With the new update, if you press Ctrl+F12, you open a cheat menu. I dunno how it works at all. Doing the search cheats then hitting Do search makes a bunch of random things show up. It really confuses me. I'm doing this with Fire Emblem [gba]

The new cheat functionality with mednafen is rather complex. I only got one code to work, which was max money in pokemon emerald. The cheat panel doesn't use gameshark codes, i don't think. some sort of modified version. I think it has to do with addresses and things, so thats complicated.

I can't make codes, and I bet a lot of people couldn't. I can't even find the codes on the internet except for the 1 pokemon emerald one

In short, its complex and doesn't use normal cheat codes. thats all i know.

yoshirulez! : How did you get the code to work? Did you have a specified button to press and it would activate, or does it just activate?

pokeman354 : The system is extremely complicated.
Depending on the code, the settings are going to be different.
Let's say you want to give your character in slot 1 sword skill level S.

Here is what the code would look like:
Sword Skill - 3202BD78 00ZZ

Ok, so that needs to be broken down.

We are going to start with pressing 2 for Cheat Search... on the cheat menu
Followed by 1 for Add Cheat

Name should probably be "Sword Skill Slot 1" (you can name it whatever you want, but that just makes it easier to find)

We will select R to replace/RAM write

Next, we are looking at the first number, in this case its 3, which will translate to 1 byte (for reasons we don't need to discuss)

Since we are using Hexadecimal, we are going to start with $ then replace the first number (3 in this case) with 0 followed by the section of RAM we intend to replace (202BD78)
So it will look like this $0202bd78 (caps don't matter)

Next, our byte length is going to be 1 since our first number was a 3

The next part is where it gets a bit tricky.
The value in hex for level S is FF, but that doesn't mean you can just enter FF.
You will need to get the decimal value, which in this case is 255.
So the value will be 255

Press Y to enable

Then Y to save.

Let's say you want money.
Here's the code:
Money - 8202BC00 ZZZZ

Basically, you will follow the same steps
But notice, this code starts with an 8.
An 8 will mean that this is a 2 byte code instead of 1

So the RAM address would be $0202bc00
The value would be how ever much you want to give yourself (I believe for a 2 byte code, 9999 might be the limit, not sure)

Hope that helps and makes sense. :3

yoshirulez! : Gameshark codes can be entered. The modified version you mentioned is for Action Replay codes. You can use either of those, but obviously Gameshark is the easiest way.

vanelan : Useful explanation there, specially considering that I've found more Action Replay codes than Gameshark codes. Any ideas on the games which have cheats based on simple passwords rather than codes? I'm having a lot of trouble with that.

EX Palen : I found that gamehacking.org has a good Code breakers list.
Action Repay codes on there also have the decoded versions of you click the "V" by a code.

It worked. But one question. How about codes with two lines? Like all weapons S level is 2FA14D61 F6E996D2. Do I enter it like that and replace the 2 with $? And bytes 1, right? Then 255 for S being the rank. I'll try that

vanelan : Maybe I'm drifting off-topic, but seems like some games have a cheat option included. I mean that there are passwords/codes for that game that serve to unlock various things, and the game itself offers the chance to introduce them (usually in the options sub-menu). Is there any chance this cheat option is included in the game but hidden somehow?

If I'm drifting off-topic, feel free to answer via PM or a comment on my profile.

pokeman354 : Those seem like encrypted codes.
On gamehacking.org you should be able to find both encrypted and decrypted codes.
You always want to use the decrypted codes.
They will typically start with a 3 or 8 which will translate to 1 or 2 bytes.

I have seen codes that start with 4 and 5 , well, I have to look into the byte length for those.

You might also see codes that aren't separated and look like this:
3202BD7800FF
Since it's represented by a byte and hex code, it will translate to 8 and 4 characters.
So the address will be $3202BD78 and the value will be 00FF in hex, which you will have to translate to decimal with in this case would be 255.

Multi line codes should be entered as 2 or more lines. It might be possible to enter it as one, but I have to look into it.

vanelan : Both passwords and codes, but in the latter's case are not as complicated as Action Replay or Gameshark.

I'll try to get a screenshot of the menu option I mentioned in my last post later on the day, if needed.

vanelan : I got it guys. For cheats with multiple lines you add each line as a cheat. Like if a cheat is 3202df65 d20276gf you enter it as
1). Example 3202df65
2). Example pt2 d20276gf
And then the byte length, hex no. and such.

pokeman354 : Right
Also, I haven't gotten a chance to try it, but it might be possible to make it 1 long code separated by commas or something similar.

Still, 2nd part of the code looks encrypted.
So, check the link I gave earlier for the decrypted versions.

So if you look at the pic above, you can see what I mean when I say the encrypted and decrypted codes.
