want to wear them, just go for it instead of waiting to be "trendy".
