I only just really started working out today and I wanted to know if doing squats is good to exercise or if I should be doing something else instead? I'm actually pretty good at squats but haven't done them in a long time.

For today I did a lot of squats and a few sit ups.

how many squats is a good amount to do consecutively? How many total in a day maybe?

I would say that do enough to feel a burn but stop if you start to feel uncomfortable in your knees.

I personally hate squats because they put that sort of pressure on my knees. You know your own body.

What are you hoping to accomplish with your exercising? I think that might be the most important question.

I used to do a lot of squats growing up. I would do them to the point I would get a good burn but I would over do it. I would suggest you do it enough to feel a burn but don't overdo it like me lol. I wouldn't know the exact amount you should do a day just do as many as your body will let you.

EideticMemory : because I think I need exercise. I used to be really good at squats many years ago and that was before I started walking 5 mikes a day, so I have awesome legs.

If your goal is muscle gain, then yes do squats. This exercise is one of the best for (fat) weight loss since you basically use your whole body, especially the huge muscles in your legs.

Number of reps: it depends on your body type. Try either 3x6 reps or 3x12 once or twice a week, with at least a day of rest in-between. Try resting at most a minute between your sets to make the exercise more worthwhile.

Last advice: make sure you have some kind of restraint when squatting with a bar. You never know when you're going to fall and hurt your back (which happened to me a few times). Also, try using a barbell proper rather than those "assisted" one, which don't allow you a natural movement.

janus : Huh. If I actually have to do that few, then I think this will be easy. I did 80 in the day a few days ago over the course of the whole day though I'm just doing regular squats, nothing else on top of me or anything and my legs have been sore for the last two days though so it looks like it's been working since I started.

I can already jog like 5 times more than I could just a month ago.

zanderlex : Of course, your goal is then to *actually* do that many/few reps, which means heavier loads if you only do 6 - I stand around 80-85 pounds on each side when I do 3x6. If you do bodyweight squats, then you can easily do 3x25, if not more.

The soreness is normal if you're not used to that exercise. I remember once in a German class (before I started training seriously), we were singing a song about the days of the week and squatting after we named one. I couldn't walk for two days!

janus : so bodyweight squats are the ones where you just do the squats by themselves?

back as a senior in high school at the start of every weight training class we had to do 25 for the full year, those were the days.

zanderlex : yes, body weight means you are your own resistance. Now that I think about them, they might be slightly superior since bending your knees lower than 90 degrees would be easier, at least for your back.

Janis: what about more than 90 degrees? I'm very flexible so when I do it looks more like a 145, is that good or bad?

zanderlex : It depends both on your strength and flexibility. If you do body weight it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

But if you use a barbell, you have to be VERY careful to have good posture, standing and balance. Otherwise, you might fall and hurt your back. If you can, use a spotter and/or bars you can put on both sides just above your lowest squatting point to stop the bar before you hurt yourself
